RPG upgrade system

Archive: 11 posts

I'm planning to do some sort of RPG in LBP2, top down or side scrolling, I'm not sure. Anyway, seeing as the average person isn't going to want to spent too much time on a single level, any way to streamline gameplay would be useful. What I am planning is a rapid upgrade system that wouldn't require the player to stop playing for any amount of time. L1 would be used to bring up the menu which would only take up a small portion of the screen, L2 and R2 would be used to select the upgrade and R1 would be used to implement it. That way, both analog sticks and the face buttons would be free to allow for continued movement and combat. Any ideas on how to implement this would be appreciated.2010-07-06 19:16:00

First of all, what do you mean by implement? Do you mean implement the logic and things in the controlinator, or the very system into gameplay? 2010-07-06 20:23:00

Just ideas as to how I might be able to make it work, logic, how it would be displayed, how to make the system fit into the gameplay. Sorry for being so vague.2010-07-06 21:15:00

I wouldve said it very similar ^.^
I would probably use the new vacuum material as I heard its great for HUDs.
For logic, I would make it activate a toggle switch that brings up the upgrade menu. I honestly would use the directional buttons, unless they're needed elsewhere.
Asssuming youre using some sort of exp. or currency system, you would of course need a way for that exp./currency to be taken away once you have bought something.
I also would add some sort of options sub-menu that would include things like where the menu is when you pull it up (ie. The corners,Central overlay,Long bar across the screen.) That all I have for now, sorry. My brain can only produce so many thoughts an hour.
Hope this helps.

Ah, but how many people are going to spend days on their RPG and make it all into a saga?

I've been making games since I was 10 (bought a $20 program online... wasn't the best but it has a scripting system so you could do almost anything you were shooting for), and what I learned is that plenty of people say they're going to make games, but it takes dedication and a lot of work to actually make them. I'm assuming it isn't just going to be like LBP where you make a platformer and put the illusion of it being an RPG. People are going to be able to have health bars, special attacks and abilities, actual NPCs, more complex logic and effects.

As game developers we're going to have to make sure people can't accidentally get out of a level, we're going to have to make sure that it's easy to pick up and play if we want lots of people to do so, we're going to have to make sure it isn't too confusing or annoying. We're going to have to realize the difference between challenging and frustrating. If people don't like something, we're going to have to decide to change it or keep it as a vital part of the game.

Unlike in LBP where everybody is able to figure out the creation tools and make simple levels (which can honestly be some of the most fun ones!), most of the really good games in LBP2 are going to be the people who take everything into account and try their best at making them.

I think you'll be able to see the difference between the games that tons of people will spend 30 minutes on, and the ones people spend days on.

I wouldn't worry about tons of people making RPGs, Zombie Survivals, and Shooters. 'Cause unlike in LBP2 where tons of good creators go unnoticed compared to those who steal other people's work and publish it as their own, we can now be given the kinds of levels that we want instead of tons of levels we really don't care for.

Don't worry about it, I'm sure if the person creating is dedicated their RPG will stand out from the masses of people who didn't want to spend any time on it.

And I'm also sure that as soon as many find that RPGs aren't their niche they'll move on until they find it. Who knows, somebody who wanted to make an RPG may go on to make the most advanced pet system ever seen!
