Responding to help

Archive: 6 posts

I dont know if this post belongs here, if its not, mods feel free to move it, but i have noticed that a couple of times when anyone has asked a question about LBP and its a kinda easy fix, people wont post to help. there is MANY of you guys that do post back, its just i notice that, if someone posts one post itll mak the difference between makin a mech, or a small car with bad centered bolts. So if anyone agrees with me, plz try to post on ever question or help needed.. Just wanna help people as much as possible, cause i think thats the point of the "Help!" threads. Thanks!!! 2010-06-20 16:53:00

Not to be rude, but there's a fine line between a few mistakes and an atrocious wall of badly-written text... What are you even talking about?

Are you saying that people aren't answering enough help questions? I disagree.

You once asked:

I have made a mech, that can alk forward backward and with a tilt sensor. i want to give it more traction so when i go over hills it will not fall over. also i dont know how to give it stability in flight. things like balance and weight i can do. Thanks.

...which is about as vague as you can get in a question about bipedal mechs, one of the most complex types of objects in LBP.

Sevhen answered with this:

Obviously the first thing to do is get it as balanced as possible. You'll also want as much of its weight as possible to be toward the bottom. As for traction, you'll probably need to use some sort of tricks. Mine uses dark matter emitters behind the feet (actually the dark matter emits behind the invisible bits that stick up from the feet) to give it traction, but it wasn't as simple as just turning them on. I had to rig logic so that they would only work when the mech was walking in the right direction (so the ones behind the feet only appear when walking forward, and the ones in front only appear when walking back), when it was on the ground, and when it wasn't walking downhill, so I had to feed the tilt sensor, ground sensor, and the forward walking input into and AND gate so that if all the right conditions are met, the dm emitter fires.

You may have success with other methods, though. I didn't explore using rockets for traction very much (and I'm not too optimistic about whether they would succeed). You also might try adding ridges to the mech's feet and the ground so that they can catch on each other. I experimented with that a bit and couldn't get it working so I abandoned it, but you might have better luck.

As for stability in flight: that's a tricky one. I used invisible super floaty toward the top of my mech, though that adds significantly to drag, which can actually destabilize it if it gets moving pretty fast. During jumps, an emitter fires out an invisible superfloaty "parachute" that's wrapped around the main superfloaty part to give additional lift.

If you're not planning on have the mech emittable thoughout the level, you may want to give some thought to using a floaty rail system (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24072-Floaty-Rail-Stability-System-%28for-mechs-ships-sharks-bombs-whatever!%29&highlight=floaty+rail) to give you near perfect balance.

...There are a lot of helpful people here who answer all kinds of questions.

thats not what i meant. ive been in forums where half of what was said was not answered to. I thought it was amazing that Sehven actually replyed to my post. all i wanna do is keep LBPC the way it is or even better. i dont mean any offence. Also the help that Sehven gave me, actually started the construction of my mech, your theck and thack sublayer guide helped my MAKE the mech. I just wanna take LBPC as close to perfection as i can, with the help of others. so i apologise for any offence.2010-06-21 20:34:00

What are you even talking about?

I think what he means is that the sorts of questions which get asked again and again don't always get answered on subsequent occasions, although having looked through a few pages of the Help! forums, I'm not sure this is particularly accurate.

The threads which get zero replies are generally one of:-

Asking for too much help, e.g. "I want the Create trophy, but I'm too lazy to build a level - will someone do it for me?"
Something which no-one can really help with, and ought to be asked of Sony customer services, e.g. "When I start LBP, I get 'Error 123456789ABCDEF: your brain is made of cheese.' What do I do?"
So unclear that the only replies they'd get would be "WTF are you on about?", e.g. "I r teh plrtz0rz w00t w00t?"

Everything else generally gets at least one reply, although not necessarily a useful one.
