Facility A24 - Planning and Brainstorming

Archive: 3 posts

So just in case you haven't notcied the couple of posts I've scattered around, I'm back. It seems a long time since I published The Crate Escape back in january, and somehow bribed my way into community spotlight episode 32, so I don't imagine many people will remember me, but I'm back. I regret going away in the first place, but the disadvantage of Getting a New Leather Chair and HD TV for my birthday is that My PS3 was no longer close enough to plug into the internet, and our wireless is terrible and tries to kill the PS3 if you connect. Thus, I lost the ability to play LBP online, and with it, some of my enjoyment of the game.
However, I have recently discovered that the Cable IS in fact long enough, so I'm back to creating!
This actually started as an idea for a Techdemo. After recieving my July copy of Top Gear Magaizine, I decided it would be cool to recreate the Mercedes Hexawheel concept in LBP. I didn't get around to starting it, as I'm away from my PS3 until sunday . I then saw Security Breach by javi haguse, and though, for reasons mentioned above, I haven't played it yet, i've seen the trailer, and fallen in love with that crane scene. I also remembered showing a friend Rtm223's excellent Subterranean Setbacks level earlier in the week, and a desire to try out the 3D Glitch, Compression tool and Water before LBP2 hit. I also marvelled at Croissantbuncake's miniaturization skills.
The an Idea hit me: What If I could combine all 4 of these into one epic level, attemping to max out every thermo, achieve the Logic-mastery and intergration of Rtm, the visual and physics mastery of Javi and them contraption mastery of Croissantbuncake, all in one epic level?
But where would I set my masterpiece? The answer came in the form of GCSE Chemistry. We've just finished a module on Ionic Bonding and Electrolysis, and I remember the lesson we did on the Inert gasses, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon and Ununoctium (I think). I've always been fascinated by Neon, and the idea of generating energy by forcing each atom to swap 8 electrons with the next. It seemed the perfect fuel, and I decided an extraction facility would be the perfect setting for my level.
The level will be set on a Mars-like planet with an atmosphere rich in neon. You have to Investigate a Neon mining outpost that's fallen into disrepair, and assess is suitability for refurbishment. Sounds simple, but you aren't the only one interested in Facility A24...
Below, I have a list of everything I'm hoping to include. It'll start fairly empty and grow as I think of more ideas, so If you're interested, make sure to check back regularlyish!

Neon Mining Facility
Transport based on Mercedes Hexawheel
Huge mining 'crane' is hit by missile and collapses (sorry Javi )
Platforming of medium difficulty for better playability
Very run-down, lots of rust and collapsing railings etc. with plenty of sound effects.
Mining equipment in typicalish Yellowish coulours, with plenty of grime and rust.
Maybe huge boss battle against corrupted mining equipment?
Possible labarynthine (sp?) tunnels below surface
Large neon tanks in fairly pristine condition until destroyed, liquid neon pours out and creates obstacle(s)
Chase scene, Hexawheel-vehicle chased by alien beast/vehicle, lots of jumps and dynamic driving, possible showcase of Hexawheel abilities in climb of some sort at end.

Vine srings out ground and tries to splat you
Blow up yellow barrels for extra points
Platforming: Ice cold neon streaming from floor, jump through when it stops
Platforming: climb up a cliff, push rock off to enable jump below.
Want about 12 secrets
Platforming: creaking walkway acts like bounce pad for higher jump.

Want some physics-based platforming, maybe stuff collapsing to create walkways or a pipe burst and starts spraying neon and you jump on it and fly into the air
Lots of bits of Chain (winch) hanging off things for a derelict look
No rope on level, and most pistons hidden - Lots of winches
Want to use rods and springs to create a detailed (non-usable) buggy.
May not max matierials thermo
Possible neon sign if I can get a good one working
Run along conveyer, hit switch, have to go back other way but neon tanks which can be stood on and flaming rubble etc which can't be stood on coming towards you
Puzzle: remove gunge from vent using popit, air starts flowing, rising water/neon level stops
Some backtracking, maybe multipath

Want to intergrate escalator, conveyers and maybe Neon-fall of some sort into level.
Liquid Neon freezes metal, makes it brittle, drop something heavy to shatter metal and progress
Aliens chase you in giant tank - you're in Hexawheel, drive along, it shoots at you, lots of explosions and falling rocks, jump over rope bridge, hexawheel crashes into next cliff face, struggles to climb up, tank falls through, keeps following, you keep driving, thinking it's destroyed, then it explodes from the ground, smashes rear end off Hexawheel, you go up a ramp, fly over a layer glitched chasm, crash on other side, tanks falls down chasm then you push a trailer of propane tanks off, firey explosion below but mostly just a lighting effect because you can't see.
Maybe on last one, depends on thermo, still want decent amount of platforming etc.
When 'crane collapses, you end up underground, have to get to surface, there's a lift but it's broken, you drag a fuel tank or something on a trailer underneath then blow it up, huge explosion, propels lift to surface!
Platfoming: jump one way over normal holes, pull a switch, something happens, go back, but danger in holes now.
Running along walkway, something explodes, it starts collapsing behind you, have to run quickly, mild obstacles, maybe set reset & demitter so it respawns if you die, maybe it only colapses when you gone past, maybe a combination of the two.
Quite dark at first, but once you get generator of some sort up and running, goes very bright, lots of spotlights.
Once it's lit up, you try to get back to Launchpad, but you get attacked, fall through floor, maybe level ends, maybe you keep going depending on thermo.
Possible dramatic title, but probably not for thermo.

You can see a picture of the Hexawheel here: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-hexawheel-concept-by-siyamak-rouhi-dehkordi/full/#3000239
Any other ideas you have, please post away.
Edit: Updated with more ideas! Please post people! . I need as many ideas as I can get if this is to be a proper 'send-off' for LBP in preperation for LBP2.
Edit 2: Updated again, a few more ideas.
Edit 3:few more ideas. Looks like noone want to reply until I gett some pics up later today lol.

Ooh! That hexawheel looks really cool and your idea is amazing and pictures would be nice. The neon facility on mars setting rocks and so does all the ideas. Unfortunately, if you really want this all it'll have to be over one level I think. I'm guessing maybe a three part series at least. I do have a question. Are all these ideas in order or are they in a random order?2010-06-22 14:21:00

They're in the order I had them . I hope to put some pics up later today or tommorow. Mostly been working on concepts so far, so not a whole lot to show. I've built a staircase about 3 sacks high and used 4 Permanent switches lol. And another staircase, about 2 sacks high, with 1 perm switch. The thermo will definately be a challenge, but my method of building suits the 'infite' thermo glitch quite well, so if need be I can use that to squeeze a little bit more out of it. I'm not quite sure how gritty I want it yet; on the on one hand, gritty gives lots of opportunties to set up a good atmosphere etc., but on the other hand, Shiny could look more futuristic. I think a mix of both will probably work best, but I'm sofar unsure of what 'ratio' I want to use. Perhaps whoever is that is attacking you has a base neraby, and that can be clean and shiny, while the rest is darker and more atmospheric. Whatever happens, the neon storage tanks and pipes etc will be the cleanest, since Neon doesn't allow for rusting.2010-06-22 15:54:00
