Aperture Laboratories: Part One
Archive: 125 posts
Hey guys. It's not much of a secret that I've been working on this level, but I've finally finished it. I've been putting in 10-15 hour days for the past week to get this done (yay being off from work). For those of you who aren't aware, this is a reboot of one of my very first levels in LittleBigPlanet. I did this partially because I wanted to see it done better and partially to witness how I've grown as a creator. A little backstory on the level. I'm a huge Portal fan. Ever since I got LBP back at the end of 2009, I wanted to make something portal-inspired. My first attempts were atrocious. Eventually my skills were to the point where I could make the Aperture Science level series published last summer. Fast forward several months. I had become more experience with creating, so thought I'd take a crack at remaking the series. My motivation sputtered out, and it was left abandoned on my moon. Then, about a week back, I picked the level up again. I didn't have anything else I was working on, so I thought I'd wrap this one up. I've spent many, many hours tweaking everything to my standard of perfection, so I hope it was well worth it. So, without further ado, I hope you all enjoy. It's a puzzler at heart, but none of it is very difficult. There are six secret areas in the level... if you find all six you will be given a sticker which unlocks a hidden race mode. If/when you get this sticker, just stick it to the camera at the start of the level. Viola - you have 12 minutes... GO! Pictures for you visually inclined (thanks jww) http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/6623/aperture1.png I peed. http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4792/aperture2.png "The Enrichment Center apologizes for this clearly broken testchamber..." http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/6788/aperture3.png Secrets! http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/7373/aperture4.png Oh noes! http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/8780/aperture5.png TestChamber 4 - this is the make or break point for many. http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/3981/aperture6.png Jww, lemme out! http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/2001/aperture7.png Ooh, another secrets! http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/9829/aperture8.png "Please do not tamper with vital testing apparatus." http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/5330/aperture9.png What now? http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/5152/aperture10.png Ohhhh... http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/3041/aperture11.png The cake is a lie. http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/4002/aperture12.png Hang on, jww, lemme check LBPC http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/4364/aperture13.png Splat, splat... http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/549/aperture14.png ...splat, splat, splat. http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/8803/aperture15.png Aperture Science High Energy Pellet Catcher http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/1787/aperture16.png This test is impossible. HIGH SCORE BABY! Lol, sorry, just had to do that. I'm running on just under 10000 points at the moment - how cool am I?! Comph - you've done it again. I cannot say anything that I haven't said before during testing (Mind the pun!) - I think you solved every problem there was! And it is the best level of yours so far (no offence to your others) - so nice work. Very enjoyable, and outstanding work on the whole thing. Well done! :star::star::star::star::star:<3 P.s. Oh and Comph? Remember that thing you said about not finding all the secrets... http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt100/standby250/APhoto_19.jpg | 2010-07-02 02:53:00 Author: standby250 Posts: 1113 |

Nicely played, Standby. I will tell you, though... there is more than one way to get to secret #1. That's my Easter Egg for the level. Well, actually there are a few more, but they all entail you failing in some way or another. In the room where you have to dispense the cube onto the unstationary scaffold. If you fall on the electricity, GlaDOS will scold you for not listening. In the room where you are timed and have to shoot the paint switch on the top-middle of the room... get yourself stuck in there... In the companion cube puzzle (Room 9), try pushing the cube into the elecricity. You've rendered yourself stuck... or have you??? Lastly, you can bypass a medium section of Room 9 and a most of Room 10 if you are enough of a ninja... will be helpful for anyone using the race to go for a high score. I had another secret planned, but at the moment I cannot place anything more into the level. I was *this close* to pulling my hair out getting everything into the level. She just can't take any more! | 2010-07-02 02:59:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

Great level, ive always been a fan of your work and it was an honor to glitch through your level all in the name of science right? aahhh progress XD lol ANYWAY this is by far your best yet, i love portal and i love lbp, its hard to overstate my satisfaction with this level. Nearly had a heart attack watching the level patch take its time loading O_O but once i got in i new i was in for a good time, the scenery is great, accurate, but with a nice purple twist the dialogue couldn't be better and the puzzles never sees to amaze me, you either have to be insane or a genius (or both) to thing of some of those. im not gonna ramble on XD but i think its given :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: and a well deserved heart can't wait to escape in part 2 | 2010-07-02 03:52:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
Hey! I'm just playing race mode, and was wondering if during race mode, it would be better to stop all speech bubbles, and when you're waiting near the first turret, not to have the door closed - rather so you don't have to wait for it to open. Would make race mode more enjoyable! | 2010-07-02 03:55:00 Author: standby250 Posts: 1113 |
This IS a good idea. It would require me to use a few more materials, which I'm not sure I'll be able to pull off. I'll give it the old college try tomorrow. | 2010-07-02 04:14:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
What can I say? Flat out brilliant. We may need to wrap duct tape around your head to keep your brain from getting too big. I think that ending part is the greatest puzzle I've seen in LBP. One minor quibble - sometimes it's hard in the final stretch to tell what has glass in front of it and what doesn't. Maybe red glass or something? Not sure. There was a couple times my first time through that this threw me. But, that is very minor. This level is about as close to perfect as anything I've seen. | 2010-07-02 04:26:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
OMG! I love portal!!! I am going to play this as soon as I can! | 2010-07-02 04:34:00 Author: SackRacer77 Posts: 153 |
Aw, CCubb, you are making be blush. I had those same concerns about the glass... I will see if I can't change that up a little to add some clarity. | 2010-07-02 04:35:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
This IS a good idea. Why, thank you very much... | 2010-07-02 04:52:00 Author: standby250 Posts: 1113 |
Fantastic, I gotta play this ! :hero: I never thought this series needed a remake, but this looks even neater. | 2010-07-02 10:34:00 Author: Oddmania Posts: 1305 |

Smart, precise, neat, subtle, humorous...! I'm not really into puzzle levels, but how not appreciate the numerous qualities of this one! I really spend a good time playing it! And I found 4 secrets!! I'm so proud of myself (usually I don't find anything...) Excellent work Comph! :star::star::star::star::star: | 2010-07-02 14:10:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |
... and you call this a portal lvl? I mean, err... there are no portals. How could you let that slip?? As I have previously said, this both looks and plays perfectly. It is the kind of level that instead of requiring you to have quick fingers (which this one does also require on some bits, though) requires quick thinking. I still remember the first time I played that part where you share moving platform with a cube, on which you have to jump on to pass the test. Since im pretty dumb when it comes to this things, my reaction was... grabbing the cube. Somehow, I felt safer that way. Lol. Needless to say, I was gassed to death. What Im tyrying to say, its that if that had been instead a pltaforming section chances are I wouldnt have died; I would have pulled out some of my madz skillz and beat that part. But this was not the case; I had to think before moving, not the other way around, which is what I normally do. Here is the real "beauty" if this level; it puts to work the breaon instead of the fingers. Sure, many other puzzlers do that, indeed. But little lvls have I seen that while trying to quickly think your way out of the purplest situations, do also threaten you with... well, incineration. I know that that was no real feedback -actually nearly none of my posts in this forum section are-, it was more like saying how awesome this lvl was. But c'mon, I'm sure that from time to time we all prefer some compliments that make us feel fuzzy inside rather than some feedback telling us that this and that could have been done better. Needless to say... 0 stars and no hearts, because this feedback is coming from the latest version of it that I played on your moon, lol. Though hey, I promise to rate it properly n' all. EDIT: Gah, censored comment on the lvl. NVM, it simply was the funniest joke ever related to Mrsc comment | 2010-07-02 14:29:00 Author: Keldur Posts: 628 |
Oh for gods sake! How do you do it? I can't make a **** thing! I make the start of a level or make it all platforming with awful aesthetics. I just can't do it! My latest start is pretty decent actually... at the moment. Anyway, I will try it out right now and gives teh feedbacks. | 2010-07-02 14:50:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3 I gave it that many hearts. I have no idea how much logic must be in that masterpiece! The only problem was that it is hard to distinguish which bits are glass at the end. I only found 3 secrets. D: | 2010-07-02 15:28:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |
Thanks guys. The big complaint I got was about the glass at the end. I went in and made it darker... hopefully more distinguishable, but I may have failed yet. I toyed with changing the glass type, but it doesn't look as clean. I'm torn! I appreciate the kind words. And, you'd be surprised... there isn't a ton of heavy logic in there. The dialogue is done in my own special way (with an emitter sequencer), and the elevator near the end uses some nifty logic, but it's mostly just: Get cube on button --> door opens. The trick was making you think it was complex. | 2010-07-02 15:45:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Oh, you misunderstood. I meant brain logic. Very clever stuff. | 2010-07-02 16:08:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |
The dialogue is done in my own special way (with an emitter sequencer) Sounds interesting, how does that work then? I'll try and get around to playing this tonight, but if not it'll be Sunday | 2010-07-02 16:16:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Still stunning ! The design is excellent. I'm not keen on futuristic levels, I often find them impersonnal, and cold, with areas with nobody around. Not warm enough. Well, I can't say the place your level takes place in is different, but there's a little something that makes the player comfortable. I've also noticed you made your own red buttons. It's a tiny detail, but I was pleased with them. And the puzzles are cleverer than ever, I really enjoyed it ! PS : I tried to post this message many times, it seems there was some sort of bug... I rebooted my comp. | 2010-07-02 16:24:00 Author: Oddmania Posts: 1305 |
<3 what you've done with this man, 'specially the grey tiled walls and the little illuminated windows all over the place. Hsven't played it fully online yet but it's only a matter of time! | 2010-07-02 16:27:00 Author: Holguin86 Posts: 875 |
Sounds interesting, how does that work then? It shouldn't be too unfamiliar to you... it's almost the same as the design for dialogue we came up with a while back. Basically emitting keys in a sequence. I have intertwined it in with other logic bits to further confuse myself and optimize the level. I should also note that I'm using your Brain Scoring system for rewarding the discovery of secret areas. I haven't been noticing the same problems you've gotten where it fails to stop emitting. The only thing I'm concerned about is the potential for a score hack of someone joining late after having found a secret. I would dissolve away the emitter, but frankly I can't fit any more material into the level. :/ | 2010-07-02 16:35:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Hi- I played and I enjoyed it a lot. I've never actually played Portal but now that I have played this I really want to. Everything went by smoothly except one thing, I managed to shoot one of the switches and I broke it, which made the cube emitter-thing emit over and over again, which made me have to restart the level. Other than that, I enjoyed, by the way, I managed to find four secrets, but I think I'll go back and try to find them all later. Great job! I rated the level :star::star::star::star::star:. | 2010-07-02 16:45:00 Author: X-FROGBOY-X Posts: 1800 |
Everything went by smoothly except one thing, I managed to shoot one of the switches and I broke it, which made the cube emitter-thing emit over and over again, which made me have to restart the level. Yikes. I think I have a solution. It's not perfect... but it will be better. Make the emitter set to emit only after a huge chunk of time. If the switch is gone, you should have enough time to completel the puzzle before a new cube is emitted. Anyone got a better idea? Edit: it now emits every 300 seconds... or 5 minutes. | 2010-07-02 16:50:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

You could use a custom-made switch, which could be stronger. Either way, this is a great level, and, although I stink at jumping in LBP, me and (mostly, lol) Tanrockstan got highscore for 2 players last night. Score was 10,500ish I think. No complaints since it's better than anything I could make. | 2010-07-02 16:58:00 Author: Fishrock123 Posts: 1578 |
It IS a custom made switch... (He's talking about the ones that emit cubes... they are made out of dissolve, a creature leg, and the siren decoration from the Incredibles Pack) | 2010-07-02 16:59:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

And that is only after the switch has been destroyed, correct? :/ Didn't want to make a new post: that is correct. The input is one-shot, so it will emit each time you hit the switch. In the event that the switch breaks, though, it will emit every 5 minutes (you need to hit the switch in order to get the gun, so this should not force you have to wait around for 5 minutes, it will just prevent a new one from emitting). -Comph Oh, and I played the level. It was brilliant, fun, challenging, and full of original Aperture goodness! :star::star::star::star::star: and <3 Short but sweet review. No problems whatsoever :] EDIT: Didn't know how to thank you! Wow that was seriously well made. Everything was very solid and perfectly positioned. I loved the purple theme and the interesting if not too challenging puzzles. However, I did find the speech timing a little quick and don't think a lot of children will be able to read it in time. Still this must be one of, if not, my all time favourite levels. I was walking around that last level like a complete idiot, going "Whut? this lefel is brokededed..." then I figured it out and I was like "OMG I AM TEH GENIOUSITY!" Levels are awesome when they make you feel smart upon completion. I gave :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 Waiting for the next two remakes!!! | 2010-07-03 05:13:00 Author: Sage Posts: 2068 |
I have a complaint about the speech. In regards to the original, you changed "incinerated" to "euthanized". No, really, I do have a complaint about the speech. "I can see the cake now, all warm and gooey" seems very... unproffesional to me, and kills the mood a little bit. I don't have much else to say other than what's already been said. The puzzles are mind-blowingly brilliant. I agree with CCubbage that we should duct tape your head so your brain stops growing... but I don't think there's enough duct tape in the world. :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3. Definitely my favorite level of yours, and maybe my favorite level of LBP | 2010-07-03 07:57:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
No, really, I do have a complaint about the speech. "I can see the cake now, all warm and gooey" seems very... unproffesional to me, and kills the mood a little bit. Aw, you no likey? It was actually my own writing, but I honestly feel like it captures the mood of Portal. The antagonist GlaDOS says a few things that are similarly lighthearted: "Well done. Remember, the Aperture Science 'Bring your daughter to work' day is the perfect time to have her tested." "Unbelievable! You, {SUBJECT NAME HERE}, must be the pride of {SUBJECT HOMETOWN HERE}" "Did you know you can donate one or all of your vital organs to the Aperture Science Self Esteem Fund for Girls? It's true!" "You did it! The weighted companion cube certainly brought you good luck. However, it cannot accompany you for the rest of the test and must, unfortunately, be euthanized. Please escort your companion cube to the Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator." (Just to show you where I got the word choice) [...] "I'm not kidding now. Turn back or I will kill you." "I'm going to kill you, and all the cake is gone." "This is your fault. It didn't have to be like this." "You're not a good person, you know that, right? Good people don't end up here." "What did I ever do to you?" [...] /Portal Edit: Oh, and also forgot, Cin... if you wait long enough before incinerating the cube, it will show extra dialogue which says "The testing cannot continue until you incinerate your faithful companion cube" | 2010-07-03 12:32:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I really enjoyed the level. From the aesthetics to the puzzles to GLaDOS, you nailed the feel of Aperture Science and Portal perfectly (The fact that you got GLaDOS' dialogue perfectly is a bit worrying, though). I can't wait until the next parts, and am also excited to see what you do with LBP2 with the ability to be over-the-shoulder. :star::star::star::star::star:+<3=My rating (I'm just as surprised as you that stars and hearts in my post are my rating). | 2010-07-03 13:10:00 Author: Unknown User |

Based on the pictures it seems a little dark. But what do I know, I haven't played it yet... So I will now! | 2010-07-03 15:01:00 Author: Marauder47 Posts: 26 |
So for the heckuvit, I played your original build and this back to back... TBH, the difference in play, innovation, and rating is negligible. What is apparent is how far you've come in a little over a year at defining the 'Comphermc'-style to perfection; presentation is slightly improved here as well. It's great you can see all the budding beginings in the first-- and those few areas where the corner editor simply overlooked. Slick beast comph, you've come a long way... So what is the next step of the evolution? | 2010-07-03 21:13:00 Author: Gravel Posts: 1308 |
Ok I went into this thinking "how in the world is this going to work without portals?" But now I know. Even without them this is very accurate to the original game, it was nice how you were able to make the story reflect the original, are you planing on making a sequel? Anyway it had some very well thought out gameplay and puzzles. 5 stars and heart! One glitch, and I wasn't able to do it a second time, in one of the chambers where there is a secret area next to a lift for a storage cube, right after that I was able to jump across the deadly stuff without the cube, but I couldn't do it a second time. | 2010-07-03 22:01:00 Author: SackRacer77 Posts: 153 |
This is a bit random, but, why are your three remakes so different in style? The first one is mostly grey and white, I predict the second one will have a lot of metal, and the last one, so far, has a lot of purple? | 2010-07-04 00:35:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
This is a bit random, but, why are your three remakes so different in style? The first one is mostly grey and white, I predict the second one will have a lot of metal, and the last one, so far, has a lot of purple? It's an evolution of style. Nobody wants to play a level that is primarily white. Also, nobody wants to play direct copies of the same level. Thus, when I decided to make a remake, I needed to make sure that both in terms of visuals and gameplay that it was unique enough to stand on its own. I presume, as well, that you are referring to the unfinished Part 3 that I showed you several months back? That is likely going to ALL change. Even looking at it now, it's very rough. I will maintain the layout for the final room (and also the big rusty room with the details in the background), but everything leading up to it will be scrapped and remade. It was too futuristic looking and too simple. Frankly, I haven't touched that since maybe February. Also, thanks for all the support guys. The level is doing really well. Side note: my next little mini-project is to create a series of fonts to be given away in a showcase level. I'm sick of people using the same 2-3 fonts for everything, especially when they don't match the theme. Thus, I'm choosing fonts that are a bit more versatile, simple, and visible. If you have any particular fonts that you feel fit the bill, shoot me a visitor message. I've made nearly 6 of them thus far, and I will make a few more before giving them out. Grid-like fonts are preferred! Fonts made: Aperture Science Font (finished the rest of it) Interstellar Font (based on Spaceman (http://www.dafont.com/spaceman.font)) Neuropol (http://www.dafont.com/neuropol.font), modified slightly Perfect Dark, lowercase (http://www.dafont.com/perfect-dark-zero.font) Robofan, lowercase (http://www.dafont.com/robofan-free.font) A simple, blocky font (unnamed) Want to make: Zepherean (http://www.dafont.com/zephyrean-brk.font), Omnes (http://typedia.com/explore/typeface/omnes/) (LBP's interface font) | 2010-07-04 01:16:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
You definitely need that duct tape to keep your "big----------- brain" contained! ( Hehe you know what the middle is, now wouldn't that sound odd if I said)! I have played at least played more than ten times and I just need the three player highscore. Good luck beating me! I am going to just make a pro/con list and will write some feedback right after I play. --Pros-- The new style has a great new feel to it, and it incorporates new and old! The new puzzles were more difficult and the old ones that made their return were smoother and overall everything looked constructed better. The homemade switches were absolutely perfect! Race mode was a good incentive to replay a fabulous level. (Obviously it worked on me and I am still going to play again, and again..... And again)! Instead of just secrets, your brain had to think of Easter eggs too... Meh, what an brilliant idea. I have heard much about Portal but have never played myself, this stayed true to the story from my knowledge and even wanted to make me buy. I also played Still Alive during one play! Your use of thin gas... It kept us pesky thecXmen out (Kernel!!!) Your perfectionism! The whole level looked complete and in tip-top shape! You showed me the ropes. --Cons-- You used up too much thermo preventing you from adding any more! The buttons sides were grabable and in race mode it was hard to grab storage/companion cubes. The level is too easy with all the tricks... The checkpoints seemed scarce, especially when playing multiplayer this gets pesky. Test six's turret right after the door shoots occasionally when you are below it and this can cause more multiplayer issues. I will still try to write something more in-depth but your brain better think of something good for part two and three! Good work Comphy! A few last words... Err lyrics! I feel fantastic and I'm still alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI). While you're dying I'll be still alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI). And when you're dead I will be still alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI). | 2010-07-04 03:33:00 Author: tanrockstan34 Posts: 1076 |
Great work once again. I played the level very briefly yesterday, without searching for the secret chambers, just to see how the leve was going to finish, and go through the brilliant dialogues. Wonderful work. 5 stars are obvious. | 2010-07-04 05:46:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
Great level! Even better than the original! (But that was why you made this! ) I was too amazed with the level to find any cons, so that probably means there wasn't any. :star::star::star::star::star:! EDIT: I remember one con. I didn't like it when the little secret areas still showed around you when you found them, even in the test chamber. Maybe get a motion sensor set to the secret room to have the piston or whatever had it down to stay down inside. | 2010-07-04 17:00:00 Author: Phosphorus15 Posts: 463 |

Great level! I remember right after I beat Portal I felt inspired, and it's really obvious that the inspiration never really died for you (my inspiration span is almost as low as my usual attention span) I was expecting to be able to take down all of the GLaDOS parts watching me from the ceiling, but I couldn't. Other than that I wasn't really disappointed. I'm going to have to log on and heart it since I was playing with somebody else. I was also shocked that GLaDOS was recreated in the same psychotic and obsessive manner that I remember. Although some of the dialogue was different. Although I know it's probably been done many times before, I liked the way you made the platform-moving parts of the level and the handmade switches, I've always wanted to do that but worried it would look goofy. I guess it can be pulled off after-all. Again, really great level. | 2010-07-04 17:49:00 Author: Martut Posts: 46 |

Really nice level, in fact its one of my favourites from you and i think it's the best and the most fun you have made. The visuals are exceptional and the gameplay it's awesome. Good job! | 2010-07-05 01:17:00 Author: ferrrch Posts: 429 |
I finally played it, and I liked it a lot, I even hearted it. But... I still like the first ones, this seemed a little too dark and there was just something missing about it. I didn't even have to do anything in the end, the platform just fell down and bam, to be continued. What kind of an escape is that? Don't get me wrong, I liked it... I liked it a lot. But I liked the original ones better. I'll be waiting for the next part, maybe that one will convince me otherwise about the remakes. | 2010-07-05 01:33:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
awesome another level by comphermc I cant wait to play it | 2010-07-05 01:40:00 Author: Arnald23 Posts: 1843 |
What kind of an escape is that? The escape will happen in Part 2... The same story as the originals, if you remember correctly. As for the darkness... maybe it was a bit dark, but the darkness is what made the lighting so powerful. Any brighter and would've just looked washed out. Sorry you weren't feeling it. It may have been a problem if you truly couldn't see stuff in the level, but I predict that is not the case. I'm gonna chalk it up to personal preference. | 2010-07-05 04:25:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I'll try this out the next time I get on LBP. It looks awesome and I'm sure it will be after playing Interstellar Infiltration and Cloudy with a chance of Teamwork. | 2010-07-05 05:15:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |
Played it with you just before release and had no problems then (I lie we did, but you fixed 'em!). Played it again last night and loved it. Looks great and plays well and some of the sections are exceptionally well laid out and very clever in the way they are designed. Missed one secret but I know where it is, it caught my eye as I passed it. So I'll be back to see what that sticker does, but i think I have an idea seeing the top scores Awesome work again mate, can't wait for part to. Im no fan of creating levels based on other games, but your excecution was done very nice, if the aperture science voice was there talking to your sackboy you would almost think that she has taken over lbp. The secret rooms where done nicely and gave a very good contrast with the sterile surroundings in the rest of the level. The use of all the layers and gameplay you added made it quite fun working my way through the laboratory. None of the sections where really hard, but looking at your prev. level most things might look easy all of a sudden. My only pointer is.. I think it was section 9, you had to climb, pull a switch and a timer goes off, the switch is top left of the room but the camera is zoomed out so far it spawns any died sackmembers and making it impossible to proceed unless nobody died.. so a simple camera change should change that. 5 stars for this level, but it missed something that I cannot put my finger on.. so sorry but no heart. If i can put my finger on, I am sure to let you know! | 2010-07-05 12:16:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
Mr. Compher, you are amazing! I think All Mine is probably the best level ever made, and Roller Inc. and this new one are every bit as good! I'll have to figure out how to "ninja" my way through the last two areas like you talked about to get that high score, I'm about 1,500 points away with no shortcuts now. I was going to ask about the scoring system, but that has been answered (I thought you somehow used score bubbles, but it's brains I guess) so I'd love to know how you make the layer sensative sensors! Any plans for a tutorial? Anyway, thanks for another great level, and for all you do for the LBP Community- it's not DLC, but guys like you that keep this game interesting! Oh, and I apologize for single-handedly ruining your plays/heart ratio buy playing your levels so much! | 2010-07-05 20:41:00 Author: JakePutz Posts: 92 |
I stumbled over this on the Cool Pages in LBP (great to notice a cool level there for once.. plus, a Comphermc level!). I played it with my friend - and I needed him at the last one! It was hard, but it was great. I love a bit of challenge. It was just a pure awesome level. I have never finished Portal, but I think I might do soon now. It was just a really impressive and fabouless level. I didn't notice one bug. Everything seemed perfect.. well done. 5 stars and a heart from me keep it up!! - I wonder what you can end up making in LBP2.. hmm | 2010-07-05 21:31:00 Author: Mugsig Posts: 85 |
Great level, comphermc. I just played and completed it and I love all the tests. I can't wait for part 2 | 2010-07-05 21:56:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |
Two more things I noticed: On your way out from the aperture science emergency escape hatch secret, the camera zone makes it hard to see out of the tunnel. In the one-way elevator, if people spawn from the checkpoint below it while other people are in the elevator, the elevator's doors open early. | 2010-07-06 00:33:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
I'll have to figure out how to "ninja" my way through the last two areas like you talked about to get that high score, I'm about 1,500 points away with no shortcuts now. Haha, so someone finally beat my highscore. Bout' time as I even took time for a few shortcuts. Good job... I finally have a challenge (besides Comphy himself) to beat! I thought of something else that was well designed. The paintinator switches caught my eye. I love how it is true to a real-life switch in where the two contacts form a closed circuit and then the current would flow hence activating the device. Of course it happened a little early but lets just call that an arc! | 2010-07-06 03:56:00 Author: tanrockstan34 Posts: 1076 |

Just a heads up.... I beat puzzle 10 without doing most of the steps. After getting through section 1, I moved all the way left and then jumped down to the moving platforms (then jumped right to platform #2). At that point, I just grabbed the bottom of the next moving platform and rode it all the way to the end. | 2010-07-06 17:23:00 Author: ZipCity Posts: 208 |
Yep, that's a ninja solution. If you look at the HD screenshots, there's one of my hanging from one. | 2010-07-06 18:48:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
okay, so you intended that as a solution? I only did it because I couldn't figure out what to do at area 2 of puzzle 10 | 2010-07-06 20:48:00 Author: ZipCity Posts: 208 |
Yep, that's a ninja solution. If you look at the HD screenshots, there's one of my hanging from one. I was playing Aperture Laboratories in a group of 4 the other day, and I tried 8 or so times to grab the bottom by falling towards its direction. Then, warlord just layer-shifted down from it and grabbed. I felt so dumb . It took me 3 tries to actually pass through the vent while hanging... I got squished, then burnt, and then burnt again, but a sensor must have activated a checkpoint the third time. Is there a way to not get squished or burnt? | 2010-07-06 20:49:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
Is there a way to not get squished or burnt? Yeah, go in the hole in the third layer about halfway through the ride and then get on top of the platform. | 2010-07-06 21:01:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

played this level last night. it's exceptionally well done. stayed in the level for more than an hour & didn't get bored at all! most of the visuals look absolutely fantastic!!!! i especially like all the moving parts. best community level i've played in quite a while easily worth 5 stars. looking forward to part 2 only problem i had with it, was test chamber 10. couldn't see where to go. | 2010-07-08 06:13:00 Author: sellfcon Posts: 79 |
Ive got to say, this level is simply eyecandy and logiccandy. It was thrilling to see the companion cube drop from the ceiling tubes again, and good puzzles. I am patiently waiting for Part 2. :SH: | 2010-07-08 06:34:00 Author: ThePineapplizer Posts: 769 |
only problem i had with it, was test chamber 10. couldn't see where to go. Have you tried noting the little "dice" on the walls? They indicate the order in which you need to complete jumps/etc. Where exactly did you get stuck? | 2010-07-08 11:35:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Have you tried noting the little "dice" on the walls? They indicate the order in which you need to complete jumps/etc. Where exactly did you get stuck? I found in one section, the dice stop at 5 and I personally thought that it could have done with a #6 die to follow on. I found the correct solution, but if you are going to add numeric clues, it seems like it's best not to ditch the player towards the end. It's largetly because of the backtracking nature of the section that I found it was a little bit confusing (have I been through that bit before, maybe not, or maybe I'm supposed to go through it again, I'm not even sure where it leads etc.). I think someone's already mentioned that there are a couple of minor camera issues. One that stood out for me was a section early on where you drop down and the obvious route to take, as indicated by the camera, is to go right but there is a switch on the left, which is moved offscreen by the camera (depending on exactly where you land). It's not a major deal but shouldn't take to much to have a slightly less misleading camera in there. Overall it was a cool level and the puzzle design was excellent. Visually it felt a little bland, in comparison with your other recent work, but I understand that is part and parcel of the Portal theme, so I don't think that could be taken as an issue. The only thing visually was that some of the stickered sections (possibly doors, I'm not sure), felt a little tacky and flat and I wasn't really feeling them I'm afraid you get no stars or hearts from me as my PS3 crashed at the scoreboard and I haven't really been back on in the last few days, for various reasons I'll probably give you 5 stars and a heart if you are very lucky, next time I'm on | 2010-07-08 14:43:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
So a couple of days go by and BAM! there's another Comphermc level... you're making me look bad! I witnessed the rebirth of this level and it was surely worth the wait! Even though I've never played Portal or whatever, I really enjoyed this level. Great lighting, visuals and awesome gameplay we've come to expect from mr. Comphermc. Better start remaking the other ones cause now in comparison they look like crap Great job! | 2010-07-08 20:48:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
Have you tried noting the little "dice" on the walls? They indicate the order in which you need to complete jumps/etc. Where exactly did you get stuck? above where all the glass bits are . got as far as those platforms. couldn't work out where to go from there. i saw dice on the walls, but didn't realise they indicated something | 2010-07-09 00:36:00 Author: sellfcon Posts: 79 |

Something weird happend...... Just as I completed this level, my sister called me downstairs............She had made a cake! O.O Also, I couldn't finish. On 9, I got the Companion Cube stuck in where I presume it was ment to go. Maybe I'm just dumb though. I found two of the secrets. It was yet another very fun level, and I have to ask, how quickly can you make levels like this? It wasn't that long ago that Roller Inc came out, and I've just finished my newest level, which is nowhere near the quality of this, and that took me a month. Dude, I played, 5 starred, and hearted this BEFORE it got spotlighted. How? I know that your levels are AWESOME, so you and a few others are the ones I check first before I wander aimlessly through the wilderness of crappy LBP levels. Then when I am done, I finish with one of the good ones, to end on a high note. Back to the level comments : simply THE BEST Portal level thus far in the history of LBP. Wow, it's crazy how far you've come, huh? This is a fantastic remake that blows the original (which was great!) away! The updated visuals offer a little more CompherMC style, but retains the Portal feel. The real star of the level is the puzzles though. Some crazy, brilliant stuff in this. It's not hard, but it does make you think and you'll be amazed at the mazes you navigate toward the end of this level. It's just crazy how well it all works and how it's all seamlessly woven together. It's mind boggling how you pull this stuff off as quickly as you do. Fantastic level! Wow, based on the screenshots you really managed to recreate the aesthetics of Portal. I'm away on vacation without the capability of connecting my PS3 to the internet, so has anyone uploaded a video of this level? Hey man! I just played your level and I thought that it was great! A while back I got portal, which was going for free on Steam (PC games program) and I decided to download it. It turned out to be great fun, and then I heard about this level and I had to play it! The level visuals were great! They captured that somewhat futuristic feel that portal has and the companion cube looked perfect. The gameplay was great to! Since portal was mostly like a puzzle game the kind of gameplay that you featured in this level was perfect with the theme! And the little things that you had with the sound effects and saving each time you went to the next "level" were great, and I really thought that added to the effect of being at the aperture laboratories. The level was great fun and I look forward to seeing more from you! I gave you five stars :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart <3! Keep up the great work! | 2010-07-30 15:28:00 Author: eagerneph Posts: 1536 |
Ahh... Apeture Testing. A truly puzzling level. lol I'll have to say, THE CAKE IS NOT A LIE!!!! erm.. I mean... err, well you didn't see that.... My friends and I truly have fun figuring out your many puzzles. Awesome story board and problem solving. I do believe we spent hours trying to find ALL the rat holes and hidden areas. We did manage to... http://thecake.info/the_cake_600.jpg | 2010-08-26 23:08:00 Author: LWBear2 Posts: 332 |
I played this and loved it! The rooms were quite symbolic to the ones in the actual game and the level had great asthetics. The puzzles were very clever and innovative to the portal levels out there I played it with high expectations and you delivered as usual comphy | 2010-08-26 23:21:00 Author: AssassinatorRFC Posts: 715 |

Brilliant level, the visuals were fantastic and practically 1-1 with the actual game! The puzzling gameplay was enough to have my head scratching at some points, and the storyline couldn't be more compelling. Great work Comphermc! Can't wait till the sequel. | 2010-08-29 16:43:00 Author: PixelDinozoors Posts: 5 |

THANK YOU comphermc for creating this!!!!!!!! Will there be a part 2? In time there may be... but I'm the creator who jumps around to lots of different themes. It would drive me nuts to do another one like this right now. | 2010-08-30 22:56:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I played all the original Aperture Science levels and really enjoyed them, but you took it to a whole new level. The aesthetics were upgraded brilliantly; everything looked gorgeous and the purple lighting was cool (a lot like Interstellar Infiltration). The gameplay was amazing, I recognised a few things from the original but there was some really innovative stuff there, especially room ten. Well done, this was so much fun to play, I can't wait for the rest of the series! =D http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-31 19:37:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |

It really isn't very dark at all, maybe it's your TV? http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-09-14 16:20:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Awesome level ! You recreated perfectly the atmosphere of Portal, the visuals, the dialogues everything ! Hidding some secrets behind the scene was a great idea and the puzzles difficulty was very well balanced. By the way how did you do to make those thin blue laser beam ? (but maybe you want to keep that secret ) Anyway with no hesitation : :star::star::star::star::star: and <3 | 2010-09-16 19:58:00 Author: onisdream Posts: 80 |

Do a search around for it and you'll probably be able to get one. Thanks for the kind words. | 2010-09-16 20:03:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
The laser in the Metal Gear Solid DLC is tweakable in color. Do a search around for it and you'll probably be able to get one. I have a showcase level for the tweakable laser, and the laser is a level complete prize. (You can edit the laser by pressing square on the connector) It was originally gotten by dissolving certain parts of a MGS heavy/rapidfire turret, keeping the mag keys wired to the lasers, and putting the mag keys on the lasers, and destroying everything else. Doing this after a certain patch no longer seems to work correctly. It can now only be gotten Via a prize/friend. I should also note, that it has all the same tweaks a a normal light. except that it only works while foggy/shadow. Normal does not work. | 2010-09-17 15:35:00 Author: Fishrock123 Posts: 1578 |
So i did my own Portal level, and then somebody came and told me you already did a Portal level, gongratulations. You have beat me down in ways i cannot even comprehend, maps like this make me realize i should never even dare to publish anything on Little Big Planet. The Portalist Review! Well, this is it. I think this is as far as i'll ever go in my whole suprisingly short Little Big Planet life. Im a total Portal maniac, i've played the Portal game through literally a THOUSAND times. ( Trust me, i've counted ) I've also played the Portal: Prelude map 500 times. Exact! And because of my crazy love for Portal, i wanted to create something of my own, something grand that people would like playing, something that would be known. But NO! After playing this map i noticed that i am downright worthless, i have no idea how you did even a small part of the map. I loved this map from the start to the end, and i can say i am totally awestruck. There's lasers which i never knew how to use. The pistons don't make the piston sounds, the enviroment is completely Portal-like. ( Except the lighting which is a nice LBP side tint to it in my opinion. ) I only found ONE! secret item. I thought it had a poor item system but no way, i missed 8 secrets if i remember right, the puzzle's got me actually even thinking, and i can play the Portal inside 20 minutes! This map is brilliant from start to end!! And this is me, placing my resignation on making levels... Pros: - Perfect Enviroment - Thinking required puzzles - Perfectly hidden secrets - Long map Cons: - Most of the GLaDOS phrases we're modified. - The turrets we're huge - Music....? PS: As i said this map is perfect, but i couldn't help but to be bugged with some matters which i thought lowered the "Portal" atmosphere. If i may suggest i'd put the music away, or then use " Cries in the wind " extremely silently, as a hissing background. And you could fix the GLaDOS phrases to match the game, i remember all the phrases out from my mind so it bugs me to find something like this. Otherwise, this map is the best map i have ever played in my long LBP gaming time. This is easily compared to anything i have ever seen. I certainly hope you're planning on a part two, because you left me drooling for more. I give you :star::star::star::star::star: for the map and I hearted the map and you as an Author. Well done mate, you completely crushed my will to build anything. With the deepest respects, to one of the best mapmakers of LBP. I thank you. | 2010-09-28 17:23:00 Author: Omnivorium Posts: 16 |
Thanks for the kind words, Omnivorium. My entreaty to you is to not giving up making levels. This was the third time I've tried to make this level. The first one was an utter failure. The second version still exists on Craft Earth, along with two sequels, but it took me a good year with the game to make it properly as you saw it the other day. Thanks again, and don't give in! Use it as inspiration more than anything. | 2010-09-30 17:24:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I tried making a new map i was going to call " Oblivion Bay " A horror shipwreck map, but the meter filled up 50% on the start and it wasn't nearly as propped as Poms's " Miracle of life " for example... =/ Im trying to map but i just can't concentrate on it. Oh btw, i passed your Roller Inc. Loved it. | 2010-10-01 16:20:00 Author: Omnivorium Posts: 16 |
My friend The_Ziggster_2 and I always play this level. It never gets old. I'm a fan of Portal, although I never got to play it. Strange, isn't it? Anyways, awesome level! | 2011-01-01 03:21:00 Author: LWBear2 Posts: 332 |
This was a triumph I'm making a note here, HUGE success! :star::star::star::star::star: + <3 seems far too little. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction! | 2011-01-01 08:04:00 Author: Unknown User |
