Journey (by thatgamecompany)

Archive: 18 posts

One of the lesser known games from E3, Journey's sounding to be an amazing little title.

The pioneers that brought you the award-winning PlayStation Network titles flOw & Flower are back with another title that challenges traditional gaming conventions. With Journey, thatgamecompany (TGC) continues its tradition of delivering simple gameplay and accessible controls in a rich interactive environment that invites players to explore and experience emotional chords that are still uncommon in videogames.

An exotic adventure with a more serious tone, Journey presents a unique vision of an online adventure experience. Awakening in an unknown world, the player walks, glides, and flies through a vast and awe-inspiring landscape, while discovering the history of an ancient, mysterious civilization along the way. Journey's innovative approach to online play encourages players to explore this environment with strangers who cross their path from time to time. By traveling together, they can re-shape the experience -- creating authentic moments they will remember and discuss with others.

INTUITIVE CONTROLS AND EXPERIENCE –Players with differing skill levels and/or moods can experience the game at their own pace.

LUSH AND EXPANSIVE ENVIRONMENTS – Grand landscapes filled with dynamic sand and cloth. Fully simulated sand dunes ripple and slide as players move across them.

FRESH ONLINE ADVENTURE – Players explore a mysterious world, discovering its hidden history. People are free to travel alone, or adventure with strangers that they meet along the way.

I am in love with the way they are making this game. The fact that you're almost always online, with other players is awesome, and the mystery of the games story is intriguing. Theres supposed to be a LOT of things that will make the game really replayable. This company also made flOw and Flower, and we all know those were really amazing games.

New gameplay!:

I'm really looking forward to this too, thatgamecompany make fantastic stuff. I think it would be really cool if the players you met online remain nameless and the only form of communication is in-game gestures.2010-07-03 18:27:00

Wow! I haven't even heard of this before!
I'm a big fan of all of TGC's games, so I'm looking forward to this a lot!

It's nice to see that at least some developers (TGC, Mm etc) have a tiny bit of creativity to make their games at least a little bit original... *glares at COD*

I'm a little confused though, is this an online game?

@plasmavore From what I've read, it's supposed to be online if you are connected to the internet while you are playing. If you aren't, it'll just be you.

@Killian I read something about gestures and dancing, so that may be true. Also, unless they have some way to tell who's your friend, I think names would be best.

So if you're the type of person who loves to refresh pages then: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1179541p1.html is for you.

If you're quick you can grab a beta code. Though, they appear to not work in many places, so there's a good chance you won't be able to get them even if you are the fastest.

Did you buy any of their games before? If you haven't I may give that a shot. I really want to get into the beta but I don't have any of their games.

Really want into this beta I never got round to buying flower (still hoping it appears on PS+), but I bought Fl0w when I got my PS3. This game is one of the most interesting and unique to come out this year.2011-06-29 11:53:00

Certainly looks different... & that's what I look for in a game.

Apparently there's no "freinds" or lobbies is in this game... you just randomly meet up with another online player - and you can choose wether to journey with them, or wether you just go off on your own.

Sounds intriguing.

I won a giveaway and was given a beta code. From what I've seen from the beta (it's a bit short but that's understandable as to not give away too much of the game's storyline) it's a very calm, relaxing piece of artwork. The landscape is fantastic and the storyline is most definitely intriguing as you sort of make out what these hieroglyphics mean that play across the screen at certain parts of the beta. Besides telling you how to move and look around, everything else you pretty much have to figure out for yourself. It's a puzzling platformer and a great one too. Sadly, I haven't come across anyone else in my Journey so far and might go back and play it again to see if I can. It's a great game and you guys should check it out when it releases!2011-07-02 21:07:00

I'm looking more and more forward to this game each time some little news is released on it. I just wonder how far the co-op will go. It should be fun, but will we be able to stick with the same person all the way through if we wanted to or will be forcibly separated at some point?2011-07-02 22:47:00

They stick with you during the cutscenes in the beta which is pretty neat. There are three sections of gameplay, each separated with a cutscene before a quick fade to black for your character to advance onto the next section of the game. It's happened before where I seemed to have joined a game in progress after completing the first section and eventually found someone on the far end of the desert, signaling me to come over. I'm not sure if each section will have you automatically join a game in progress or start a new one. It's a bit more organised into a stumbling across a stranger and deciding whether to stick together and work out the puzzles together, or to continue on without him. Besides, how would you even know if it was the same person all along? They all look the same to me, besides the varying lengths of the scarf which just indicate how far the player's progressed.

There's always someone who isn't as skilled, then there are those who would just let someone else get through a section for them. It would be nice to stick with someone you know is capable of holding there own, even if you won't know what their psn is.2011-07-03 04:45:00
