How do you make stuff have a 3D like illusion?

Archive: 7 posts

How do people make some objects have a 3D look or illusion? Like on Johnee's mini mech like thing the feet and legs look 3D but you can walk around them and they are only taking up 1 layer of the screen but it's not flat either cause you can see the side of the stuff looks 3Dish too. Is there a way to glue together thin layers or is there something i'm not seeing? Can anyone help me out pls?2010-07-05 20:26:00

You mean his powered armor? If I remember right, the feet use the gekko armor plate decoration. Decorations are a great way to add depth to an object.2010-07-06 01:49:00

There is another way! If the deco you want does not exist in the shape you want you can use the Theck glitch layers to create custom shapes that will act as thin in a thick layer. You will have to use the other complementing one however in the thick layer so they don't clash.

This is a great way to get added detail and you can make in any shape or material, so is more flexible than decos.

One glitch layer is the checkpoint thickness '2D' (grabbable) the other is prize bubble thickness sits infront of the 1st glitch layer.

The ways to add depth to things are:- (In order of my most favourite)

The extra layers, check point and golf ball (theck and thack).

Gradient stickers, even stickers youve made your self with slight colour variations giving the illusion of depth.

Lighting? placing a high radius low level LED to light up layers differently and casting shadows really makes things pop out more.

Decorations and unique objects? they add a lot of depth, like you may have seen people use a dolls head for tress? Things like that really make the level feel a lot more smooth and rounded.

The 3D glitch, adding scenery in the back ground really does open a whole new level of depth. To many people use it badly though, why I don't really like it that much.

Fixed camera angles and cleverly shaped objects making an optical illusion.

For added 3d using TheAdipose 's 3d layer tool is a great way to put your pre-made objects in the background/foreground inc lights and pistons.

Just so you know using Theck and Thack can be a little tricky. The best way I found is to put theck to one side of thack, use the corner editor THEN slide them together.

You CAN'T use corner editor while they overlap or slide one over the other while grid is on. And I do not advise drawing one on top of the other.

Using the 2d grabbable (Theck Sponge) works... but NOT if there is a Thick or Thin layer behind it UNLESS you are already dragging it! meaning if you let go while passing another object you cant pick it up again.

Oh and yes gradient stickers are great!

Custom stickers and fixed cameras can do amazing things. For example, I was playing a level by Kiminski: "Lara Cloth: Tomb Raider-Helgardh" (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21790-Lara-Cloth-Tomb-Raider-Helgardh&highlight=helgardh) and I encountered a statue that made me stop because I didn't remember ever seeing that particular 3d object in the game. I had to unsticker it before I'd believe that it was actually a cutout with a sticker (actually, it was several stickers). I was actually stopping and unstickering all over that level: the snowy mountains at the beginning will trick you too.

She used a ps2 eyetoy. I had never had any interest in using a camera to import pics into lbp before that, but after playing that and finding out how cheap the old eyetoys are now I went out and got one.

I believe she's also the first to use the doll head for trees, or at least the first to do so in a high profile level.
