Low Ratings Because of Difficulty

Archive: 8 posts

I was wondering if anyone else was having problems with their levels being rated lowe because of their difficulty? I've created 2 levels (in a series) that both have some tricky parts of the level. They're not imposssible, and they're not one of those perfect timing bits like you see in some levels. They're perfectly do-able, and add to the challenge of the game. But apparently some people don't want a challenge, as both of my levels were rated low and tagged "difficult," "nerve-wracking," etc. Can anyone tell me how to make players less annoyed? If you think it has something to do with my levels, they're called "Green: The Tree" and "Red: The Volcano."

I just want to make good, challenging levels, but I guess that isn't what works in LBP unless specifically stated.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Are you using infinite checkpoints?

Not really any easy way to stop this as the majority of players are younger.
I tend to add "hard" in the title of the level, as most of these younger players ignore the level's description.

Sorry dude, Difficult levels are doomed to be popular by the LBP masses, 80% of the people only like levels where you just press -> to go to finish.

In other words, they only like watching the game, not playing it, so any sort of trap/ challenge makes the level bad in their eyes, because they actually have to do something.
So..yeah sorry dude, no matter how well it looks and how well built it is, if its difficult, its gonna get low-rated.

But don't worry m8, there are planty of challenge players/ creators out there (myself included) that really like those kindas of levels, so not all is lost.

So if you're gonna build that style of levels, don't expect many hearts or a high rating, which shouldn't matter much of course, but just saying if you want to get hearts and rating, i'd reccomend making some eye candy levels.

Players get annoyed really easily on LBP for some reason. They can get annoyed if:

They die repeatedly at the same spot
They die, and they don't feel it was their fault.
Checkpoints are spaced too far apart.
They run out of lives.
They don't know what to do.
They get stuck for a long time.

OK, so I was repeating myself a bit there, but the point is, the LBP community can be famously hard to please. If you don't know why your levels are being rated down, pull in a friend who's never played the level before and turn off your controller - watch what they do. They may even tell you "This is frustrating" or "What do you do?" It's a great way to find out what your level's first impressions are.

Just remember that the majority of lbp's community are young kids who wouldn't know tripe from venison. They're just looking for a quick buzz and couldn't care how much blood, sweat and tears you poured into building your level, so if it seems more challenging than their little minds can cope with in the hour between school and tea time then they will rate your level down, 1 star and "rubbish".

If you're looking for mainstream success and recognition then don't make hard levels. Make something simple with a rocket cheetah and some sharks instead. On the other hand, if you're looking only for the respect of your peers here at LBPCentral then I think you'll find we're generally a more mature and tolerant crowd then the casual community. Most people here will judge a level on all it's artistic merits, not just the difficulty. Of course if your level is generally of poor quality, difficulty aside, you'll still get rated down anyway, but at least with some constructive criticism instead of abusive comments.

Exactly.. my two best levels are 3 and 4 stars. It doesn't bother me at all and would put that up against any of the so called 5 star wonders blotting out the cool pages at the moment. The ratings are screwed up and always have been. I care more about what folks from LBPC think over the entire community.

Yeah, the LBP 'star' system is (if I could tag it) 'rubbish'. I always search based on number of hearts, because those tend to be more reliable (people heart what they REALLY like).

Also, Eliminator, I sent you a PM on my thoughts on the levels you are asking about. Overall, they are not that difficult. The issues I had with them where poor use of camera angles and unpredictable game mechanics. If you work on polishing that stuff up, and spend some extra time adding visual diversity, I think you'll get better ratings.

Of course... that's coming from a guy that still hasn't published a single one room level because I've been playtesting it for weeks and tweaking out bugs/gameplay issues. If you don't test a LOT, you'll overlook all those issues that only spring up occasionaly and when people try to get some place they shouldn't be able to get to... LOL.
