STAR WARS: Return to the Death Star: err... Etc!julesyjules
The circle is nearly complete. With your friends doing battle down on Endor, you arrive on the new Death Star, ready to face the Dark Side. The Empire however, is in need of a little helping hand.....
Hey all

Just published the new level. Its not (as I had initially intended) the final one, as i took a slight left turn during the process and just went with it as a) I was enjoying doing it so much, and b) just didn't have the thermo to get everything in my head into the one level. I'm cracking straight on with the finale-proper, but in the meantime, come and get to know the Dark Side just a little better... ; )

Big thanks to everyone who popped by in create, particularly to comphermc who helped streamline a few logic-y bits, and then had to do it all over again because I was a twit.

Hello-

Your levels never cease to amaze me, there's always something new and funny in each of your levels in this series! This level had a lot of ingenious humor, my favorite part being where one of the stormtroopers say 'Nothings working properly but don't blame me, I'm far too busy hiding all the dark matter and visible switches'. The lighting was spectacular, and the way you used decorations flabbergasts me entirely! I didn't encounter any problems, and I managed to get the highscore. I look forward to the conclusion of the series.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and gave the level a well deserved <3.

Thanks a lot frog-boy!

Just played with a friend and only just realised that the trigger sticker I've used in the level doesn't come up automatically for them (it does for me in create & play mode). How do you set a sticker to come up in the players 'trigger sticker' section??? (its the black paint splodge which I don't think is even a collectable, so it's not a case of players not having it)

Ok, I thought that sticker was available to all from the outset. Is there a way of giving away a (non DLC) sticker that hasnt been collected? Just tried it in a prize bubble to no avail. I could just do a custom one but i don't want it to be a rectangle....<grumble>2010-06-14 19:52:00

Creative, fun, funny as usual. Definitely one of the better things to ever happen to Star Wars. A good amount of challenge for someone who sucks at games like me, especially. Though I did think the bit with the lift and the gas vents was kind of pointless, I didn't really feel threatened by it. It's okay. I forgive you.

I know this isn't F4F, but if you be so kind as to play my level 'Deck' I would be much obliged!

Not that I know of.

You could do what Korndawgg did and have the sticker or decoration near where they need to place it. I think that works. Might look weird depending on how you have it set up though. I haven't played yet so I don't know what the situation on that is.

Yeh, there's a paintcan you push around between the vents as the lift goes up to paint the wall and get points...! I'll stick a mouth in to highlight it, thanks monstahr!

This is the best level you've ever made Julesyjules. The 3D layer is jaw dropping and the gameplay and challenge really catches up with your STAR WARS level series. And as always, you added really clever humor to this level [Love the joke about stormtroopers being too lazy to make some switches visible]. My favorite moment of this level is when you hang on to an TIE fighter as you're in for a ride. Although my Jedi powers predict wrong that we'll see an epic battle in this chapter [as what I said in your previous level], we're really are going to see that battle in your next chapter. Looking forward to see the conclusion of STAR WARS err etc. levels.

By the way, I went back playing some of your levels and there appears to be a bug in the Jabba's Palace level. After you free Han Solo, you couldn't enter the Rancor's layer and Jabba mysteriously floats and Han Solo disappears. I restarted it and it's fine. Don't know how did it happen but find out what caused a problem.

There's been a couple of people that have mentioned that, but whenever I go in and test it, it always works fine for me. I think there must be something the occasional player does at that point that i hadn't anticipated that causes it, cos i just can't work it out....

Yep, that's the solution I've gone with, it's not ideal but it doesn't look too out of place. I've added a mouth to the lift with the vents too, hopefully it's more obvious that it's not a standard 'avoid the gas' situation and there's big bubble combos to be had.

Played this last night.... wow, man! The visuals in this one are astounding. It has this feeling about it that I haven't experienced in any other level. The movement of the platforms and the X Wing fighters were mesmerising. I'm not going to go so far to say it was your best one - I played through the entire series a few weeks ago to refresh myself, and the series as a whole is excellent - but this one ranks up there.

Not that you should change anything, but near the beginning on the spinning platforms - I don't know what it was, but I had one HECK of a time performing those jumps. I could imagine a youngster going in and having a really tough time. If you're at all concerned, you could allow them to be grabbed.... but, obviously not really a flaw.

Also, I stupidly didn't realize the bottom of the paint platform could be grabbed - I had the platform throw me on top with the paint can and the storm trooper and thought I was supposed to jump from there, but couldn't..... then I had a "duh" moment when I realized the bottom of the platform was stickered with the yellow/black stripes.

Stunning work, pal! I absolutely loved it, and the humor was great. 5 stars and a heart!

By the way, if you REALLY need something to do once you finish the series, you could go back and use some of the techniques you've learned in the first of the series. Compared to all the rest, that one is starting to look a bit dated.

I'm really pleased that people are digging the visuals, when I first started making it I was a bit worried about suffering in comparison to comphs 'Interstellar' and Steve's 'Dead Space' - these levels have set a ridiculously high bar for the 'spaceship look', so i just tried to imbue it with a different type of vibe, more cavernous and warehouse-like, to make it stand out in its own way.

I've set those platforms to 'grab', if you found them tricky, then they're definitely too much, too soon.

Thanks for the feedback Ccub. The first one, yeh, it's definitely showing it's age. Probably needs a complete re-do, but I'm so close to finishing these I'll be leaving it be for a long while yet.....

I've never seen lighting done so well in a contrast between light and dark. Did you use gradients on those pillars? I wanted to check but my friend passed that section too fast, lol. Whatever it was, it was beautiful. Your material choices were also really impressive. Overall, I think you made a great choice in making it look"more cavernous and warehouse-like". I've never seen anything like that. As usual, the jokes were good. Nothing like lazy stormtroopers controlling a spacecraft the size of a small moon! The platforming was really well-tuned with the environment and theme. There are many clever things in this level, like the boxes or presents of different kinds of switches. The set-pieces were fantastic, like the TIE Fighter part. You nailed the Star Wars theme and made another great level for the series.

Great job.
I remember your star wars series was actually one of the first levels I've played o.O This one was your hardest one IMO, but I loved it. I liked the sleek, PS3ish visuals and the clever uses of switches (when they were in the boxes). Good length, sometimes it was hard to see, but I enjoyed it. I didn't think the 3D was jaw-dropping, but I liked it.

Out of interest, what is the logic behind the "err... Etc!" at the end of the titles?

(At least it's unique )

Still love the levels though! Darth Vader fight was quite fun and well thought out! (when I figured it out anyway XD )

Did you use gradients on those pillars?

If they're the ones I think you mean (the up and downy ones) , yep, a couple of black gradients on them. I've never really used the gradient stickers before, they were really handy in this one cos the level is basically 10 shades of black and grey....

So instead of telling you exactly how much I loved it I'll get straight to the point and tell you about the minor problem I found (Very minor) Around half way into the level there's a ladder that's out of reach and you have to push a large box over to climb it, the problem is even with the box you still can't jump onto it, and have to grab to pull it down, I never thought of grabbing it because it's thin mateial... So, being the idiot that I am, I decided to push the box off the edge to the right and I had to restart the level as a result

If there was an invisible wall there to stop the box I would have realised that I wasn't supposed to go that way, and known that it must of had something to do with the ladder... I know it was my fault but I thought I'd mention it anyway :]

There's a paintpot there to stop exactly that from happening but somewhere along the way it must have been plopped into the wrong layer, my bad, I'll get in and sort it soon as I'm back on. Thanks for re-starting 'post, its a long way through the layer, appreciated.

@Dayne - are you sure you did the right level? (laugh) No fight in this one...

The ':err ...etc' thing was initially just taking the mickey out of the amount of colon's and titles within titles I had to put in to clarify which part of the series you were playing.

Thanks guys! I went in this morning and added a magic mouth to one section. The high scores are coming in really low and I think people are missing a fun little bubble combo section (the paintcan in the liftshaft) because I made it too obtuse. I usually prefer to let the player do the working out, but thats not great when even the most experienced players aren't twigging onto it.2010-06-17 15:52:00

Weeeeeee finally played LBP again today, and caught up on your Star Wars levels! Still the best series out there

One little thing - at the end of this level, when your on the platform right before that big blue light, and there's a small checkpoint on the platform: you can knock the checkpoint off, and then if you die you will appear on a bunch of dark matter (if you keep walking eventually you'll get back to the tie fighter section, but it's impossible to beat the level because the platform at the end is gone).

Anyways, just a nitpick

And since I didn't give comments on the last few levels, I looooooved both Ewok levels!

Hey there! I played through the level again and spotted no problems at all. I like that you turned down the speed on those platforms. The level is still very challenging, but it's so fun.

I'm amazed by your creativity incorporating the "paint" theme in this level. The new Death Star is not yet completed, so it makes perfect sense that the paint is still wet. hehe

Great job making a fantastic looking Death Star interior that is also fun to play. The space vistas with the stars and big ships were very convincing. I thought the dialog with the storm troopers was really funny...there is no bracket B! I also really enjoyed the whole idea of helping with the painting, very clever stuff.

I did die A LOT and walked right off my fair share of platforms...for a while I thought I wasn't going to get past the floating I-beams in the beginning. The level is pretty dark and the glare from the setting sun wasn't helping. I also wasn't expecting this kind of difficulty based on the previous levels. Anyway, I was very impressed, had a lot of fun, and gave it 5 stars and heart. Thanks for another great level!

I'd have to say my favorite part was where you are riding on the ammunition on the conveyor belts.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It seems a lot of people are finding it pretty hard, and it was intended to be a romp rather than a tough level - if anyone can remember where they had the most trouble, I 'd like to just bring the difficulty down just a notch and make it a bit more player friendly....it might be just one spot that's causing the aggro.....(EDIT - or not, lol)2010-06-19 12:22:00

For me the hardest part was the spinning paint cans. It wasn't the cans so much as it was that I played it 2 player. When you're on the highest point, and the other player dies, the camera goes back down to the checkpoint. A few times I was in mid-jump and the camera veered off to the player spawning in. Although the checkpoint is in the most logical place. I'll play it again by myself and see how it behaves. Honestly though, this was not nearly as difficult for me as Jabba's Palace was. 2010-06-19 13:14:00

Right: having played it I'd guess the problem is that its to dark. Early in the level I ended up running right off the end of platforms because I couldn't see where they ended. It probably doesn't help that its quite bright at the moment, but I ended up turning the 'gamma' up in visual options in order to see. Other than that, I died a few times on the "don't step on the clean floor section", but I wouldn't say it was excessively difficult.

Also: Great level! I'm looking forward to the finale!

If I may- I found the difficulty right in line with the last three say... I think it is the perfect next installment in this series. I personally died about 15x on those rotating girder platforms, if you slowed them down and or made them grabbable... then Ihave no qualms! I didn't get/understand the point bubbles on the lift-- they seemed to just pop out of their own accord... (mind you I last played @ around 73 plays, so I,m thinking for my tastes... Your there). I'll play again later and if anything stands out I'll contact you... what does stand out is how highly unique your series is... I mean really as long as you have the WANT to make these, you should. You are the appeal of these levels and be it Star Wars or whatever else... I cant wait too see what you cook-up next! How about a beach blanket barbecue on Mustafar?2010-06-19 14:19:00

Thanks for your prompt thoughts guys, thats really helpful.

Some of those things I've tweaked since you played i think. I've tried to brighten it as far as I can without losing the 'blackness', but i'll up it a notch in the earlier stages. With any luck that should be good, it just occurred that I might be on the wrong side of 'bumping' here....

OK, Julesyjules... you seriously have to let us know...
How do you build levels so quickly?! Are you holding someone hostage making him build levels for ya?! ...I guess we will never know...

I played this yesterday and it surely didn't disappoint! I liked how you kept it quieter to add up to the atmosphere of the "Death Star" ooooooo! The lighting and material textures made it look really REALLY nice. But what always makes me 5-star your levels is the freakin dialogue! It's simply genius! I was laughing thru the entire level, especially when the 2 guys were building the spaceship! LOL

If you're looking for a pretty level, with clever gameplay and hilarious dialogue.. look no further, this is it!

Great job, man!

This level was hilarious, lol! I liked the part with bracket A and B and the part with Darth Vader showing his crazy looking face....and the beginning about hearting him...And....And...you get the Idea. Very funny dialogue. The level was excellent itself. I didnt find it difficult at all. Onlt part I was confused at was the beginning where the player can pull on the soldier and the whole platform would slide right. It was hard to understand what to do at first until I grabbed him. Other than that everything felt well thought out and smooth. I did have a wee bit trouble with the conveyer belt area but I think its perfect like it is. 5 stars and <3 from me.2010-06-20 03:13:00

Absolutely fantastic! As always you do a wonderful job combining great visuals, humor, and gameplay. I loved the construction theme of the level and how it progressed as you made your way through it. It doesn't quite top the Endor levels (those were godly!), but it's right up there with my other favorites in this series. I'm both excited and sad to see it getting close to the end!

Well done as always!

What can I say, it's absolutely great!
+ the humor
+ the design
+ the buckets
+ the fun factor
+ the cliffhanger ending
+ the part with the boxes on the moving platforms

I really loved this level, heck, I love the whole series (my favorites being the level with Yoda, the one with the fatso and the one with the cuddly bears!). I hope that we can see more from you soon, keep it up

Oh and, what are you planning on doing after finishing the series? Take a long break or start something new?

Amazing level. Loved every bit of it.
I was too focused on the gameplay to take in most of the visuals, but from the bits I did see (conveyor belts/switch boxes/tie fighters/etc) were great.
5 stars and a heart.
I still haven't played your older SW levels (only one), but definitely gonna have a go in the weekend.

BTW, the conveyor belts wern't actually moving right? Just a wheel in the crates (/pistons) or something?

Thanks guys!

@midnight, yep, it's just wheels.

@blizzard & arnaldo, yep, a long break i think. I won't be touching the prequels, inspite of them being completely ripe for comedy value. On to something completely different, definitely...

I finally got round to catching up on a few levels this morning this obviously being one!

Great fun as usual, great to play and very fun. The dialogue was brilliant, I loved the stormtroopers craic, especially the ones arguing over the flat pack tie fighters. The whole tie fighter conveyor section was brilliant, as was the painting minigame.

The little star destroyers in the background looked great, but why no super star destroyer?

Awesome work mate well done.

So, will you be restarting the series in LBP2 to add the trench runs and other vehicle bits in, I think you should
