What are you best at?

Archive: 35 posts

While playing levels and comparing what I can make to others it seems that everybody is stronger in one field of creation mechanics than others.

Also this is your specialized creation mechanic, even if you are good at more than 1 the question is which is your BEST.

So which are you best at?

me, I would have to say Logic.

I'm best at making people hate me.
apparently.

but seriously, i am no good at logic and people complain about my gameplay, so i guess that leaves design.

Using only 1 or 2 materials and managing to make a detailed and pretty level. I'm also pretty good with minigame mechanics, but unfortunately none of my minigames have seen the light of day.2010-06-16 03:28:00

I want a multipoll! And the most important point was forgotten:

"I'm very good at procrastination."

I'll fill in the poll later.

Realizing where you get good or bad feedback is an important and difficult step in becoming a good creator.
@poll: Third point goes like "I could..." while the others "I can..." is that a bug or a feature? I mean a mistake or important, but I'm not getting the point?

To be honest, I'm better at making objects and contraptions than levels, so I'll go with design - because I can design pretty objects!!

Oops.. I clicked gameplay by accident =(

Weell, you know what I meant!

What kind of poll is that? There are many, many more important parts of a level...

Gameplay
Design
Mechanics
Vehicles
Story
Logic
Visuals

If a level design was summed up in three features, most people would agree on gameplay, story, and visuals. My list just covers other main parts in a level. What about specific objects or types of objects that people can be good at making, like vehicles, characters, logic, lighting, stickering, etc? There are way too many things someone can be "good at" than that poll covers .

I picked logic because I've always had to come up with creative ways of making things do what I wanted, even when it seemed impossible. A lot of my older logic is pretty darn sloppy and overdone (I've come up with some wierd logic solutions in the past), but since reading Rtm's logic blog, my new stuff is cleaner and much more thermo efficient.2010-06-16 21:06:00

I' not sure, have you tried editing your first post? You can change thread title there for example.

Taking the words right out of my mouth, hence for me "older" means just a few months.

Admit it, he pays you to do publicity, doesn't he?

I'd say that I can manage myself when it comes to logic, but my strong point might be gameplay. No, wait, design. I really cant choose!

I do enjoy creating a clever and intruiging storyline and unravelling it in a way that may make Stephen King proud. (Note: I've never read Stephen King's work, I just thought he was a good example.2010-06-17 09:05:00

Heh. Everybody who's every had the thermometer fill up on them should read his blog. He's found ways to squeeze every last drop out of the thermo. Then if you wanna' get hardcore and make the thermo your bi***, you can read Aya's posts on how to cheat the thermo.

I find design the easiest, but only in an arty sense. I'm pants at logic and designing interesting gameplay elements. You wouldn't believe how many times I've been tweaking the visuals for hours on end only to realise the thermo's half full and I don't have a level to show for it. 2010-06-17 22:34:00

I'm particularly good at designing things that are infuriating to navigate . I more or less get a lot inspiration from the Unfair Platformer series. The only difference being I don't really do traps. I just do stuff that takes a bit of skill to work around. My weak point is definitely aesthetics, but I'm getting better with it all the time.2010-06-17 23:25:00

I'm extremely lazy when it comes to adding logic but, when I finally get around to doing it I try to do it in a way thats entertaining to me.
I love hiding logic in plain sight, for instance, when I started designing my "Howth Beach..." level I knew that I wanted to incorporate some form of flight so I hid my logic in clouds & cloud movement, this way the clouds serve both a functional & decorative purpose. In my "Set the Controls..." level I made my logic multi-task, so that not only did it effect a useful action but also several completely unnecessary & likely unnoticed actions such as turning lights & sound effects on & off, rotating/moving objects/structures in far off areas...

That being said, my logic is probably as messy, sloppy & full of redundancies as it comes, I have wires going in every direction from one end of the level to the other & half the time I don't remember what anything does anymore but, thats fine by me, working out the level's mechanics on my own is half the fun of creating.

Heh. I'm god-awful when it comes to logic. Why, about half of the logic I've tried to make either gets jammed and is impossible to fix... or spontaneously breaks and spirals out of control, leaving nothing to fix! xD

My two strong suits are in design and gameplay... but more gameplay. See, with my designs, I "can" make very detailed objects, but most of the stuff I make is just some work with stickers and gradients, along with clean-cut corners and 2-dimensional properties. In all honesty, I'm more of a "stickerist" than I am a "designer", whereas I can make something look pretty in appearance, but almost painfully simple in terms of technicality. It's really the gradient stickers that makes my work look good.

Gameplay, I have to say, is perhaps my strongest ability... and my most surprising. When I think of gameplay, I always scheme up contraptions and elements that are rarely used (if at all) in a typical action/adventure level or something else of the type. I've always loved to experiment with new designs and limitations on myself. In an upcoming level I'm working on (and that I PLAN to finish before LBP2... hopefully), I'm tossing out pistons (for the most part) and replacing them with rockets, springs and explosives; imma let gravity take care of the rest.

So, yeah... I'm really good when it comes to gameplay. Y'all will be able to see a sample of it once LBPC: TG comes out.

I have yet to publish a good level with great visuals and gameplay... although I may have done that with my survival challenge Deep Danger... but also there the logic part is really in focus... well not for the player but for me when I created it... I could post some pics from the logic...

I'm not that good with logic that I could build a calculator (okay maybe I could if I wanted...) but I have built a pretty decent elevator...
