I would say there is no reason not to do both (Other than the cost)
Having two PS3's is so much better, in fact it is twice as good as only having 1.

I've seen plenty of reports from users saying that the fix only lasted anything from a few days to a few months.

I'll write it here again for everyone.

The reflow absolutely work if you manage to do it correctly.
I did it and my PS3 is working flawlessly for 4 months, almost 5.
If you need help, just ask.
You only need 2 hours 25 $/?/Euro max, for the hot gun and the silver paste.
Don't make others do it.

Point is, you shouldn't have to. The old fat PS3s are pretty much guaranteed to YLOD eventually, and there's nothing you can do to prevent it. I wouldn't even mind that much had Sony not made it impossible to swap the drive out of a failed PS3.

It's generally believed that the slims are more reliable, but I guess only time will tell.

Oh dear...ive had my playstation since November 2008. I have had one problem with it where the disc's wouldnt load but that was fixed. Its been fine ever since. BUT sometimes when its on it makes a noise like a vaccum cleaner lol not loud but loud enough to hear....is that bad??

I dont want my ps3 to break

Well, gilksy (who's the guy who produced the videos (http://www.yellowlight.co.uk/fix.php) on how to fix the YLOD) claims that if the fan is spinning more quickly (on average) than when you first got the PS3, that's a symptom of a fairly imminent failure, but it could also be due to warmer weather, since the fan speed is partly determined by the ambient room temperature.

I believe the problem is the thermal compound between the two main chips and the heat sink/fan assembly slowly evaporates (at least when I took mine apart, there was very little evidence that there ever was any compound), and eventually provides very little thermal transfer to the heat sink. Consequently the PS3 gets much hotter than it should do, and the constant cycle of it heating and cooling, as you turn the machine on and off again, eventually causes a chip to become detached from the mainboard.

Of course, it's impossible to say if/when it will fail, but if you care about losing your data, then it's well worth making regular backups of anything you care about onto an external device.

If you have plenty of cash to burn, you may prefer not to take the risk, and do a complete system transfer to a new PS3 slim, but the slim (annoyingly) has no support for PS2 games.

If you should get hit with a YLOD, it is possible to fix it (using the aforementioned guide - which worked for me), but it's a complete pain to do, and even when Sony used to provide a service to fix it, they'd only guarantee it for another 3 months, which isn't particularly reassuring.

So them is yer choices, and, yeah, none are particularly appealing.

Scary D:

I've had my PS3 for around about two years now and the hard drive did fail on it once, so that might have been the YLOD but i never saw the light. My dad just took it to work and swapped the hard-drive for a new one from the thousands they have at their office :o

No, no, no
You must see the vids from Gilksy
http://www.youtube.com/user/gilksy1
He's a nice guy that will even answer your mail.

One note, the model in there should be a 20 or 60 GB, the inside of the 40 GB that I repaired is different, but if you watch well the vid, and you're not dumb, you'll understand how to disassemble even the 40 GB.
The trick is to be clean and follow his instructions.
If he says that you must heat the CPU 20 secs, don't do it for 15 or 25.
Clean WELL, EVERY part of the PS3, and spread well the thermal paste.

I suggest to try it, if your warranty is void, then it's up to you guys.
