Dark Water chapter 1rsqviper
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/5836/aphoto6y.jpgWhen it comes to an epic level, this is one. Several challenges lay before you as you try to figure out what is causing the water to turn black and deadly. Swimming thru the treacherous goo will lead to certain death so swim around you must.

Not all water, this level will take you to the highest mountain tops as well as the deepest depths. This is an adventure level, part 1 of what I plan to be 3 and contains a final, GIANT, boss. You are about to set on a journey where you will fight pirates, eels and a mysterious and dangerous creature in the deep.
This is: Dark Water chapter 1

Just went thru my level and updated quite a few things including lighting, detailing and fixing a few bugs I found. If anyone has played thru it already you should see some significant changes in the mood of the level. Hopefully this will immerse you into the level quite a bit more.

I also adjusted the end boat and how it works. It now works with wonderful logic! (and it all goes automatically, no more 3-way switch that can cause jerking when you accidentally toggle it!)

Ok, I just played through now. This was a mixture of fun and frustration for me.

All started well, nice section with the jellyfish, but then I spent half an hour trying to get through the watery tunnel of spikes, only to die in the gas afterwards. Although I pushed on and eventually did it again, reaching the next checkpoint, the guy I was playing with gave up and left. You might want to widen the tunnel or something there, because if people quit in frustration then they tend to rate a level badly.

I loved the merman with the fork. Not sure if it was meant to be goofy, but it really made me lol. Reminded me of Morph (a plasticine kids character from UK television).

The little race section was fun. Took me by surprise when that giant eel scoffed me.

Not sure why you decided to switch to using a limited life checkpoint at the next lift, but I lost all my lives here. I didn't try again because of the whole spikey tunnel frustration. I persevered the first time, but I wasn't up for putting myself through all that again. If you could stick to infinite life checkpoints, people will be more inclined to see the level through to the end. I'll be sure to play again if you make any improvements, but I've rated the level 4 star for now.

Thanks, Ungreth. And what part is there limited checkpoint? I must've missed one because I went thru and made them all unlimited, I thought. Seems like I missed one. At the top of the lift? I could've sworn I made that unlimited. I'll have to look thru it again then.

The spikey part: **** that part. I have widened it and it's always too small, now the thermal of the level is capped and the shapes on both sides are too complicated. Maybe I should just can that whole part, but I that part. *sigh* Possibly make an (easy) level and change around a few things. Too bad you didn't make it to the giant octopus. I wanted to hear what you had to say about that.

As for the merman, yea he as supposed to be a bit funny. I also liked the way he came out.

Thanks for the review, I'll retool the spikes and look for the spawn point I missed.

Oh, btw! I played your Scrumpy Sack on cast today 4 player. lol! It was pretty fun, but then it blew up on us. I think someone was laggy, but the griefing was in full effect as usual. Peopel trying to take apples from each other was great and I somehow tossed a person down Scrumpy's mouth. haha! I'll post the highlight in your thread once I YouTube it!

Update: I posted it in your thread. Enjoy!

---------------

Ok, I just spent several hours doing upgrades and changes to this level. The following changes (many thanks to Ungreth's feedback) have been made:

The serpent-like spike tunnel has been overhauled, widened as well as the entrance changed so you go by the spawn point.
Infinite spawn added on bottom of cliff near the lift.
Infinite spawn added right after teh serpent tunnel
Created a warning sign for eel lairs
On top of cliff, added sign to make it even more obvious as to what you must do.
Updated characters and how they look as well as what some say.
Increased final area's pirate sensor
Adjusted Final Boss decorations
Light placement thruout some area changed slightly

Thanks for the feedback so far! Keep it coming.

hey dude I just finish playing your level and it was fun but difficult. I like the way the jellyfish have there own motion and I like the characters in the level. But for the truth it was very difficult specially wend you start the race underwater the 4 spinning blades that was difficult I deid 40 times in that part I think you should increse the space for the level

Also the black gas in the water it felt like a puzzle I cant find the way out. Also I think you should put some cameras in the game specially for the puzzle and the boss fight.

There are somethings that you need to fix in your level but it was a fun level

I gave it a :star::star::star::star: there are some things you need to fix but it wasn a nice level

Also dude can you F4F my level please here is the link to my level thread: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=29356-Sackboy-And-The-Demantoid-Crystal-%28part1-2%29

Played through, liked it a lot.

two issues I found, at the bit where the guy tells you to go fetch his dog, I didn't realise I had to go up the elevator and instead went straight to the dog, I got stuck behind him in the little alcove and had to restart.

the other was with the boss, when he starts spitting starfish, some of them pop and leave spikes behind so you end up with the water being full of spikes which makes the boss harder than perhaps intended.

other than that it's really good. 4 stars

my sugestion about the spinning stars part is to either see if you can have them pull in just a tiny bit more, im guessing you are using pistons so just try to adjust them first, and make them stay in longer if possible to give people more time to make it through. just some easy tweaks that dont take up any thermal or retooling of the level.2010-06-29 20:00:00

Okay, I've played again since you made changes, and everything seems much improved. That pesky limited life checkpoint is gone and the spike tunnel is nowhere near as frustrating to navigate, although aesthetically the electrified material which you replaced the last few spikes with looked a bit out of place. I managed to get to the end this time and see the rest of the level anyhow. I enjoyed the bit where you bomb the cliff away and the persuit by the wheeled dog. Simplistic stuff, but fun. The end boss was technically quite basic and fairly easy to beat, but still looked pretty cool and was fun to fight.

Gotta dig those giant octopuses, especially when they throw crabs and starfish in your face!

Wow, awesome feedback, guys! I have gone thru and made the following changes based on your great feedback!

The spinning spikes area, I turned up the pausing form 1.5/s to 2.5/s and it makes a big difference. I do want the area to be a bit tight, but it's far more fair now and your timing does not need to be perfect.
I added cameras to the gas area to make the direction you need to go more obvious.
I added to the speech bubble to the man needing his dog so he says to check w/Lark on top of the cliff (Lark is the skeleton) as well as added an arrow above the switch to symbol that it goes UP.
I removed the alcove from behind the dog. I can't even remember why it's there, but watch something break now.
Fixed the right, third arm of the octopus since the two 3rd arms had different pauses.

Now, as for the starfish, I don't know what you are talking about with the spikes. These are emitted, timed things and the entire thing is taken away. I am thinking maybe they were getting broken by other starfish or the arm to leave spikes in the water. What I did was double the time to be emitted to 4.0 and reduced lifetime to 3.5.

Also, thanks Ungreth for giving it a second run thru! Makes a big difference knowing if the changes actually helped.

Ha...an excellent level...
I guess from reading here that you had already made the changes others suggested and they worked well.
I had no abnormal difficulty or couldn't see anything wrong worth reporting.
The octopus at the end is cool..

I gave it 4 stars and hearted you as a creator.

Hey, sorry it's taken such an while for me to give feedback on your level, but I've had issues connecting to PSN (typical) but hopefully it's all fixed. I'm not sure whether I played the right version since I simply defeated the octopus and took the boat to the end of the level.

But I loved the level's aesthetics, the dark, grimy atmosphere really helped with the mood, the mechanic of dark water was also makes your level unique but I didn't really feel it had much of an mechanic of the level expect to keep the player where you want them to go. Maybe in other levels incorporate the Dark Water into puzzles etc. The Octopus is also slightly unforgiving, I died multiple times from the stars being shot out when of you have to destroy the 3rd tentacle. They seem to fire out too fast and they block your path.

Sadly that's all I could play, I don't know if I played the wrong level but everyone seems to have played something more, I just jumped on the boat after I defeated the octopus and it drove me to the end? Is this supposed to happen?

But I liked the boss overall and the level had an unique and weird story to it.

:star::star::star::star:

I gave it 4 stars out of 5 because I think the whole series of levels have great potential & I'm looking forward to playing the rest of the series of levels.

Dang, that was my bad. Last night I realized what I had done. Basically, what happened was I moved the starting spawn to the end so I could test the octopus and after I was pleased with the changes I forgot to move the spawn back to the beginning before publishing it, lol.

You played about 10% of the level. My fault! I was hoping no one played it during that time, but I guess you did.

The spawn is now back at the beginning if you want to give it another go.

As for the starfish, they are a timing thing. If you go down along the octopus arm, you can time going between each starfish between each shot. It's tough, but doable. Another way is to kill the left side first, then the right side is WAY easier.

Thanks for playing and reviewing! Sorry about the confusion.

Ah, ok that's an relief. Thought I was doing something wrong. I'll give it another playthrough and give you another review

EDIT: Right I've just had another go at the level, I think it's really difficult and it's frustrating. The difficulty is one thing but the checkpoints are placed in unforgiving area's. e.g. The spinning blades were really difficult then the unpredictable eels that pop out of the wall are back to back with no checkpoint in between. Meaning as soon as I beat the blades I got killed by the eels and had to do it all again. I think perhaps include some more checkpoints or make the puzzles an bit more forgiving. I thought the difficulty of the level will put off and ton of people.

But despite the difficulty I still find your level charming and cool. The atmosphere holds up and there is some random humour, but I stand by my 4 stars review. The dark water mechanic definitely makes your level an bit more unique.

So i played the level, really good, but i didnt complete it due to the most random mishap ever. The dog flipped over on its back when the lift came back down, and i couldnt drag him to the man to open the door. I was in a rush so ill finish it tomoro2010-07-05 06:05:00

Okay, just played your level.

It was pretty average-looking. Nothing stood out to me, although the merman with the fork was pretty creative.

The gameplay was pretty challenging, which I think is something good. However, I couldn't finish this level. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what you were supposed to do after getting the one-eyed purple bean. I dropped it in the box right next to the merman. SOme bomb exploded and that was it. I couldn't find an exit out of the gas maze, nor figure out how to get to the area on top of the maze.
It's a pity, because the level looked like it could get more fun later on.

Here are some things you may want to fix:

-There are no gills at the checkpoint right after the spiked tunnel. Was that intentional? If so, it is okay.
-The race in which you have to get past some spinning shurikens is a bit too hard to get through. You have to pretty much have perfect timing. You may want to consider lowering the difficulty of this part a bit.

Well, that's sadly all I can say about your level. The challenges were entertaining and all, but I couldn't get past the gas maze. So :star::star::star:.

My F4F is: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=26429-Onion-Gale-Obstacle-Challenge-Mix.

There is no gas maze, the bomb explodes and opens the dock. Go where the bomb went and it is now open (the rest of the level). I just added a mouth when that happens so you see it open which should help out.

The race is supposed to be tough, though and it's very doable. It's a good note to take that you cannot go balls-out in this level, you have to think and time things.

And as for the dog flipping.. lol! Well, I put i a fix so that once the cliff is brought down, the platform that you need to get to the top of the cliff is destroyed. That'll fix that!

As for F4Fs, no more after this post. If you want an F4F, go check out Dark Water chapter 2! (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=29859-Dark-Water-chapter-2) (until the F4Fs expire there)

The problem is that my bomb didn't go anywhere. It exploded right where it was. I guess that's an unfrequent bug. You may want to check out if you can fix that.

Okay, I'll replay the level and see if the bomb moves this time.

It did!? I don't even know how that could happen unless you were in a game with someone else and it hit them. I don't know how to fix that, honestly. Weird. Something must've just glitched. If it happens again please let me know, especially if you see why it does that.

Hey RSQViper. The level is descent, but you had some fun ideas that added some good gameplay to this level. The visuals are a bit lacking so I recommend adding some decorations and stickers. The boss part on the other hand is great but a bit frustrating due to multiple emitting crabs and starfishes. Overall I gave it 4 stars.2010-07-13 23:43:00

ok im playing as im reviewing so lets get started
-first off...yes i like ur hat LOL
- snake monster in the water popping out...super cool good idea.
-nice jellyfish they look good.
-the decor is very nice, lighting is good, and i love that u took the time to corner edit things and give it a rough jagged look. it truly paid off.
-the music choice is very epic and good.
-nice merman..love the tattoos he has LOL
-ok this deadly gas is very frustrating, in some places it is SO SO thin an area to get past, maybe widen it a bit. (between merman and the entrance of cave.)
I cant for the life of me get past the sawblades. when they do retract i die on the one that doesnt. :/ wish i could continue but ive died like 30 times trying, i dont think i can get past them >.< ill heart and try again some other time. maybe you could make the other sawblade retract?

Are you playing on LBP2, Purple? Or the LBP1 level? I have 2 versions of this so please let me know.

I do need to adjust the saw blades a tad and over on the LBP2 side of things the gas... I don't know what mm changed but gas spreads out more now so it made this level REALLY tough in some places. I need to edit it.

Thanks for the review, you must've gotten here from my signature because this is old. haha. But thanks for the feedback! I'll let you know when I fix this stuff. Hopefully tonight.

EDIT: Oh, if you clicked the queue above it's the LBP2 version. That makes sense.

Oh, and if you liked this level, try out chapter 2. Or even try out Dizzy Wheel Challenge (my newest) in my sig.

Well, I think I might be done with this level with the following changes. If anyone finds a bug, though, let me know. Here's the million changes.

The area people complain about the most, the spinning blades:

Piston driving blades have been slown down
Nearly double the pause at the blades
Blades sink far back into the rock so travel is easy when detracted
Just past 1/2 way into the blades is now a player sensor that triggers the checkpoint at the other side
These changes make you very, very happy.

Prawn will now yell at you when you try to enter the exit (which is impossible to enter) but he will tell you to go UP to get in.

Dark Water that is close together has been greatly widened since LBP2 makes gas float to ridiculously far.

Cameras:

At the spike area, I think I have made it so in multiplayer if someone dies they will not spawn while people a still in the spikes. This cased major problems getting thru there as it makes the front player unable to see and then THEY die. Oh, it was all very funny to watch but also frustrating to play.
At the merman I added two cameras. One to see him better and another to make it easier to see where to go up and not hit Dark Water
The lift tha tgoes up the ledge's camera is now ON the lift so you can see above you and see the spikes coming, when to jump, and where to jump.
Added camera above the final boss to you can see down better.

When you destroy the cliff, a sign now pops out telling you to JUMP down.

Fixed a plain checkpoint.

Removed the dog, replaced with a sackbot. Made sackbot have things to say at certain situations.

Made it harder to die at the very end by pushing Dark Water back from the boat.

At merman, when you arrive there is now a player sensor to activate the checkpoint so you don't miss it and end up back at the spike tunnel exit. Also adjusted the scuba so you pick it up at the spawn.

Whew! There you go! Enjoy the changes! The level still has challenge, but I think I removed some of the major frustration.

I can't really review this level fairly as I didn't complete it.
The entire first bit was extremely frustrating, not in a good way either.
You have one underwater bit that requires really precise swimming. Unfortunately, the swimming in LBP isn't precise at all since your character makes random jerks if you change direction. It's the part with the spikes on the walls. Might wanna make that a little wider.
I got through the rest up to a part where you had to blow up a cliff. I dragged the bomb over and it didn't go off so I had to kill my character and jump it to make it explode.
Then I'm pretty sure the level just broke. It told me to jump off the edge, I tried it multiple times, and I just fell in the gassy water.

I might give it a go later, but so far I've been left with a bad impression.

You fell into the water? The cliff wasn't at the bottom covering the hole you created with the bomb to go out of the water? THat's so weird. I don't know where the cliff could go... I'll take a look at it.

As for the spikes the key is to not use X to swim. It's actually not hard to get through it if you just take it easy and don't rush. Heck I just played it and we swam thru it fast and lived. This level IS challenging. It's supposed to be.
