What's your opinion on manga?

Archive: 53 posts

I enjoy reading it much at times and sometimes I absolutely hate it.
I like it it much more then I "hate" it, but some of the stupid manga cliches really get on my nerves from time to time (for instance the because of my friends thing).

The ones that I love reading are:
One Piece, Beelzebub, Full Metal Alchemist (ended), Fairy Tail, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi (it gets just ridiculously echhi after some time), Hunter x Hunter (and it's on hiatus again), Bakuman and so on...

So what do you think of manga? (and anime if you will)

Oh well, I love mangas.
I must say that lately there aren't a lot of good mangas, but well, it happens.

At the time my current top 3 is:
B A S T A R D!!, by Kazushi Hagiwara; the most epic and over the top manga ever. It's not famous today, since it's a series that started way back in 1988.
Both the story and the art are sick, and get better and better.
I helped to scanlate it until issue n?8 with the Dead Sea Scan group under the nick of Daelthasaar. Some guys @ Narutofan.com have picked up our work and I think they have released issue n?26.
The mangaka is very slow and suffers from a rare case of diabetes and has suffered at least a heart attack, but his work is priceless.

Then there's One Piece that is a masterpiece that everyone should read, even people that are not into manga.

The third is Air Gear, by Ogure Ito, or Oh! Great.
The manga is about a guy that start to love a special kind of rollerskates, called Air Gear, but this is only the premise, since the story goes completely nuts.
Again Oh! Great is maybe the second most talented artist (behind his highness Hagiwara) and the panels are absolutely amazing!

Dont get me wrong, i LOVE a good anime and manga but the only thing that repells me from them is the tard fan group that comes with them, i mean its cool if you collect stuff from the show, i used to collect Naruto headbands cuz i thought they looked neat, put it on once for an anime convention but that was the only thing anime related on me lol, but i mean if you go to overboard and quote the show/game/manga over and over and name yourself a person from that show? lay off of the stuff for a while, ya know what i mean? and also this wasnt directed to anyone in specific xD2010-06-21 23:01:00

Rurouni Kenshin was fantastic, I thought, I own a large majority of the books. Everything else though... uhh. It all feels the same.

I like FLCL and stuff like it. It's different and weird, perfectly hipster enough for me

Kenshin is great stuff, but it's a bit old...
There was great stuff like Hokuto No Ken, Jo-Jo Bizarre Adventures, Saint Seiya back in the days.

I should also mension Blade Of The Immortal and Vagabond for all the samurai fans.

Well the drawing atillw was inspired by a mangaka's style, so i guess it counts too.

As for my opinion on anime manga...wel its a but obvious, no?

<_< *looks at avi.* v_v *looks at sig.*

About some good anime/ mangas, i'll post some later, i'm thinking of too many right now.

I think it's pretty obvious that I like manga, considering I write my own ^_^. I've been reading manga since I was in probably 8th or 9th grade. Urusei Yatsura is my favorite, followed closely by Ranma 1/2 and Dr. Slump. I also really like Maison Ikkoku and pretty much anything else that Rumiko Takahashi has done. Oh, and Kodomo No Omocha and Marmalade Boy, and Fushigi Yuugi! Argh! All right, I like a lot of manga! ^_^2010-06-22 16:16:00

omg i quit watching Inuyasha after the fisrt season ._. it just turned into "INUYASHA HALP" -saves kagome-, next episode "INUYASHA HALP" -saves kagome- the rest was sorta filler or lame action, IMO

I do read a bit of it, too! Mostly seinen, though (I believe seinen meant adult stuff or something. It sure it's more mature) My favorite are:

1-MONSTER (the story is very touching while slightly dark)
2-Planetes (again, a very touching manga, portraying very human characters)
3-Vinland Saga (by the same author as planetes. Weirldy, a story about Vikings. It's looking very promising, and the plot has very unexpected twists)
4-Full metal alchemist (I have to admit that I dont like how it looks -realism ftw- but it yields an incredibly complicated political story)
5-Gantz (Ugh... plain disturbing and weird!)
6-Death Note (talk about an engaging story!)

Monster indeed is a very interesting one, may nt have a lot of action, but that does not reduce its value of interest at all.
Fullmetal Alchemist - (Fullmetal's written together btw, not really important, just thought i'd tell ya just in case. ) Its a really good one, one of the "must watch/ read" of the anime and manga world, to bad manga already ended and anime's soon to follow )

Gantz - Yes you got it right, one of the most if not the most disturbing anime i've seen...but still you gotta admit in a ay its pretty good (the anime ends akwardly tho, the manga's better)

Death Note also a good one, at least the 1st half, the latter half with Near and Mello is just kinda ugh...like you just watch/ read it to see what happens to ligh, but its pretty boring...

^Speaking of which, did anyone else notice how it seems both Bleach and Naruto are reaching their final arcs?
Moost top bad guys dead, good guys' forces weakened/ diminished, explanations for most stuff explained...

I wonder what's gonna happen after Bleach and Naruto are over...?

With Fullmetal done as well, most of the really good-everyone's-must-see long time series that everyone knows are gonna be gone... T_T
I wonder what's gonna happen afterwards, will Tite and Naruto's authors make another long time series?
Will other already existing series make it into the long time memorables?
Or we will just have a really lbig amount of small time (20 - 30 eps) really good series bombarding us?

Oh man, i really don't want those 2 to end, even if its just fillers, those have lasted for years...is as if they cancelled Pokemon all of a suddend, how would that one person that still watches it would react?!

Do keep in mind i said it "seems" they're approaching the end.
Naruto AT LEAST has this arc and 2 more arcs left, so its probably one more year of Naruto "Manga" plus the time the anime catches up which may take longer for any filler arcs they decide to place in the way.

Bleach also still has about a year of anime, but the manga seems to have a couple of months left.
Yet again they still haven't really introduced or mad much talk of "Squad Zero" or "The Royal Guard" along with stuff about the "king" so maybe that'll enlongate it, unless of course Aizen or onyone else makes and uses the key and they reach that place with the king and stuff.
I mean they are teaching Ichigo the "final" getsuga tenshou (cheesy anyone? ) but well, even if its the final, they will make aonther "stronger power" if the need arises...
So yeah, it may not be over yet Slayer.

God I hope that they finally cancel Pokemon! I hate that show... (love the game).

@Silverleon: Well I think that Bleach is going to end before Naruto ( I really don't like Bleach). When they're gone (talking bout the manga) there will still be One Piece (that's bound to go on for a couple of years) and some mildly popular ones like History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Bakuman, Beelzebub & Fairy Tale will become really popular.

And the creator of FMA has already plans for another series, so we can expect something great from him/her in a couple of months!

And still there are a lot of good mangas in the making (I hope ), so II'm looking forward to the future of the manga!

Here it's percieved (pretty accurately) as a little kid's kinda thing, ranked below Saturday morning cartoons in terms of artistic merit. Again, pretty accurate, in general. Don't kill me.

I went to a convention once in Baltimore (my friend took me), I will never ever return, the culture is something I am very happy not associating with.

Lol, monstahr, I was at that convention in baltimore a few times, too. I'm not like the people in that culture. It sorta scared me a little bit, too. I used to sell comics at that convention and show my animations.

I guess I agree with you to a degree. When they bring manga here and put it on television, it loses something with the american voice acting. But I've seen a lot of manga that is definitely not for kids. lol. I've also seen some very artistic anime/manga. Anything done by miyazaki is leaps and bounds better than "saturday morning cartoons" ... just watch something like Princess Mononoke and you'll see what i mean. ^_^

I'm absolutely not joking - it's pretty graphic. Lol. Here's the intro -

It's really scary. I'd actually advise not watching it. Oh, and reading the above comments, this pretty much proves anime/manga is not just for kids.

LOL, that's what I thought.
I think that there's an insane competition between American comics and mangas.
And I must say, that as a foreigner I always perceive that the average US resident has a kind of preclusion towards non US products.

I read a lot of American comics in original language (that's how I start to learn English) when I was a kid: DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, and, while there were sure masterpieces, like Chris Claremont's X-Men or the Dark Knight by Miller, I found that most of the stories are rather empty of significance and they're dragged forever.
So I would put easily stuff like SpiderMan at the same level of Naruto.
Unfortunately mainstream and popularity are almost never a synonimus of quality.

Downplaying the manga culture and associating it to the Otaku Fancons (made for non-Japanese people) , is a great disservice to the Japanese culture as a whole, something that in a certain way, in other forums and discussions I perceived almost racist.
Manga has a really old artistic story, much more than any form of "drawn story" of other Countries, being derived directy from art.
The first form of mangas (that roughly means animated images) are from the end of the 18th century (1976 if I remember correctly), and even one of the greatest Japanese artist, Hokusai, used that form of art in the "Hokusai Manga" in 1814.
Those are considered forms of art, just like literature and at University you study them along the other form of arts.

In every Japanese metro, before the advent of cell-phones and portable gaming devices, everyone was reading a manga in Japan, since the market offers such a great amount and choice of themes for every age and taste.

That's incredible that only stuff like Shounen (for kids) and hentai (adult pervert material) have penetrated the US market defining a certain kind of conception, while Shoujo (for girls), Seinen (for adult males) and Josei (for adult females) have remained a niche product.

As kappa said, most of the Seinen are really much more intense and deep than 95% of the average American comic.
Berserk, Garasu no Kamen, Blade Of The Immortal, Vagabond, DevilMan, Real, 20th Century Boys, B A S T A R D!!, Cesare, JoJo is stuff of an incredible depth.
I really invite skeptics to have a closer look to the art form and not only to a kind of culture that we Westerners only try to mimic awkwardly.

Really, except Full Metal Alchemist, One Piece, Hunter X Hunter and old Rumiko Takahashi's stuff, I only read about a lot of mainstream stuff that lacks quality, while there's lot of manga treasures to be find and read.

And please read Manga instead of watching Anime

Yeah, I read much more manga than I watch anime. I used to watch Ranma way back when, but it got to a point where they were just making stuff up and not following Rumiko Takahashi's stories anymore. I guess she wasn't writing fast enough for them and the TV stations just wanted to put episodes out.

Manga is an artform, though. Some of the stories that are presented are very wonderful. Newer manga seems to drag on for a loooooooooong time, though, and that sorta makes me sad. I feel like Naruto will never end, lol. Even though I know it is going to. Ranma 1/2 was 36 volumes, I think. I thought that was really long, but then Inuyasha was something like 51 volumes? Something like that. Maybe even longer. lol.

Anyway, I definitely recommend some of the older stuff if anyone wants to see manga as an artform. Particularly something like Phoenix by osamu tezuka, or Fushigi Yuugi ... Fushigi Yuugi's not super old, but it's quite good.

The Clubbed to death angel dokura chan? Yes...seen it all, lol, it's pretty terrifying.

I like manga, but I'd rather watch the anime and then have my best mate who can't be bothered to wait for the animes to fill me in on the bits that get missed out.

I follow Shippuuden from narutoget.com, the hellsing OVA's when they get released, I used to watch bleach but I got bored because of how dragon ball z it became.
I also love Death note and Code Geass. I'm sure there's more, but these ones off the top of my head.

I did like DBZ back in the day, but I was a LOT younger then, when it was on at 4pm every day on cartoon network

Srry dude, Dragon Ball and Pokemon yes those are 100% anime, but Avatar isn't, it was made in the U.S. animated by a Korean animation studio, so not much "Anime" in there.

(In here i'm reffereing the term anime as "japanese animation btw" you may have another term for anime, but as far as japanese animation goes, Avatar is not one of them.)

I actually bought a POKEMON manga, but that's only because Pokemon is awesome.

Anyway, I don't think it's necessarily closed-minded to find manga...uncomfortable. I don't know about the manga, but even Dragon Ball, which is supposed to be a kid's show, is full of tons of uncomfortable and honestly unfunny sexual jokes, like when Bulma tried to lure out Oolong with panties. I've seen other things like Full Metal Alchemist and Inuyasha before, and they were just too cheesy. They seemed over-dramatic.

It's not like I don't like manga just because it's Japanese, though I'm sure cultural differences are a part of it, but the manga/anime scene is just boring and generally uncomfortable to me. A lot of the things I've seen from manga/anime have been either trying too hard to be funny that they're painful to experience or they're laughably serious and trying way too hard to be dark and edgy. If you could turn me on to something that would make me change my mind, then I'd check it out.

Anyway, I like Animal Crossing so you saying that I don't like something because it's Japanese is WRONG!

Just dodging around this 'heated discussion', who here has seen Yakitate!! Japan ???

I effing love this show. I believe this show was a manga first then an anime, and that the manga lives on past the series by a whole arc, but I do feel that this one is best viewed as an anime to really convey the humor. It's humor is one part silly and two parts perfectly executed parodies of other media. It's a hard show to describe without making it sound lame, so i'll put it up to you guys to research it, but it's definatly worth it!

whoa whoa whoa
hey.
that's not very nice.
i guess i may judge it unfairly because i now associate it with pink-haired neckbearded monsters soliciting me for 'free hugs' and shouting 'kawaii'

**** you, this ain't free.

How can you be the only one that over reacted to what I said?
calm down, since I didn't want to offend you, unless you consider yourself a racist.
Still, you're perceiving only the mainstream and most dumb part of the phenomenon as the whole phenomenon.
Yeah, they have kawaai stuff, that I don't see less silly than people that wears hosepants under their everyday costumes.
But I know that American comics are not only SpiderMan, but even Sin City.
So, what I ask is a bit of respect for what you don't know.

@awesomemans
I love mangas, but I couldn't read Pokemon for the whole gold of the world.
I understand what you say about sexual references.
In a certain way, they're worse than you think, since they're called Fan Service, and they're there since they boost the sales.
Like showin a nipple of Angelina Jolie in a movie, there's people that would go to the cinema just to watch it.
The world is much smaller than we used to see it, and even with cultural difference, mankind is really used to do the same things just everywhere.
I really recommend you, and everyone else, to read One Piece.

Oh i've seen that show, really funny!

I liked the arc with Pierrot and the king and all that (i forgot the name of the competition since i saw it like a year or more ago) the most i think, the first arc was still prett funny, but the last one when they're in that show, Japan 9 or something like that, that one was meh...
I pretty much only watched that one to see how the series ended.

Still pretty good series tho!

And to you guys discussing who knows what about U.S. and Japan or whatever, give it a res, its just opinions, like awewsomemans comment about he thinks animes/ maga "trying too hard to be funny that they're painful to experience or they're laughably serious and trying way too hard to be dark and edgy" its JUST an opinion, i think the same thing about most U.S. shows, does that mean everyone has to agree with either of our opinions?
Not at all, we're just placing them out there, if you like them good, if not, then just skip to the next post.
I mean we have differentpeople from different countries on this thread, of course we're gonna think differently!

So just relax, agree to dissagree, agree to like anime/ manga, and enjoy the thread and its reccomendations.

i wasn't meaning to imply all fans are like that, just the convention was absolutely terrifying. and that's probably why i perceive it like i do. the american convention. im not racist. i actually am well-acquainted with the manga genre. i was really into it 8th grade and freshman year, and i have some friends who still are.

Perhaps I'm just simple, but...

I like Manga because it entertains me. (Even the cliched ones ;P) I don't read it just because its Japanese. I read them, simply because they are entertaining stories. Is that not why we read books? And you shouldn't skip an anime/manga just because it's popular. I did that with FMA for a long time, and learned later (as in, last week) that it was an amazing series I should've read earlier.

As for my favorites, I love Ruroni Kenshin, Rave Master, Real Bout High School (That's a rare one and my first ever manga) Whistle!, Full Metal Alchemist....There's probably more, but I cant think of them.
