Inspiration and Ideas

Archive: 5 posts

I've been playing through most of the amazing community levels out there lately just to see what makes them so fun.

Levels like:
ZEN by Jeffcu28
Here and There by amazingflyingpoo
Flat Down Journey by spark151
Tera Cota by VelcroJonze
Rust Bucket by sha-ja
Euphoric Physics by FULLGORR
And Pt. 1 of the Blue Behemoth by BlueBulletBill

These levels are most of the levels that really inspire me and make me want to keep creating great things on LBP PSP.

I've realized that most of what makes them so enjoyable are:
The Visuals
The different styles and types of gameplay in each level
Each different style of CREATING that each creator has.
Ex: with amazingflyingpoo, he kind of creates RPG styled games where you kind of have to do things in a certain order and there is always a great story to it and a new type of gameplay mechanic in each new level
And how well the music goes along with the level.

I've also realized that from reading other posts that it is important to make the levels that are created, difficult but never too frustrating. I haven't played many terrible levels on the PSP, but the ones that have been the most frustrating for me are the ones that I fail to pass a certain point numerous times. That just really seems to tick me and other people off.

Well, anyways I just felt like letting people know what I feel makes a level fun, so that hopefully people will be able to create somewhat better levels with this information in mind.

I will continue to play levels from the community to be inspired and find new ways of making levels fun.

Thanks for the post eagerneph! You bring up a great point about how levels can be hard, but they need to not be frustrating.

It is great to have people test a level for you to make sure that it is never frustrating! There is a HUGE difference between a frustrating level and a challenging level, and it can be easy to accidentally cross the line from one to the other. A level tester who honestly gives their opinion should be able to help you quickly figure out if your level is in fact frustrating instead of challenging.

Thanks for the awesome post eagerneph!

No problem! I've been looking for some great testers to test my (still under construction) Color of Music level. I've made alot of edits, revisions, and whatnot.
