Well, it's kinda hard to give you advice without looking at it, but here it goes:
I usually like adding little hidden LEDs between layers. Then use big Fairy Lights to light up the surface. I suggest you look at a color wheel and check out different combinations of complimentary colors. That's what I did for mine

I believe the guy want's to know how to create light ning, not light ing. : )

I've never tried creating actual lightning so I wouldn't know. However, you could get a nice flash effect by attaching a random generator up to some thunder sound effects and global lighting switches. With this, you get the flash of distant lightning. Search LBP for "lightning generator" for examples of what I mean.

As for an actual lightning effect on screen, the first idea that comes to mind would be to create a large billboard out of a dark material. Then with a glass material, cut a lightning design into the billboard. Then you could put a few LEDs behind the billboard. Try to place them in such a way that the glass catches the highlights from the LEDs. Another idea is to add an electricity hazard effect to your lightning cutout, and see what you can do with that.

Play around with some ideas like that. Once you have some lightning props you're satisfied with, throw them into an emitter with a 0.1 second lifetime. Attach that emitter to your random generator and voil?, lightning. : )

not done it myself but there is some logic that can help you.... I think it was on one of incinerator22's logic levels.

Basicly you need to have a couple of mag key switches put them on a piston (set to direction) and link them to environmental switch each.
One in the down position (nearly always on set time to say 0.4s) the other higher up with an environment set foggy and bright set to 0.1s change time. and piston time to 0.1s have a play around with the settings.

The physical lightning bolt you can do with emitters

Haven't done it myself but this is a sound theory. You could even make a strobe light level.... ohh I gotta try that!

I've recently created a lightning effect that I'm quite pleased with.

If you want me to show you, just add me and I'll give you a quick tutorial in online create.

I know thin glass sticked white and lit appropriately makes nice muzzle flash, it should work for lightning too, just with a different shape for the glass.2010-06-23 14:11:00

You could try emitting electrified glass.2010-06-23 19:17:00

If you look at my above post (#8) it describes how to make an evironmental flash... I think you mentioned you wanted something in the background.

Flashing the environment switches will give the effect of cloud lightning. Alternatively you can have a more localised effect with the same mag key setup connected to a giant foggy spotlight with a reasonably wide angle.

Hope this helps

I was going for more of a tesla coil or electrolaser kind of thing when I did mine, but it might help you anyway. What I did was start with plasmafied thin layer glass (search some glitch levels and you should be able to find plasma material pretty quickly, or Aya and I have nice samples but I won't be able to get on for almost a week), made a nice jaggy design out of it and then made another, similar one. Then I used the compression tool (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24434-Merging-Objects-or-Materials-aka-Compression-Tool) to overlap them them. I also added in a vein of electrified glass, but that might not fit the look you're going for. I added gassed fairy lights (gassed and made really small so they're nearly invisible) to add some extra illumination on the lightning bolt and anything nearby. Then I made a second version of the bolt (I just clicked L3 to reflect it) and rigged two emitters with .1s lifetimes, .2s frequencies, and a .1 difference in sync between them (so they alternate).

To see my lightning in action, check out the level in my sig or watch this video. The lightning happens at about 2:11 and again at 2:55

When my BF wanted lightning bolts for his level, I used purple glass, picked the six-pointed star and used the edit tool to turn the star into bolts. The bolts were stamped into the wall and background, then electified. He uses the bolts in his levels now but the best one to see what I'm talking about is his level, Big Brother Is Watching You. He is terrybarracuda btw.2010-06-26 20:43:00
