Garry's Mod Contraptions!

To start from the top, Garry's mod is a half-life 2 sandbox mod, that grew and grew from a few basic weld and rope tools into a massive community with it's own independent modding community full of new tools, props, npcs, weapons, lua scripts, game-modes being generated all the time.

Wiremod was a significant addition as it let players create automated processes within the game, basically exactly the same as what LBP2 is offering now; connecting logic gates to in-game pistons and motors to create automated systems

I've put a couple of years into Garry's mod but I stopped playing it around the time I got LBP, mainly because LBP is a lot more stable than Gmod ever was. I did make some amazingly complicated stuff in my time.

(What is awesome, is I won the money to buy LBP from a competition on Wegame.com using a Gmod Video, how wicked is that? The competition was best kill in a video game, and this is what I did (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqinERn4uSc))

Anyways, basically i'm asking people to post stuff they've made, or at least describe what they've done.

I'd be willing to get back into Gmod if there were people around to play it

Heres what i've made:

Airship Cecilia
It stays in the air by counter rotating fins and a little thruster based counter drift logic. NOT hoverballs.

Airship Rheinlander
This stays in the air at the height I want by GPS based wire weight system that increases weight when it's too high and decreases when it's too low. NOT hoverballs. Also uses a fin propeller for thrust

Dual Loaded Artillery
You can see the wire chips that went into this one, I had them all colour coded for which barrel they loaded and ignited.

Mechanical Auto-Cannon

Teleporting Space Tractor
Not that difficult to make, but very satisfying none-the-less!

I love GMOD, but I don't have the patience to actually make anything other than a hover-ball covered piece of plastic propelled by thrusters.2010-07-02 03:05:00

This is true.

It's a lot easier to stop what you're making and come back to it another day on LBP. GMOD has a tendancy to never save things properly (even with the adv dupe mod)

Hey, would you mind giving me some info about GMOD? I've heard of it but I don't actually know like exactly what it is. What platform is it on?2010-07-05 01:25:00

GMOD is on the pc only, I don't think you can get it for Mac. You do not need to own anything else to play it- BUT, if you do own half life 2, episode 1/2, portals, team fortress 2, day of defeat source, dark messiah might and magic or counter strike source, then all the models, props and characters will carry over and will allow you to play around with them.

HOWEVER, don't let the fact that you don't own any of those worry you because there are loads of awesome construction model packs to download, full of useful bits of kit to build basically anything from. Basically like a big lego kit.

For it to run at all, you'll need a computer than can run half-life 2.

For it to run well after you've built something ridiculously complicated you'd need something that can run episode 2 or portals smoothly.

It currently costs ?4.01 on the steam store, a total bargain!

People use Garrys mod for making machinima, creating contraptions for the hell of it (s'what I used to do), enter competitions, play different custom game modes (more on that in a minute) and messing around with friends.
Me and my bro would forever make tanks and blow each other apart, it's very good fun.

Anyway, not too long ago a bit of kit called Fretta was released, and fretta is a toolset that allows people to easily make their own game modes, so many very strange, weird and wonderful ones popped up.

My favourite one is called water world where up to 4 teams of players have to cobble together a boat from random bits of scrap that they can spawn in for ???. They win ??? by defeating opponents in battles on said boats.
There are team games competitions ones where a team of prisoner players try and outwit a team of guard players, there are zombie game-modes where players fight a single player who is a zombie, but when the zombie defeats a player, they join the ranks of the undead until one survivor is the winner.

These are but a few.

But if you don't feel like doing that, you can just build stuff, or download a few of the thousands of mods. All you have to do is youtube Garrys mod or "Gmod" and you'll find the sorts of stuff that people do with it...

Alright man! Thanks for the info! Right now I'm pretty much a PC gamer since I don't have the money to get myself a PS3 yet. So for the PC I own Modern Warfare 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, and Portal. So you don't have to have any other games to run Garrys Mod?2010-07-05 02:08:00

Nopers, and if you can run MW2 at all well then it'll dominate GMOD.2010-07-05 02:19:00

I seen some funny GMOD videos from machinima XD They have one called 100 ways to die in GMOD and that was crazy! My computer is horrible, so I can't buy it 2010-07-05 02:52:00

That's what I thought when I bought TF2, and my awful 2003-spec'd computer actually managed to run it. Try Can You Run It? (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri) just to be sure.

Of course, seeing as how TF2 got crippled by updates, it couldn't run it now, but GMod should be just fine.

The best Gmod machinima in my opinion is the Gmod Idiot box series, theres like 9 episodes and it's super self referential and quotes lots of pop culture tv stuff and memes. It's good fun.2010-07-05 11:15:00
