Spyro set-up

Archive: 27 posts

Ok, as some of you may, or may not, know I was working on a Spyro the Dragon series.
Since the announcement of LBP2, I have decided to wait until then to create it.

Here is the point of the thread:
What setup should it have?

Option 1:
Creatinator shooting fire and using swings for gliding.

Option 2:
Creatinator shooting fire and using jump pads for gliding.

Option 3:
Creatinator shooting fire and using low gravity for gliding.

Option 4:
Direct controlled sackbot with an emitter/creatinator (if they can use it) shooting fire with movers on the sackbot to recreate gliding.

Option 5:
Direct controlled vehicle with an emitter shooting fire with flying capabilities to recreate gliding.

I like option 3. The anti-gravity looks like it would work great for gliding.2010-06-16 14:43:00

Yeah option 3 is my favourite but I wanted to see what the community thought.
At first I was concerned that low gravity would affect the whole level but RTM's list says there are gravity switches that I can use on the moveable objects to make them behave normally. Amazing!

Well, If you look on the trailer for LBP2, and you see those little mice/rats/ferrets running around in the top down view? I think you should do spyro like that. Where you control him in the top down world via the direct control seat!2010-06-16 16:54:00

Top down? I thought about it, but then thought, 'He can't jump' so no, even if he could make him jump I am planning on using Top down for other characters like Sgt Byrd and Bentley.

i dont know much about logic but couldnt you somehow attach a mover to a sackbot that you activate with the press of a button (the mover, not the bot which is controlled by DCS). mover slows your fall down and gives illusion of gliding. add a gyroscope and were all set. in fire aspect a sackbot with creationator (creatonator?) on it should do the trick, if using sackbot a emitter might do it as well.2010-06-16 18:07:00

Goes to re-read the movers part...
Edit: Ok, sounds good, have changed option 4 to this as it was very similar to 3 anyway.

Glad to help. i love the spyro games BTW and think your levels will probably be fantastic (when you got the logic sorted out).

Edit: a piece of raw inspiration just smashed into my head. if i have understood things right you can now customize your planet depending on the theme of the levels (maybe only MM can do i with seperate stories). making a special planet for each world is would be a nice touch

as a resourceful creator i have no doubts that you have already thought about this and is ready to embrace the opportunity once the game comes out.

While Option 3 is probably the best option, have you considered, actually making a spyro the dragon and the using a DCS to control him. While this would probably make it about ten times harder, it would probably more authentic.2010-06-16 20:15:00

That would be the sackbot in option 4 and the vehicle in 5. I'll edit that detail in.

good luck!!

Yes, option 5 is a vehicle that would resemle (hopefully act like) Spyro.

I think option 4 because that way we can all look like spyro too ;P
Just wondering are you basing it on the amazing original trilogy of which I have such fond memories or that donky-balls the legend of stuff?

Direct control sackbot. Here's my reasoning:
1. It can look like spyro
2. You can make only the sackbot have low gravity (I think, by sticking an anitgrav thingamajigger to its circuit board)
3. You might not neccessarily need a creatinator, you might just be able to have it emitting something.

Though its hard for us to speculate really.

The original Insomniac series, I am thinking of playing the 'Legend of' series over the summer. Those ones are based in a completely different time/dimension/reality so I'm not bothered if they are bad.
The ones that ruined the original series is hero's tail and enter the dragonfly. They changed too much.

Depends on what you can get to work the best. I say 4 4 now, though. BTW you could make a top-down game where Spyrocan jump with the inter-layer movers (In the style of StarTropics on the NES, if anybody remembers that)2010-06-28 15:19:00

I think option 5 would be great, if you could pull it off.

Other than that, option 3 sounds good...

i just found out that you can add emitters to the microchips or the board things (whatever they are). could be useful if you want to make a sackbot spyro 2010-07-12 08:22:00

Thanks, I think I'll go with option 4 with the emitter, since it seems to be the most popular and easiest to do.

For jumping from a top down perspective, couldn't you just attach a layer to layer mover to spyro's circut board. You could have it so that, if there isn't anything to land on, you just drop down to the next layer. If you can't, I'll be really ticked off because I was planning to use that for one of my levels!2010-07-12 22:52:00

You could recreate spyro and his abilities by...
1. Creating sack bot with appropriate costume.
2.adding an invisible emmitter somewhere on the sackbot that spawns fire (you should use the direct control seat to hook up a certain button to activate the emmitter)
3. This is the slightly more advanced step...
Get a microchip and place it on the sackbot, than on the circut board place a movement orb, gyroscope, and a timed orb ( not sure of the actual name but I will check). Make it so that the movement orb moves along the x and y axis in the desired way and that the character maintains the correct position with the gyroscope. Now get the time tool and have the movement orb slowly deactivate.
4. Wire a button on the DCS to the microchip

The final affect will be that when you hold down/press the button the character will begin to maintain flight but will slowly lose the ability. Hopefully this has helped you, and sorry that I didn't just use the poll, but this system seemed less cluttered and I wanted to share it with you.

Wow! That setup sounds perfect! Thanks so much!
