Anyone have Windows 7? Cool! You also have speech recognition!

Archive: 17 posts

I found a really cool thing on Windows 7 the other day, and have been playing about with it. Speech recognition is awesome, it actually understands pretty much everything you say, such as "Open Windows Explorer" or "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." You have to speak clearly for it to work, but I said "Click LBP for PSP" on the forum page, and the speech recognition tool found it and clicked it for me. It's pretty intuitive.

Not that I'd expect anyone to reply to this (I just had to tell someone about it), but discuss if you like!

PS: This whole post was written using speech recognition - I haven't touched the keyboard!

I just tried this but it won't recognise that I have a built in mic when I get to the set up screen

If I click on the sound recorder in Windows it recognises it no problem so I have no idea what's going on.

@Jack, from memory you have three different options of mic you can choose from - you need to click "other" because yours is built in. Dunno if that helps or not.

@rtm: A listening car is better than a listening laptop any day, 'specially when you can save quicker using the keyboard than saying "Click Office button, save" lol. I think you win

If you said "Drive me to the store" would it listen?

I don't reckon, not unless rtm's car is JUNIOR, a car being developed in some country I can't remember (US I think) that knows the Highway Code, detects the road and other traffic and drives entirely automatically.2010-06-24 21:12:00

I tried it out after reading your post, and it is very efficient but also confusing. I'm also writing this with my voice, although it took me many tries to get that last phrase right. It certainly is a nice thing to play with, but I won't be using often, since it is not very stable. Also, I sound like a moron. However, controlling iTunes with the program is undoubtedly awesome.2010-06-24 23:35:00

Controlling things like PCs and games consoles (yes, I'm looking at you XBOX!) with speech isn't that great, because you can usually do things much quicker by pressing the buttons. Remote-control things, like stereos, would be better to voice-control, 'specially if you're like me and lost the remotes every other day.2010-06-25 16:42:00

So i dont know if it will work. Plus imagine me sitting there talking to my screen holding a mic like that to my mouth LOL

Wait, you can play games consoles with voice recognition? :O

"Shoot that guy over there"
"Jump over that wall"
"Oh no! Incoming, duck!!"
"No, don't go towards the duck!! Crouch!!"
"Ugh... this is a piece of crap."
"No! Stupid thing, DON'T do a crap"

...

I tried it and it worked reasonably well.
One problem is that my mic is in the monitor and it is too far away so you have to yell at it...
I think a head set would work wonders.
