Which Icon is Better?

Is an icon with a title for your level more appealing than a cool screenshot from your level, or what other icon should I use?2010-07-01 18:15:00

I always create a custom sticker and use it, based on what I think the icon should look like for what I'm working on.2010-07-01 22:37:00

I do what SledKnight says, basically. I think about what aspects of my level I want to highlight, and I create something to take a picture of and use for my level. For example, if my level were about hunting dragons IN THE FUTURE (idea copyrighted, that sounds awesome >.>), I would make a dragon head with a sniper crossheir in front of it. If I were making a mountain-climbing adventure, I might make a white icon with a dark mountain in the middle and a Sackperson climbing it.

About putting the level name in the icon... I sometimes do this, but it doens't always look nice. If you decide to, you have to pick the write font. Lite_Sleeper has a nice collection of them in a level. If your level name is long, or part of a series, you might want to use abbreviation. For my second level in my 'Epic Leap' series, I made an icon that said 'E.L.2'.

Thank you so much that gives me some ideas for the icons!

If you are going to use a custom sticker, it will get a little squished and distorted if you put it staight on a level badge. Aya042 found that if you cut a slot 2 small grid spaces wide in a block of dark matter, place your custom sticker (still in grid mode) on the bottom edge of the slot then fill the hole up again, it will stretch the picture horizontally. Then by taking another picture of the stretched picture and use that as the badge image, the badge will not be distorted! The stretched appearance counters the compression of the sticker when you use it as a badge image .2010-07-02 13:15:00

I try to imagine what the cover would look like if the level was a regular game, available in stores.

@Heckboy88: Dragon sniping... that does sound cool. When's it done?

I make a colorful abstract that usually includes pictures of characters of the level. Or, if it's say a "mine" theme, I'd have a mine cart with gold inside in front of an orange and yellow colorful background. But that's just me 2010-07-02 14:50:00

Yes, I forgot to mention that. Make sure to use that technique for 'unsquishing' the level badge or it will look crappy.

I would get a font from Lite_Sleeper 's level and make the level title with that font.2010-07-02 19:12:00

I may be a little late to this but I would suggest to use a simple shape or object as a picture for the level, no small details. Something that captures the feel of the level.
Text may get some attention but all I can think of are those spam levels which have the word "WATER" as a badge...

As an example, in my level Deep Danger (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21168-Deep-danger-survival-challenge) I used a carboard cutout af a sackboy, put a missile in front of it and took a picture. It looks nice and is possibly the best level badge that I've made.

The secret to making a custom level badge is to draw people in before they even highlight or select your level. Imagine that your level is floating on the cool pages, if you have a bright and eyecatching badge, people will be more likely to play it just for that reason.2010-07-05 17:36:00

I like using kinda a symbol from the theme of the level. Like if it was sci-fi, some cool kinda octagon shape with different designs on it. It's hard to explain, you'd have to see it.2010-07-08 08:01:00
