Strange "Pausing Tension" Glitch

Archive: 5 posts

I found this glitch during the production of my first level, "Donut Factory". It's extremely annoying and such great a nuisance that it caused me to completely scrap an entire portion of the level.

To recreate this glitch, you'll need to first create a dynamic plus-shaped box midair so that it has plenty of space for additions. Next, create 4 dynamic arrows extending outwards from the plus-shaped box so that it looks similar to this:

Now attach the arrows to the plus-shaped box using pistons. Edit the pistons so that each one of them has the same minimum and maximum length. Keep the rest of the settings set to default. Now unpause and allow for the creation to self-assemble into the shape of an X.

Now,what exactly is the glitch you ask? When you pause the game in create mode for a while and later unpause it, the object will suddenly move due to tension "collected" while paused. If you keep it paused for long enough, the creation will explode and send everything connected to it via piston flying.

Wow, cool glitch. But, I'm much more excited for the idea of a Donut Factory level! Can't wait to see it!2010-06-27 19:56:00

I have been experiencing this glitch befor when making flying machines. I put rods onto a ridicolusly large amount of peach floaty and something static and the rods burst2010-06-27 20:03:00

my first triathlon vehicle was experiencing this, so i captured it and made an emmitter to emmitt it. i was eventually going to do this but i ran into a problem. you can't capture objects, so i made a modification to it. i replaced the slik tire objects with rubber circles.2010-06-28 05:45:00

Interesting... I have experienced various flavors of the same glitch, but not this precise issue.

I'm about 99% sure this boils down to the drifting bug - materials drift slightly (perhaps not even visibly) every time you pause, unpause, save, etc. The slight shift causes tension build up in pistons and rods set to stiff, which eventually results in some type of major freakout and/or explosion.

There are two things you can do to compensate for this issue. First, make sure you corner edit every single object in your level. It was discovered by Gilgamesh several months ago that corner edited material is not affected by the drifting bug. All you have to do is add a corner and/or delete a corner.

Even with the drifting bug addressed, you are still likely to get tension build up in pistons and rods. I learned this the hard way after spending a couple of very long days wrestling with a particularly finicky AT-AT. The way to remove this tension, at least temporarily, is relatively simple. Change both objects that your piston or rod is connected to to static, unpause your game, and briefly set the piston or rod to non-stiff. This will allow the endpoints to "settle in" and remove the tension. Once you have set your piston or rod back to stiff, change your object(s) back to dynamic as necessary.
