What makes you like the music you like?

Archive: 25 posts

Ok, rather than my normal approach of mocking everything i dislike, ie most things that aren't metal, hard rock or prog, this shall be open to all genres.

What specifically do you like about whatever music you listen to? I'm just interested, because i was wondering to myself why a large proportion of people dislike Metal, and complain about the screaming. To me, screaming is a raw form and expression of emotion, however, looking at it from someone else's perspective, i can see how it may not fit into your idea of 'music'.

For me, i was drawn to Metal through a love of guitar, i started listening to it after hearing Hand of Blood on the NFS: Wanted soundtrack... I hated the screaming, but i loved the guitar. And that led me to go and buy the BFMV album (The Poison) From there, i started learning guitar, and began listening to other metal bands. In my opinion, Metal guitarists (in most cases) are the most technically skilled of all guitarists, although i accept jazz and flamenco can be pretty tricky too. I would say i was drawn to metal over flamenco, for example, because of the 'heaviness' of the music, again, this is something that some people don't enjoy. So by listening to the music for the guitar, i subjected myself to hours of screaming, albeit mixed with clean vocals too.

Over time, i became accustomed to the screaming, and eventually grew to love it, to the point where i now see it, as i mentioned earlier, as a raw display of emotion, rather then incoherent noise (speaking of which, some people are able to scream while at the same time giving amazing clarity to what they say) but to people who only hear it every so often, it is just... noise...

Hard Rock, in a similar way, i love the guitars. It is not as heavy though, so i tend to listen to is for something a bit more 'relaxed'. Bands like Alter Bridge, for example, have amazing guitar, courtesy of Mark tremonti, and yet the vocals are always clean, and a lot of the songs are slower, and not as heavy.

As for prog, i love things like Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, BTBAM and Mastodon, all of which i class as prog, albeit from different subgenres. I'm not sure exactly what attracts me to prog, but i love the complexity of Mastodon and BTBAM, the apparent simplicity in some Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater... are just epic.

In the same way as i couldn't understand why no one liked screaming, i can't understand why people do like rap. As far as i can tell, it is a computerized beat with someone talking over it at a reasonable pace, and i don't get anything from it, i just can't enjoy it. Same for dubstep, and dance, and all that kind of music, i just can't work out the appeal of it, and that is the reason for this thread.

So, why do you like what you like?

I like rock music because of the stick it to the man mentality.

I also dislike the majority of rap. The countless new songs on the radio with the synth voice (I call it the robot voice ) annoys me to no end.
However there are a few nice gateway-rap songs, for example some tracks by the Gorillaz which I don't hate at all.

I like gloomy, miserable music because I find it comforting. Happy music just irritates me beyond belief. Especially all that egotistic, self-aggrandising trash in the charts these days, where the lyrical message usually amounts to "everybody take a look at me....I'm so famous, I'm so rich, I'm so sexy and everybody wants to be me because I'm better than everyone else".

Here's a small example of the kind of vapid horse dung that I'm talking about...

I've been thinking about this myself too recently.

I listen to Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal, Death Metal and some Hard Rock. Bands like Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, After the Burial, Meshuggah, etc are what I'm listening to these days. I listen to these bands mostly because of the sheer awesomeness of the riffs, the melodies and the originality. Complexity intrigues me in music, and technicality is found all over the place in BTBAM and ATB. Opeth has a very jazzy feel, which I love when mashed delicately with metal. The variety of melodies and riffs that the bands I listen to provide are what keep me listening.

As for screaming... I can easily tell that it's not something that 'mainstream' people can see themselves liking. It doesn't help with all the stereotypes of Metal being 'the devil's music'. Screaming is something very different from rapping or clean vocals, and in most cases is an acquired taste. I know for certain that I didn't like screaming at first, but I forced myself to listen to many songs that have it, and eventually I came to like it.

Despite my love for Metal and it's more technical sub-genres, I try to appreciate all genres. I've listened to a number of songs by Deadmau5 that I can say I like. Also, there are certain Kid Cudi songs that I very much appreciate. Of course, it's hard to be open to all music. I do try my best to give everything a listen from different perspectives, and can safely say that I do appreciate most types of music. There is, however, a very different meaning in the words/phrases "appreciate" and "listen to". Appreciating music can mean thinking it's okay, and respecting the musician/artist whereas listening to music means you enjoy it.

In my opinion, people look for different things in music (well that's kind of obvious lol). I look for technicality, original melodies, etc whereas someone that listens to rap (this is not necessarily true, just making an assumption) might look for lyrics that suit certain situations in their life or 'emotional' songs that can really motivate you.

Uhh... yeah. /end rant

EDIT: One more thing... this song houses some screaming, clean vocals a bluesy type solo and very original riffs. I suggest people listen to it with an open mind.

Your wondering why techno? well im pretty active and sometimes techno (depending which) makes you hyper, and i LOVE that feeling, though i dont listen to happy techno XD i hate it but...

For example check out The Qemists Perfect High, its so Fast and crazy and thats what i mean, though i also sometimes like to hear some relaxing Trance to just calm down idk haha

Happy, upbeat stuff. Usually some kind of big band sound. Loudness is good, but not like metal loud. Like lo fi, party loud.2010-06-20 16:43:00

My favourite bands are Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, and James. I think that sums up my music taste pretty well. I have an absolutely massive passion for Arctic Moneys. They easily have the greatest lyricist of my generation and the probably the best drummer too.

Actually, seeing as guys are into far heavier music, I'd be interested in what you think their latest much darker and heavier direction:

Pretty Visitors: (watch the drumming in that and you will not disagree with me.2:30 onwards gets pretty heavy (comparatively speaking) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q9Y0sDRpRM

Dance Little Liar (probably my favourite AM song. the way it builds up is intense. 4:00 onwards is absolutely immense): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQwS7-7Pjr0

Fright Lined Dining Room (bside): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCnkbwnMU10

Catapult: (bside)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vrD3WvoiiY

I doubt you heavy guys would like this even a little bit, but for the most beautiful cover (everyone else should listen to this!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WEAdwmqREk

Okay, that's enough pimping out my favourite band

jack, I absolutely LOVE james. I'm pretty sure that Sit Down is one of my top ten favorite songs of all time. ^__^

I am a fan of soul asylum, too, mostly their older stuff. To get more specific, the song Crashing Down. There's something about their music and lyrics that speak to me. Got me through some tough times. My thing is: if I can't identify to the lyrics, I probably won't like the song. Crashing Down has a ghost in it and even a crystal cave... So it's all about the imagery for me and the sort of emotion that thing song causes in me.

I have a very open mind on music. I listen to country, rap, hip-hop, old school, classical, instrumental, etc.

But the main music I listen to is Rock and the many variations of it. I first started to listen to Rock because of my older brother, who was a big Rap/Rock fan; and by Rap I mean the old school type like Wu-Tang Clan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isumZjs3dKA) and Ghostface Killah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPKJZJITZHw) listened to Rock everywhere he'd go, but sometimes he'd through in some rap and I grew to like it. Rock to me has some amazing songs and lyrics sometimes, rap has awesome beats and the lyrics end up getting stuck in your head. But also everyone is entitled to their opinion on what music they like, My opinion is that every type of music is 100x waaay better than the crap they play on the radio, (Lil Wayne and every other robot voice 'Rapper&apos there are times in which i like those artists though, [Adult Swim] made a funny cartoon with a big group of famous rappers from now and back then called Freaknik: The Musical (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2CQ7tKDEd8), I love that cartoon because it made me laugh and I admit some of the songs were really catchy and I listened to them non stop for a while. But to me new day rap is the same old thing in every song (Drank, Bewbs, Secks, and Dumb lyrics). If they actually RAPPED then i would listen to it, it also makes me sad that Snoop Dogg went from good rapper to Lil' Wayne Status...But thats just me ranting right? Also the type of music i currently like is in my sig if your interested :kz:

I'm quite a big fan of some Metaly-rocky type things, especially RED, Sonata Arctica, Evenesance and Fireflight.

But I'm also big into (don't laugh) musicals and (believe it or not) Disney!! ^_^

Internet high five, Freaknik: The Musical is the best thing ever.

I listen to music that I like. That's the clearest explanation I can think of.

I listen to metal and rock. Mostly metal. I'm big into most subgenres of metal, but right now I'm huge into the melodic death metal scene. A lot of people think "melodic" and "death metal" don't go together, but I think they haven't really listened to it.

Anyway, I started out way back in the day on rock and stuff like Iron Maiden, thanks to my dad. Around 8th grade, I started actually caring about what I listened to and bought an Underoath CD. It was my first experience with metal, though back then I just called it "screamo." How lame was that? =p I didn't like the screaming at first, and said I was listening to it because it was the only kind of music where I could find actually good musicianship, which was true. I grew to like it over time, though. Then I got into bands like Avenged Sevenfold and System of a Down, which really catapulted me into metal. Somewhere along the line, I realised a crapton of great music comes from the Scandinavian peninsula, and found bands like Kalmah, Amon Amarth, and Dark Tranquility.

Like I said above, I like metal because I can appreciate the musical talent it takes to make it happen. Listening to stuff on the radio, there's no talent there (IMO!!!), it's mostly made on a computer with some lame vocals slapped on top. I mean, I could do that. Metal takes actual time and effort, though. Also, bands like Dark Tranquility have a quality about them that just makes them easy to listen to. Everything flows together nicely and creates a sound you could never hear anywhere else. Like so: (Listen with an open mind, please. =D)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3F1W8HJLV5s&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3F1W8HJLV5s&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

To me, songs like that epitomize why I love metal. I guess, if you get it, no explanation is needed, and if you don't, no explanation will do.

I used to enjoy rock more than I do now, but eventually I grew bored of it, since the guitars and voices got to me. It's good, but I don't like it. I like the abstract dance music because it's taking musical equipment and making something new out of it, so no two songs are the same. I like it because there's always at least 30 songs to fit my mood of the moment, and it's interesting to see how people express themselves through sounds. Most of the songs are arranged beyond human comprehension, which I enjoy because being a composer myself, I'm always trying to figure out the tricks used in them, so the music keeps me 100% occupied.

I think my impression of metal was ruined after the release of guitar hero, and the large groups of 12 year olds walking around with Iron Maiden t shirts just made me sick to my stomach XD

I still like some rock though; mainly bands like UNKLE and Autolux, and 80's one hit wonders. I don't enjoy rap anymore either, but I love acid hip hop, like Dj Shadow, Flying Lotus, Exile, Herbaliser, Mr Scruff, Dj Krush [not because of LBP], Coldcut, Dj Vadim, Dj Spooky, Portishead, Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack, etc.

This is an example of a song I'd like; it's emotional, builds up, changes, and has plenty of production value yet keeps the same rhythm going throughout. Anyone who makes music can only imagine how much talent it takes to make something like this XD It's one of my favorite songs, EVAHH!!111

I really don't know exactly what kind of music I like. My favorite bands are the alternative/experimental rock bands Portugal. The Man, iForward, Russia!, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Minus The Bear, Muse (to an extent), and some post-rock like GSY!BE. I will tolerate some electronic music, such as Crystal Castles, but my favorite has got to be The Polish Ambassador.2010-06-25 05:50:00

Ungreth, I thought I could only listen to sad music too. That was, until I started listening to Coheed and Cambria. Seriously, even their cheesiest pop-rock songs are awesome.

I like rock, punk, pop....actually, I like anything. Anything can sound good at any time (You know there's such a thing as Rock Opera right?) The reason, is not just how the guitarist sounds, but the combination of sounds that comes together to make a symphony of wonder for my ears. Good music to me is catchy, and sometimes makes me think. I actually apply music to every day situations. I even have a theme song xP. I also like to sing (Not in public), so I also prefer music with good singers for that reason.

I like music for many reasons, really. Hard to list them all. I like Tokio Hotel because of their "depressing yet there is hope" attitude in all of their songs. It helps me get through tough times in life, and is just generally good to listen to.

I feel like I kinda went everywhere with that post, but that's all I can think of right now XD

First, kudos to Alex for having started (for once) a cool thread

I grown up as a kid listening a lot of classical music, and I always loved the old Ludwig Van, or his majesty, severity and his mood.
Music is something that grabs me internally.
It holds tight my bowels, rocks my heart and makes my mind fly away.
It's all about emotions, so the harder it can strike me, with the most ample range of feelings, the more I love it.
I like when music gives me goosebumbs, and I love when I feel annhilitaed and overwhelmed by it, when it makes me feel just a like a little dot in the Universe.
So, that's obvious that I would be completely seduced by Heavy Metal, when I was 8 years old with Iron Maiden's Powerslave.
I started to play guitar when I was 13, so my interest got shifted even towards technical stuff, that like Alex said is omnipresent in Metal.
Also, Metal is pure feeling, almost always written not for money but for passion.

An example of one of my favourite song ever!
This is a very EPIC song, based on M.Zimmer Bradley vision of the Iliad!

I tend to basically go for anything that conjures up really strong emotions in me. I absolutely love wallowing in really depressing tunes or tearing round the house to some loud angry stuff.

It's generally old stuff too. Can't be doing with today's crap.

I listen to alot of instrumental guitar music as well as rock and metal, the reason I love the instrumental guitar music is probably because I play guitar myself and it inspires me

Mastodon is now my favorite band, they are awesome no matter way you look at it.

Every album is unique (element wise) and cleanly written.

I used to listen to rap/pop, but now I feel sorta stupid for liking it. All it is, is women, sex, drugs, alcohol (not saying some rock isn't like that).

I have grown to appreciate the growl in heavy metal music, it sounds awesome!

So, thats the way I look at it.

I tend to be drawn in to very abstract music. Usually this ends up being experimental metal like Mastodon, Cynic, Genghis Tron, iwrestledabearonce, and Atheist. Sometimes, though, it leads to random stuff like Mahavishnu Orchestra (John MacLaughlin FTW).2010-07-03 06:52:00
