A video of my level from the create jam (2 new videos)

Archive: 61 posts

I had this on my phone, taken at the create jam for my own memory's and use, but seeing as there's videos everywhere now I may as well post it here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu0fPO70fXM

Its only of gameplay, and taken from my phone so the quality is a little bad, but you can get the basic idea. I'll answer questions you have, if any

Thanks Syroc

And heres a montage of some levels from the event

Thanks Donkey Show

Why??? That's the question on everyone's mind. Also, I think the fans would like a brief synopsis of the backstory of this wonderous creation!

lol - love the cows..... I think they're cows.

So what's that material you have on the ground for water?

With the top down thing - is it like three thick and five thin from the bottom up in terms of layers to use?

Well I had my copy of LBP1 in my bag and I offered it to grant, but for some reason his heart was set on playing LBP2... I can't for the life of me understand why

Yes, they are cows, and herding cattle into traffic using a flying saucer whilst avoiding kamikazi bovine pilots, has never been so much fun

Congrats Gruntos!

I'm not sure how playble it actually looks but I will say it looks nothing at all like Little Big Planet! It looks really amazing... even the kitschy swimming pool animated material! So what other animated material are heading to us?
Was Morgana correct in her layer assumption?

It seems easier than ever to make a great looking level in no time... so how about the game mechanic? Did it PLAY as good as it looked in less than 24 hours?

Yeah they're cows Morgana they fly the spitfires to

It's just an animated texture for the water and it uses the normal planes and the improved camera controls.

Why, the water material, of course.

Oh... this was a place for Grant to answer questions? *grumble*

Haha, no problem, I'm off to bed now anyway so the thread will be left while I sleep, answer away

haha if you listen really closely you can hear all my fantastic ideas.

I was the brains behind this level really, I just let Grant build it

Yep, that's how it worked pretty much

You can also hear me say "Highscore my **** at the end, only for you to double the highest with 20 odd thousand points on your next play.

Looks cool! I like how you've used the whole LBP2 thing, great idea.

Yeah, suprising it was built on LBP2!!

Why??? That's the question on everyone's mind. Also, I think the fans would like a brief synopsis of the backstory of this wonderous creation!

Cows, kill. That's basically it, the rest is just an excuse to justify that

I actually thought that when I was creating it Morgana. I have no bad feelings towards Cows, honest.

EDIT: Gravels answer

Yeah less than a day, I went to the hotel for sleep about 5am and returned at 10am or so. I didn't have the amount stamina as some people

I'll leave it to other people to say how playable it was, it could have used a lot more improvement but it was pretty good for the time I had I think, it's testament t how good the new tools are really. Comph, rtm and wex's level needs a good video because that was really well polished

There was a raining effect animated texture, and some moving stars I noticed, but there could have been more. Morgana is correct in the layer assumption, it uses the same as the old LBP.

The game mechanic was the same as Smash TV and geometry wars, one stick to move, the other to shoot in then direction you point it. That's basically it

That looks so fun I love UFO levels.

27 hours isn't as short as it sounds considering they went overnight on this thing. For someone that only has a few hours a day for video games, that easily translates to a week.

Anyway, it still looks like a lot of fun.

How are the cows programmed to run away from the UFO?

Why, the water material, of course.

Oh... this was a place for Grant to answer questions? *grumble*

That is great to hear. If it can be treated like any other material, it sounds like you can emit it and all sorts of things.

Now I have to ask. How much of those 27 hours did you actually spend making your level as opposed to messing around with the tools? xD I mean, if I had the opportunity to create in LBP2 before the release, I would tinker with EVERYTHING before deciding what to do.

Also, once you had your level idea made up, how much time was spent working out the mechanics as opposed to level design (visually)?

We got a few hours to have a play around first, I played after they asked us to build something specific for ages to. I decided on the controls and basic gameplay first, and once i got that working, which didn't take long at all, maybe 3/4 hours I started playing with scenery and the idea struck me. I spent most of the time tweaking little things and adding little details really.

The water acts like any other material yeah, wex made some fantastic looking waterfalls with it by using the material changing tool thingy

The cows have sack tracker switches on them, set to flee, once sack boy hits the radius away they go. The planes have the same set to follow or chase, I can't remember the exact term for it (rtm/comph? lol.).

That's great news! That's actually a great workaround to pourable water because you can just work with a material instead.

Oh I forgot if you could set AI to flee in the first game or not (been a long time since I created). Do you still use AI brains or are the cows working by different means of AI (microchips only or something)?

And yes, I know that you guys were forced to NOT realize platforming based stuff, so I can't wait.

Thanks so much for taking the extra time to answer my questions... I really appreciate it!
Also wanted to reinterate how AWESOME I think it looks... I only questioned the gameplay because in this and especially the other top-down video I saw (press demo 'crashy-bashy) the users don't seem to get anywhere... wasn't insinuating anything... Your tops to me! Cheers.

I can assure you the controls are awesome. It's just that if you don't keep on top of the cows you're pretty much done for

Being the expert B.A.D.A.S.S player that I am (tripled the top score of anyone else I think? ) I am definitely the highest authority on this subject

Also, I noticed how you mentioned the controls on Crashy Bashy, they work in such a way so if you boost into an opponent when they're quite near the sides it's pretty hard for them to recover from. It helps make it more frantic and a lot more fun. If the controls were any more precise no one would ever get killed, they'd just zoom around dodging each other easily (I've messed with the setting of this one so know first hand )

jack reminded me of something I hope Mm does. For some reason, I hope they end up making "scores" less useless and more appealing to play for. Maybe giving people's profiles a ranking/score counter based on their high-scores.2010-06-17 19:44:00

Actually, CCubbage and myself put together something almost identical in concept on LBP1 a few months back, ie: top down gameplay with a ufo shooting lasers at incoming enemies from all directions. I showed him the conceptual prototype, then he took the idea to his workshop and rejigged the mechanics to make something more playable. All that was left to do was for me to create the 3-D background, but I got distracted with other stuff and never got around to it. Shame on me.

And before anyone calls bull on me for stating "I thought of it first", rtm will confirm that he played with the prototype months ago

Sorry for the late replys everyone, i finished work and had a quick detour to the pub

How many hours do you think that took?

I'd say roughly twenty or so, with sleep, distractions, food and cig breaks. It could do with a load more time spending on it, but it shows how good the tools are when you create something that quickly.

Oh okay. I wasn't quite sure if you used those in addition to a brain or something. That's amazing! The less brains, the better I say.

Can you now set materials to dissolve OTHER than the dissolve material? The destroy switch just makes them blow up?

Everything was built out dissolve, due to force of habit (although none of the dissolve was connected to a switch in the end), other than the scenery and the water. The destroy switch can remove any material without destroying what's round it like bombs used to. You get a few options to destroy with it, explode, shrink, grow or vanish if in remember correctly (can someone confirm lol).

I still wound how you created that oh well we just have to wait until LBP 2 comes out.

Also dude do you feel strange affected play LBP 2 then going back to LBP 1

I went on LBP to check plays etc when I got back, but I havnt touched create mode, I'm saving myself and ideas for LBP2. I'm gonna restart Mars Attacks at some point on LBP2 so I can do my original ideas justice (I'm gonna remove the current levels at some point), so no more of those in LBP1.

That looks like.....something I wouldn't be able to do....but I would eventually figure it out in LBP 2...after...days of playing with the new tools

Trust me on this, we didn't have a clue either when we started, and look what we did. The tools are so easy and powerful its mind-blowing.

o how much stuff from Mm did you steal?

Nothing I had To spread my time between create mode and walking to the fridge, I had no time for anything else

Wonderful stuff Grant!

And yes, I know that you guys were forced to NOT realize platforming based stuff, so I can't wait.

There's some great platforming in the story levels, it won't die don't worry, the new tools allow so many possibilities with it. Most of the things I first thought of after the presentation where how to use the tools for puzzles and platforming. We weren't forced to do anything, i think we were all just blown away by, and excited to use the direct control seat. Jack had a fanastic level he showed off, and I cant wait to see what captain cowboy hat does with it. It opens up possibilities for people like me who like to create series, we can mix gameplay up a little. I'm re-creating Mars Attacks for this reason.
