Release date revealed (?)

Archive: 59 posts

A list of games that will support Move, we released yesterday after Sony's E3 conference. What does that matter to you, fellow happy gadders? Well, it reveals what is likely to be the release date of LittleBigPlanet 2.
The game will, according to that list, be released in November 2010.

http://www.littlebigland.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Screen-shot-2010-06-16-at-10.18.44.png

This may of course just be a placeholder date, but considering that it comes directly from Sony we can hope that it is true.

Via LittleBigLand (http://www.littlebigland.com/lbp-release-date-revealed/) of course.

Some online shops had that date, but since this is coming from Sony it's actually a bit more reliable.

That's a bit different though, innit?
Saying a product is going to be a hit is like betting on horses. One may have had a winning streak for a good few years (ie. PS2), but you never know how it's going to do today. Or how the competition is doing. (actually, better analogy would be how the offspring of that winner is going to do, but eh.)

When one of your developers is saying "we can have the game out by then-and-then" it's more solid. Sure, there may be delays, or it's pushed back due to marketing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Apples and oranges.

Fair enough.
This is still Internet 2.0. Until 3.0 rolls out with integrated sarcasm and humour detectors and tags it's generally safer to take it seriously unless it's very obvious.

Looks to be more info supporting a November 29th release date (as MisterVista notes above). This was in an e-mail I just received from Amazon:

We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on May 30 2010 (Order# [redacted]):

"LittleBigPlanet 2"
Estimated arrival date: November 29 2010

This is hardly news. The biggest buying month of the year is December, for tolerably obvious reasons. If they release the game too early (October) they're going to miss that buying cycle. Too late (into December or January) and they either get screwed if demand outstrips supply, or miss the huge buying cycle entirely and release in Q1, when nobody has money to spend (unless their fiscal starts in March, in which case they're releasing Q4; either way it pads year-end numbers).2010-06-25 09:58:00

This is hardly news.

news -noun a report of a recent event; intelligence; information

Please don't confuse news with information that "makes sense" to make yourself seem right. You're not the only one who thinks that it makes sense to release before the holidays, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is news.

Let me tell you that this will not be sold anywhere near November 2 that's for sure because this is Gran Turismo 5 date. You don't want to release another first party or exclusive game in the same period or else those other games will lose important initial sales in favor of GT5.

LBP will probably come out mid October or late November. STILL, I am not excited about PLACE HOLDER DATES. Each time I see a thread about this and its like people are discovering this reality of the industry every time. There is ALWAYS projections, ballparks and placeholder dates because marketing needs to be planned in advance. Also all the marketing process of a game needs to be planned. Gamestop needs a date to organise his stuff, the distribution needs it too. Sony also needs a calendar of release to make projections, financial expectations, plan marketing, etc.

And still those are not "release dates". They are just projections. It only tells us the game will most probably come out in November it seems. But wasn't it expected? it's the biggest month of the year with december and most "fall" games are coming out in that period.

^^ This.

I'll be sold when an official date from MM/Sony is announced. Even the wording from comph's delivery date says "estimated." Saying that the game is arriving in November is no different than saying "in time for the holiday season" or "before Christmas."

Either way, I'm rather "meh" on the actual delivery date. I'm more worried about setting aside the $60 to get it in the first place.

Release date isn't 100% sure until the game's actually released. I mean really, delays, setbacks, and even early releases alter release dates somewhat often. Remember the first LBP and its delay?

Just wait until it's released and then you'll know the date! Haha!

Completely different (though obviously overlapping in some cases) demographics.
Not to mention that most consumers with both consoles and no real preference between the two will buy the game (and any CoD games produced through 2012) on the 360 due to the DLC-exclusivity deal (http://www.cinemablend.com/games/E3-2010-Call-Of-Duty-Black-Ops-DLC-Is-Xbox-360-Timed-Exclusive-25167.html) for the game on that console. I don't expect CoD games for the PS3 to be causing any other games releasing in a similar window any real grief for a little while.

Anyway, back on topic: Until confirmed by Sony or Media Molecule, this date is nothing but an educated guess. We don't even know if Media Molecule themselves set that date - it could very well have been Sony. If you look at the date, it gives Media Molecule the biggest window of flexibility to change the date and still meet their promise of a 2010 release date, while still hitting shelves at the latest point any publisher would want to release a game if they wanted to fully capitalize on the holiday season.

Still, you won't really lose anything by believing that this is the release date - the most I expect to happen is for this date to get shifted earlier into November or October, if that, so you'll probably just be hit with the nice surprise of getting it in your hands earlier than you initially expected. No promises, though - the games industry is incredibly unpredictable, and I would never rule any possibility out entirely (even, heaven forbid, a delay into Spring 2011).

So basically what I'm saying is, we don't know anything for sure, so don't form any solid expectations!

Games are normally coming out on tuesdays. Except Nintendo publications that are more often the not on Sundays.
November 2th is the tuesday of that week. And since it's Gran Turismo 5's release date, you can bet big money there WON'T be any other first party games released on the same day and maybe not even in the same 2 weeks span.

So yeah, If there's a date I wouldn't believe it's November 5th. It's very very highly unlikely.

Please note that MM is European (GASP, REALLY!? NOOOOOOO!), and that European games tend to release on Fridays.
So, IF November fifth is a solid date, this means either simultaneous release in all (or at least EU and NA regions), Europe gets it first OR the US gets it November second.

Of course, we have NO confirmation from either Sony or Media Molecule, so let's not get carried away.

EDIT: Also, Gran Turismo 5 does not share a demography with LittleBigPlanet and regardless of demographies, there have been instances of first party or really big games releasing on the same day. Though I'll be the first to admit I can't name any from the top of my head.

I get you. Let me however explain myself in greater detail.
About the first part of your reply, I was indeed not considering the Europe release date. I guess they would be the same week but different date. Or at least the same month. Would be interesting to check what were the release dates of LBP because I suppose they will keep a similar strategy. Anyways, my guess was only for the American release.

Now, about Gran Turismo 5. I know it's possible that 2 major titles are coming out the same day but it's EXTREMELY RARE it's 2 major firt party games for the same console. You never saw Halo and Gears release the same day. You never saw 2 major Sony first party to release the same day either. And what makes this even more impossible is because Gran Turismo is an exception. It's the best selling fist party game of Sony. This thing will sell MILLIONS of copies on LAUNCH DAY. It will be phenomenal. It's those rare kind of game that almost every owner of said console will buy (pretty much like Halo for Microsoft or again, Zelda for Nintendo). Since almost everybody will buy it, they never risk other major games at the same time, be a game of the same genre or not. It's just too much risk of losing sales on the other release because the reality is that most people buy one game at a time.

GT5 will be FREAKING huge. Only Prologue, basically a demo, sold SEVEN MILLION COPIES. This is more than all Forza games combined and we are speaking of a 30$ demo here. So yeah, this is the power of the Gran Turismo IP. Nobody wants to sell a game at the same time as this titan. It's marketing suicide.

Seven million is low for the games market for such a supposedly huge game...

Since the games are completely different, I think they could come out the same day.

You will never see a Forza released the same day as Halo or Gears. You will never see major games released the same day simply because publishers have proven statistics that it's not good for sales. 2 huge games the same day = most people chose one. If you sell a couple of weeks appart, most people are buying BOTH.
Also, that figures of Prologue sales is impressive not matter how you look at this. It's just a demo and it's been selling better than most AAA games that comes out. It's been selling like those Halo, major Nintendo titles, Call of Duty, etc. There's like 3 games a year selling like that. If a demo sells better than 99% of what's released on the market, you can bet the full game will sell crazy.

So yeah, of course we will see what happens in November but 2 major games released the same never really happen so I really doubt this will happen now. GT5 and LBP2 won't release the same day. Remember this friendly bet of mine.

GT5 has never really been delayed. They never announced when the game would be ready until recently (last E3). It's normal for a game of this scope to take 5 years to devellop. And you need to substract to that the time to make Tourist Trophy, GTHD, GT5 Prologue and GT PSP.
The only delay the game saw is in Japan, the original release was planned for "Spring 2010" but is has been delayed to include Move support.
