New High Quality Image Search

Archive: 35 posts

Hi all.

I know I've been away for a bit, but I've been busy developing a a new image search engine.

www.smartimagesearch.net76.net (http://www.smartimagesearch.net76.net) (Dead)

www.qualityimagesearch.com (http://www.qualityimagesearch.com)

It only searches for high quality images and I'd be grateful for any feedback.

There are currently about 2,000 images in the index but this is growing rapidly by the day.

I think this would be a great resource for the sig makers and inspiration for all those other creators.

BTW, you can also add your own images or even whole website pages!

I'm also looking for suggestions on the 980 width x 560 height background image...

What do you think?

Rhy

lol mrsv!!

I have had some programming issues and had to delete 600 image links but they are building back up faster now.

Glad you like it - I'm improving it all the time. Just a shame it takes ages developing from scratch!

I even saw someone had submitted a few links!

Quite cool, I sometimes spend hours looking for decent source images when using Photoshop.

By the way, great avatar! I find a lot of .gif avatars a little irritating, but yours is slow and doesn't distract the eye. :arg:

Smart Image Search does not use stored thumbnails of images that may not exist anymore. Instead, we directly load the original image. This may take a little longer to load, but you can be sure it's still there.
Now that is a good feature.

Nice work Rhy, not many car pics yet though

Thanks very much to all. It took ages to do but its now paying off. The crawler is now fully automated and I'll soon be adding a link for the crawler to the main page so you can actually watch it working!

I know car images are a bit short on the ground yet but the crawler is more efficient now and it's pulling in images much faster.

The trouble is, out of every 100 images checked and stored, maybe only one is large enough or suitable so it has to work that much harder to get the high quality stuff.

I'll also be working more on the search function so that you're not limited to a minimum of 4 characters.

Very nice! Its always very annoying when you need a specific photo but the search engines are always full of crap...

And it could make for some nice wallpapers too! I think i'll bookark it for later use...

That image crawler in action hurt my brain. Also, Drew Barrymore came to my house and hit me with a milky way wrapper while I was watching it...2010-06-20 10:03:00

LOL - if you think that hurt your head, you ought to try writing the code that drives it!!

Seriously though, I should put a warning about milky way occurrances.....

EDIT__________

**** - site is down for a bit ... too much traffic....

Yay - back up again...

That's a very cool search engine.
However, I don't really know how to make it work though.
I typed in "food" and the image results were Harry Potter.

Just had another quick peek at your website Rhy and it is getting better and better. The nature pictures on the home page are brilliant, as are all the others.

Well done :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3

LOL - this is because of the number of images searched. My site has only been working properly for about a week and has crawled almost 20,000 images. Google has BILLIONS!!!

Thing is - google searches everything, including rubbish, whereas this searches for good quality images. Food will come XD.

Yay - I can't get 5 stars on my lbp levels but this will do nicely - thank you MrsV!!!

That sucks... or does it? No seriously, this is because there are no images of computers yet so it searches for the next best thing and it found "computer" in both the internet address and image address for the bikini images (www.free (http://www.free)computerwallpapers...) - not a high score but there nonetheless. This will improve as more relevant images are crawled and the others are pushed out of the way.

That is exactly what I wanted - You have just made my day! The "I hate Google Images" thing is exactly why I wanted to build my own. I was fed up with small, rubbish pictures.... or even large rubbish pictures

There is no turtle images

Unfortunately, the crawler has been busy searching football images for the past 2 days leaving little room for anything else! Believe me, its working hard and has just reached the 30,000 image index point tonight. Yes, 30 thousand!

i trust you are making sure everything is free to use

Of course. Paid sites rarely get a look in these days becasue of teh amount of good opensource or freeware available. I have however put an advert on the image view page. Each time it's clicked... it doesn't cost you a penny but google pays me and that goes towards the cost of running the site... which will increase a lot shortly when I switch to a pro domain name and host.

BTW - the thumbnails load MUCH faster now because I have a thumb generator which I ran tonight (took hours!).

I hope people are starting to go back to it now... maybe?

Wow Rhy,
I've just gone back to have another play around and I have to say with only just over 37,000 images it's already pulling up great pics. And I see you can search 1-3 letter words now as well. I got an interesting range of pictures come up when I searched 'I'

I think I can safely say that I won't be using Google Images again. I just wish I wasn't on dial-up speed so I could use it properly. Come July 7th I'll take another look.

Thanks for making this Rhy, you've done an amazing job

I tried this out when you first posted but at that time I couldn't find much relevant images.

Tried it again there and have to say it's much improved, every word I searched there was images that related very well. Not to mention a great mix and all very nice quality!

Keep it up

Hi again all.

It's been a while, but I had a problem with my free hosts... unsurprisingly!

I have now hosted this site professionally with my own .com domain name.

Site is now www.qualityimagesearch.com (http://www.qualityimagesearch.com)

I had to start over with the images but they have now reached over 100,000 indexed images. Quite a few mods on the site as well to ensure fast loading.

Hope everyone likes it and keeps using it! (now has a few lbp images)

Aww thanks Alex, I'm touched, and no of course I don't mind you adding it - the more links the better!

LOL! Cats are coming. This version had to start from scratch so I lost all the original links, but they'll be back, have no fear. And... you can come out now.. I don't bite

Love it. So did you add each imagine yourself!?! 0_o

If I had to add each image manually, I would be here every day of my life! - no, the crawler searches autonomously for images. All I have to do (and any admin team) is visually check each image to make sure it is high enough quality. I am now about 25,000 pending images in arrears!

Still, impressive! And I just realised I wrote "imagine". It was late, I was tired.
