Sketches + DUNE project.

Archive: 35 posts

Hi!
I had always been planning to make a level based around the DUNE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_%28novel%29) book series world, which some of you may have heard about (yup, the desert planet!)
I've lately been thinking about it, and I just couldnt help it but to chunk out a few sketches of it. Enjoy!

http://i67.servimg.com/u/f67/12/57/13/73/dune110.jpg

The level would be based around some baddies stealing some precious spice and escaping by using an airship. Luckily for you, the good guys got themselves a handy sandworm, which is pretty useful in this kind of situations.
Basically, you get to engage and attack the mean, mean asirhip and the baddies driving it untill you finally get the spice back. I'm thinking I'll add a timer to the whole lvl, in order to add some adrenaline to the whole thing!

It would only be a level, though, I honestly already hate lvl series!

PS: To any fellow DUNE fan out there, I'm aware that this doesnt look much like the films, books or anything; it's my very personal take on it (:

I've read all the Dune books...it was rather painful, wish I'd stopped after the first 3! I do think this could make a cool level but I find the design of your "ship" unfortunate and not family friendly. 2010-06-23 15:08:00

Oh, god, I swear I had no intention of making it resemble the most beloved part of a male. Haha, I'm cracking up right now!
Though, it make me wonder: why was it that painful? It's been such a joy to me!

The sketch that got me was the one where the valve has come off and "spice" is shooting out.

> why was it that painful?

I just thought after the initial set of books that the series lost focus and got really confusing...the first book was great...for me it went steadily downhill from there.

Nice to hear that, jump_button! In fact, it was your sketches thread which inspired me to draw all this stuff up, so I'm happy to hear you like them.
Neither cant I wait too, I want to get doing that lvl already! Though, the costumes might be impossible to make, since I doubt the costume editor gives you that much freedom. But hey, who knows!

Hey, how'd you know I was a Dune fan lol! I've read all the book, new and old, and it's easily one of my favorite series of all time. This looks awesome. I've seen a few Dune tributes before but none that really do the series justice. I think you could really pull this off well! The sand worm and the spice collector would be a blast to build, and going by your sketches you've got some awesome designs in mind. You're gonna have to keep me posted on this lol. looks awesome!2010-06-23 17:28:00

I've read them all too and seen the movie a million times.... well, hundreds. I've only played one Dune level in LBP that was even remotely awesome so to find your working on one is a really exciting prospect! I like your visual take on the characters and landscape. Yea, the vehicle.... that's what I thought of first too. Perhaps adjusting a few things will stop that association from happening. 2010-06-23 17:46:00

Thanks, Duffluc and Morgana! The fact that such great creators are also DUNE fans makes me very, very happy! I think that I know to which level you are refering to, btw. I also played it but I think that it didnt captur specially well the awesomness of the DUNE world. So hey, Im happy gonna be the one that finally brings DUNE to LBP. Way to go!
About the vehicle, I think I'll keep the design like that for now; maybe when built into LBP it wont look so falic anymore.

Shoulda known you were such a good drawer - these drawings are works of art on their own, even though they're only schematics. I'm looking forward to this - when are you next on LBP? You were on MW2 all last night 2010-06-24 07:48:00

TBH the best bit of these are the coments/titles (good guys!) lol. Looks cool though, and I actually like the fact you're doing your own spin around the concepts of the books rather than trying to reproduce them...

From the description I figure this will be kinda like an extended minigame, or are you planning more than that?

WRT the books, I gave up at God Emporor of Dune... It's was interesting but overall not actually enjoyable. The first was an absolutely epic tale and really compelling, but I felt they just gradually went downhill after that I am really curious how well the new film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1160419/) is gonna capture it (badly, I fear).

Your drawings look great, I wish I could draw like that ! I've never been good at drawing.

Anyway, like KillzoneQuinn, I never heard of Dune... And unlike KillzoneQuinn, I love reading I have no excuse...

Hmmm, you made me want to start reading this series... As if I weren't overworked enough, thanks !

Unless the enemy ship is the "official" design, I'd maybe remake it cuz....y'know. Instead of a spice "valve", how about a cargo hold full of spice barrels(perhaps if you damage it enough a barrel falls out and you get scored depending on how many barrels you got). Just to kill off the innuendo and stuff. Besides that, looks cool.2010-06-24 17:22:00

As for some peoples comments, you may want to alter the ship's design slightly. Add a back wing or something.

Aslo, let me get this strait, is one whatever planet dune is on, arn't there giant worms with tri-jawed mouths? Just to make sure I'm on track.

I can definetely see where you are coming from. I actually gave up after reading the very first one, until somehow I ended up with the books written by his son, which are a much easier read. It was nice, cause those provided a background for me to enjoy the actual series when I finally got around and tried to read them again.
And about if it will be a minigame, yes and no. It will be a whole level with a timer. The only thing comparision that comes to mind is Destiny! , and I dont think i'd consider that level a minigame.
Oh, and I had no idea about the new film. Lets hope its good. Not always remakes are bad!

I actually dont reccomend those books. Its an incredibly though read, and in all honesty, I'm very surprised that those series have that many fans. They sure grew on you, but hells, do you really need to make quite an initial effort!

Now that's a good idea. A more complicated ship could definetely open up for more gameplay possibilities! I really need to think about this now.

Yup, there sure are enormous worms in there. My uncle was there some summers ago, and he came back with some very cool photos of him mounting one of those giants beasts.

Great drawings!

Thaaaaat actually makes me wonder... how do you know? I have only got one lvl published to date which is both glitched and outdated, so its an enigma to me where does that praise come from! But, anyways, thanks!

I'm liking the drawings (and I mean that in the least homo-erotic way possible. I didn't even notice until everyone commented on it, I guess I'm the only one without a dirty mind here ). I was expecting an RTS remake, but this could make a great level. 2010-06-24 23:44:00

He is also on the project. I'm aware that all this is maybe a bit too much forward planning, but hey, I'm excited about it!

RTS = Real Time Strategy, you know, like Warcraft, Starcraft, or Dune 2, the first RTS I ever played. (Warcraft was the last RTS I ever played. I got bored with them fast, so it's nice to see you're not going that direction. )2010-06-26 14:32:00

Hehe, can't wait to see what you've thought up! Are you considering starting this project in LBP1 (just building objects, props etc) then moving it to LBP2?

@Duffluc: I plan on waiting till LBP2; I'm kinda busy atm!

Okay, basic things about the level:
-You control a sackbot. Such sackbot looks exactly as you do.
-If more players join, they'll each get a sackbot.
-Because of the sackbot thingie, payers wont be able to join in mid level.
-You control a sackbot not because I'm planning a HUD or anything, simply because at certain points I'll need the player to do very basic and simple things that sadly a normal sackboy cant do, like assigning the square button to do certain things at very pricise moments. What I'm trying to say is that you wont need to re-learn LBP, controls will mainly be the same as always.
-I'm considering split screen, but I'm not sure it will be necessary, since players ought to be altogether.
-The level will be mostly set at night. Deserts at night look very beautiful, and I've never seen many takes on that in LBP.

The events unfold like this:
1-The baddies (you know who you are, harkonnen guys!) are -unsurprisingly-draining some spice from the series, with one of their mobile draining factories. The good guys (some random fremen) try to stealthly infiltrate and prevent the baddies from flying away with their treasure. But I never liked stealthiness, so they get discovered after taking out the very first guard.

2-Cutscene: Not actually a cutscene. I'm aiming to do something kind of "innovative" here. If any of you ever played God of War you'll know what im refering to. I plan on making a cutscene where you have to push certain buttons at the right moment in order to make your sack success in whatever he is doing. From what I've read about lbp2, this is completely doable, even easy to pull of!
The cutscene would consist on the fremen sackbot running from a lil' harkonnen airship which shoots missils and stuff to the sack, and showing how the whole fremen group dispersates scatters, while the whole spice draining complex goes "red alert, fremen sighted"

3-Cutscene ends, and little chase starts. You travel a bit through the whole spice draining complex while many things shoot even more things at you. This way, we can quickly show the draining complex in a cool way (I'll submit a drawing on this lil' chase). The chase ends when you climb over a spice deposit and a missile aimed towards you explodes it.

4- Again, another God of War style cutscene. The spice deposit explosion propulsates you up, towards the airship that was attacking you. You grab it (by pressing the right button at the right time during the cutscene, as I said) while the airship get catched on fire because of the explosion. It kind of flies away, with you grabbed on it, and it looks like its gonna crash or something, since its malfunctioning. Luckily, when looks like its your very end, you see a sandworm under you, with all your fremen pals riding it. You let go the airship, which immediately crashes.

-5 ...And the part that I have planned on my very firsts drawings kind of starts, where you get to hunt down all the remaining harkonnen spice carrying ships.

I'll submit drawings of all this stuff I said above, btw.

Ok, People, I'm aware it sounds complicated, but I'm confident I know more or less how to pull it out, since parts 1, 3 and 5 are separated by the cutscenes 2 and 4, so you dont notice that you'll be controling different sackbots in parts 1, 3 and 5 since the transition between those is unnoticable.

I'd appreciatte any ideas, modifications and whatever you have to offer; all this are sandcastles in the air, so now is the moment to make changes!

How do you make the sackbot appear like the player?

As mentioned in this super informative thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=28726-New-Tools-Features-and-Updates-in-LittleBigPlanet-2) its is possible to make the sackbot look exactly like the player that is controling it. It isnt mentioned in the OP, though, it was said in one of the multiple question/answer pages after it.

You already thought about everything, Keldur!
I take whatever is written there with a grain of salt, and I stopped to read everything since things started to pop up randomly, without sources, etc...
I'm on the waiting stance.

Oh, no worries, If im not wrong, the fact that sackbots can be set to look like the sackboy is controlling them was confirmed by Wexfordian himself, who as you may know attended to the create jam, so chances are he is right about it!

If Im able to, this very night I'll upload some more sketches, illustrating what I explained.
Keep your eyes peeled!

I wonder how easy/hard it would be to do quick time events in LBP2. Good luck to you sir on adding those in, since everything is suppose to be super easy in LBP2 it shouldn't be too hard. 2010-06-30 10:34:00

It really shouldnt be difficult. I just have to set up a cutscene with asackbot that isnt the one the sackboy is controlling BUT looks exactly like that one does, and make it do a certain something and fail. BUT if you press the right button at the right time (when a message in vavuum material appears telling you to press the button), instead of failing, it will achieve whatever it was doing. I actually tried doing this in LBP1 with magic mouths and the R1 button solely, and it sure worked.

And sorry for the delay of the next sketches, I got them drawn, its just that I had no time to scan. Im friggin busy these days!
