Here and There by amazingflyingpoo
http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt179/amazingflyingpoo/HereandThere5.jpgA New Kind of Puzzle: Transport sackboy and objects between the foreground and background to progress through a series of environmental puzzles. Be Warned: This level is intentionally challenging!

In this level, sackboy is given the ability to travel into the background in order to progress through the level. Farther into the level the player will also learn to send objects between the foreground and the background in order to solve increasingly difficult puzzles.

By the end of the level, you will be required to consider your environment in order to progress. Please keep in mind that the level is meant to be hard. There really aren't many difficult levels with unique puzzles, so I wanted to actually create a new environment for a unique puzzle style (travelling between foreground and background).

I am happy to report that there is no lag in the level (which is very surprising since the thermo is maxed and the level lags worse than any level I have ever made when I am in create mode). There is a lot of tech going on to make the background follow what you are doing in the foreground, and also to make sure that portals are being placed where they need to be. Because of this, the level may seem short on later playthroughs, but I'm guessing that your initial playthrough should last you 15 or 20 minutes.

Thanks so much for playing!

Here is a video of the level (thanks SirPaper!!!), but seeing as the level is a puzzle level, I would highly advise NOT watching it unless you either don't have a PSP or you end up getting stuck in the level and need a video to help: (SPOILERS) Video of Here and There (SPOILERS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUJZz6lFnPo)

Here are some pictures of how switching from the foreground to the background looks (BIG thanks to Domik12 for the incredible pictures!):

Nope, it is not out now. I am waiting for one last piece of feedback from a beta tester and then it will be time to publish, so it all depends on that. I'll then convert this thread to the actual level thread. My guess is that it will be up in the next 12 hours (it could be 1 or 2, or it could be 10 or 11. It all depends on if I get the feedback before I head to bed here in China).2010-06-14 13:54:00

OOOOOH! I get it! You can switch between having things in the far background and the foreground.

Super exciting! Can't wait.

Assuming this is an RPG, I'm so going to use this for a platformer. This is weird, it's like my subconscious knew there was going to be a new Poo level, because I spent most of last night playing through Destiny and your other levels.2010-06-14 14:01:00

WOO-HOO! Very First Downloader and first to leave feedback on a....AFP level?!!! Wow, aren't I lucky?!!! [EDIT: Dangit! FamousCustard, you beat me to the review! ]

First off, AFP, you really surprised me with this level. It wasn't as good as I was suspecting, even the artwork wasn't really as good as I hoped. The answer to all of this is simple: you went beyond what I thought you would do. You're an amazing creator; heck, you have 1337 creator hearts to prove it! But I never suspected something as astounding as this! You have surprised me many times by doing stuff I thought wasn't possible, and this level goes past impossible.

The visuals were awesome. Like, not awesome as in, "Gee, that's cool," but awesome as in it literally put me in awe. The foreground and background both looked equally good, and I'm sure it must have taken a TON of work to represent the background so much, when it becomes the foreground. I seriously felt like I was transporting to the background. Not one location in the level was plain at all, and everything you built to make the level look nice looked totally amazing. I only know a few creators capable of visuals like that, and you're obviously one of them.

The gameplay was great! I mean, it was pretty much a puzzle level, which is different than your usual style, but you still created a level that blew me away. I liked how the whole level was pretty much one big puzzle that just gets harder and harder as you go along. The puzzle part itself was extremely unique. I have never before seen anything even remotely like this. The originality of it just makes it that much better, even though it can't really get any better. It was one of your tougher levels, but it wasn't so tough I got mad at it (for the record, that has only happened once, and the level will remain unnamed).

I could write 20 more paragraphs on the awesomeness of this level, but my hands are starting to hurt from typing. But this level was very well done, and yes, I am already awaiting your next level.

Visuals: 5/5
Gameplay: 6/5
Originality: 6/5
Flow: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

Closing comments: Outstandingly Awesome With Quite a Bit Of Astounding Scenes

Five stars plus a heart for you!!! And thanks for the level! It was an absolute BLAST to play!!!

You've only gone and done it again. You have made something totally new AGAIN!! I think that LBP is almost the best game of all time just because of the level editor. Anything can be made with it! This level looks like a clear example of that. I'll leave feedback soon. Can't wait!

EDIT: Here's my review

Wow! The brand new puzzle technique in here is superb. The way the background and foreground have the noticeable landmarks as well just make it seem so well thought out. The visuals are brilliant. The gameplay is revolutionary for the creators (although I think I've only just figured out how it is done, I don't think I'd be able to do it very well). The fact that there is no lag is a godsend! the way the difficulty gradually gained intensity and I loved the boxes being moved to and from the different planes and that you actually see it appear is awesome! The best part of it all is that you've made it simple for the player and it really is. Just hold retry. That's it; change between the planes.

Well there you go AFP! You've taken two planes and turned them into four. You've doubled the experience that you can give by using a simple tool. Definitely 5 stars and a heart!

@famouscustard:

The concept was complicated and took some getting used to, but it was excecuted brilliantly. This level was really something different, which I love

I figured that it would be hard to get your mind wrapped around it at first since it is a new concept, but I figured that most people would enjoy getting used to a new way of playing. It is great to hear that you loved that it was different.

It was greet to see a level which actually required me to think. Normally, hard levels just have some difficult jumps, but I think this redefines a "hard" level. Anyway, i got to the scoreboard and felt really great when I did.

It is a HUGE relief to hear that you enjoyed the fact that it was actually challenging. I was very worried that everyone would be irritated at the difficulty, even though I spent a long time trying to make it logical and fun instead of just irritating, and I also tried to ease the player in with the two "training puzzles". I am fully expecting that the general LBP community will rate the level badly because of the difficulty, but all I wanted is to make a level that my forum friends will enjoy, so hopefully most other people will feel the way that you did.

Only one improvement I can think of, where were the bubbles?

I just didn't feel like bubbles belonged in a level like this. The only way I could think of putting them in would be a race setting, and that would just thoroughly irritate people as they get stuck trying to figure stuff out. I ended up opting out of using them. I'm sorry if it hampered the experience for you.

Thanks so much for playing famouscustard!

@ThisIsInsane:

I just want to start off by saying that it is soo encouraging that you liked the level so much even though it was challenging! It was a HUGE relief to read your post!

I actually feel bad quoting the things that you said since you were so kind, so I am just going to reply to them without quotes

I'm very glad that you liked the visuals. I am by no means a visual genius like Spark, Jeff, Salieri, Taffey, etc..., but I had a lot of fun representing the background/foreground scenes. At first it was VERY hard to get the perspective right, but by the end I had a very good grasp on it.

As for the gameplay, it's great to hear that it felt so original to you. The thing that I strive for more than anything else is to make an original level, so I am a happy poo to hear you say that! It's also great to hear that the level didn't irritate you! That is my biggest worry. BTW, you have me curious about this one level that did really irritate you :-D

Thank you so much for playing the level and for leaving such in depth feedback ThisIsInsane! I am really looking forward to your next level!

Time for The feedback!

Anyways, after playing this level, I've figured out how you did it.
You know the elevator thing I learned? It's similar to that, but more complex.
Anyways, I'm amazed to see a new level mainly about puzzles.
You mentioned the puzzle at the end would be difficult, but I found it rather easy.
A new level from Amazingflyingpoo, and it is rather amazing.

I found the whole landscape to be rather ideal and gorgeous.
The song you intended with the level is one my favorites.
The trees and houses implemented were outstanding.
The puzzles were very new and different. I noticed the two worlds too.

The foreground is on bottom and the background is on top.
What I liked about the puzzle is that you can see the puzzle in the background. Keeping track of two areas was idealistic. Very nice! This level had a puzzle I've never seen before! The length of the level was long, and guess what? It wasn't an RPG. An easy way to kill time is either a back and fourth sequence, or a puzzle. Although, this level consisted of both.

You're probably most interested in problems with the level. I only encountered one problem, causing me to restart. No, it's not halfway through the level, it's in the intro. When you teleport the first time, I wonder what to do with the block. I thought I could teleport with it, so I brang it to the center area where you spawn and I killed myself. I guess I couldn't. So I spawned back, but the block was in the way. That's how I saw both worlds kind of.
Not really a big problem.

Anyways, now it's time I rate your level.

Length: 5/5 (This was a long level, and it wasn't an RPG :O)
Creativity: 5/5 (Materials intended were great and so were the stickers)
Corner Editing: 5/5 (The Corners were round and the design was great.)
Theme: 5/5 (You're awesome with landscape and mechanics!)
Story: N/A (I thought I was going to rate you here. )

Total: 25/20!!!
That's more than a PERFECT Score, that's BEYOND! (I added a +5)

I gave you 5 stars :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart! <3

Until we meet again,

@Spark:

You know the elevator thing I learned? It's similar to that, but more complex.

Yeah, you are on the right track :-D There was a lot more to keep track of than there is with the elevator, because in sections with multiple portals, you need to have all of the other portals come back to you when you go and activate a different one, so that led to a much larger headache than any elevator has caused me, plus I also had to track the portals appearing and disappearing in the background. The other issue was tracking the blocks as they moved around in the background and foreground.

You mentioned the puzzle at the end would be difficult, but I found it rather easy.

That is WONDERFUL to hear! I would love to hear more people saying that they weren't irritated by it! Maybe there is hope that the level won't be rated badly by the general LBP population :-D

It's also good to hear that the puzzle wasn't too hard, but the level still felt long enough. It is basically impossible for me to gage the length of the level since I designed it all, so I know exactly what you need to do. This means that I fly through the level every time, but it still takes me maybe 4 to 5 minutes if I just dash through. My wife took about 18 minutes for her first full playthrough, but she had her fun trying to break stuff (but she had also played part of the level before), so that gave a good indication that the level was hopefully a good length.

What I liked about the puzzle is that you can see the puzzle in the background. Keeping track of two areas was idealistic. Very nice!

When building the level, I especially liked having dynamic things in the background. So it began with the simple action of lowering winched sponges, and ended with a giant waterwheel. Also, seeing the blocks in the position that they are in in the background felt good to me as a creator. It made it so I felt like the player could keep track of things. On a bad note, it sucked up a LOT of thermo.

Not really a big problem.

Oddly enough, it is great to hear that that is your only problem. I'm sorry that it happened, but there were so many issues that I was working out all day today and yesterday that I was worried that some nasty issue might show its face. It's good to hear that the only thing was the block being pulled in front of a save point (even though it sucks that that is an issue).

Thank you so much for playing the level, and also for taking the time to write such detailed feedback. It is literally a huge relief to hear that you liked the level so much because I was more worried about this level than any level I have ever made because of the difficulty.

Wow! The brand new puzzle technique in here is superb. The way the background and foreground have the noticeable landmarks as well just make it seem so well thought out.

Woo-hoo! I'm glad to hear that you like it! I had thought about giving the player something that could kill them so that they could easily kill themselves without needing to open the popit, but I decided that I didn't want that because I didn't want the player to accidentally kill themselves and ending up somewhere in the background (which could get very confusing and irritating). The only way to die is to ride into the waterwheel, and I actually built some tech into that so that you won't end up in the background if you do it

The gameplay is revolutionary for the creators (although I think I've only just figured out how it is done, I don't think I'd be able to do it very well).

You could probably make a decent guess as to how it is done, but my guess is that it is a tad bit harder than you might initially think. When I was imagining the level at first, I thought that it would be ridiculously simple, but when I started building it, there ended up being a lot of tech to keep track of. I was actually having to use a pen and papar to track it, which I haven't done since Now and Then.

The fact that there is no lag is a godsend!

I am seriously not sure why there is no lag. When I added the Water Wheel in create mode, then Create Mode began to lag which was a huge worry for me. By the time I finished the level, this was the laggiest level IN CREATE MODE that I had ever made! Boy was I thrilled when I entered Play mode every time and it didn't lag! I just can't believe it or understand. My only guess is that there is a lot of lag in Create because of all of the wires, but none in Play because 95% of the tech is emitters/Mag Switches, so there aren't any moving parts in the tech (which is what causes lag).

I loved the boxes being moved to and from the different planes and that you actually see it appear is awesome!

I'm so happy that you noticed that! I haven't heard anyone mention that specifically yet, and that was probably my favorite thing about the level. I was hoping that at first players would notice the block had moved in the background and be like "Huh! No way..." Then they would go back to the background and move it again and check to see if it moved in and when they saw it did that would really be excited :-D Obviously, I couldn't account for everywhere that the player might move the block, but I just guessed what locations they would leave it based off of the fact that they would probably leave it by an obstacle or on a platform or switch. There are a lot of locations that are tracked.

The best part of it all is that you've made it simple for the player and it really is. Just hold retry. That's it; change between the planes.

I'm so glad that you liked that! I was more than a little worried that people wouldn't like the idea of needing to retry all of the time, but I hoped that it was presented in such a way that it would seem fun rather than tedious.

Thank you to much for playing and for leaving the detailed feedback!

@B3:

I really appreciate that you would still give the level 5 stars and a heart even though you couldn't finish it B3! It means a lot that you would still consider what went into the level and that it is supposed to be challenging! Thanks!

@Silver39:

It's actually not that difficult.

It's good to hear that you didn't have that hard of a time :-D

I was a little dissapointed with only 3 puzzles. But the amount of logic must be tremendous, so I guess that's a good excuse.

I had planned on having 4 puzzles (and even a boss!) when I began the 3rd puzzle, but by the end of the 3rd puzzle there was no thermo left to do anything. I apologize tat there weren't as many puzzles as you had hoped for, but the PSP thermo just wouldn't allow it. Maybe I will make a sequel some day if this one does well...

Hey poo!
here's some feed to give back.

The visuals are well polished for a level based solely on gameplay, and it must of been so annoying to have to make everything twice with one thin.
The gameplay was amazing and very original. It was really fun trying to work out how to get through it. Sometimes I found myself going straight back to the place that i'd just been to, just to move a block slightly one way or the other!
The mechanisms are very advanced even for you, and I'm still wondering how you got both blocks to move(one in the foreground and one on the thin layer in the background, I think you know what I mean).
Overall a great level!:star::star::star::star::star: and a <3!

@TheForgotten:

Thanks for the kind feedback TheForgotten!

it must of been so annoying to have to make everything twice with one thin.

It was both annoying and exciting. In one way it felt like the level would never be finished because I had to keep building everything twice (and PSP crashes were extra annoying because of it). On the other hand, it was super exciting because I always love trying new ideas. Whenever I would build a section, it was a blast to go back and forth between the foreground and background and see the game mechanic in practice. The annoyingness of it all paid off though :-D

Sometimes I found myself going straight back to the place that i'd just been to, just to move a block slightly one way or the other!
The mechanisms are very advanced even for you, and I'm still wondering how you got both blocks to move(one in the foreground and one on the thin layer in the background, I think you know what I mean).

It makes me so happy to hear you say this. I'm sure that there are plenty of people who won't even notice that the blocks have been moved in the background when you move them and then transport to the foreground, but for those who noticed it, I hoped that they would get a kick out of it. I actually hadn't planned on going in detail with it as I did, but when I tried out the mechanic and had my wife try it (without telling her about the mechanic), she loved the way the block moved in the background, so I decided to apply it as much as possible. I couldn't track the block perfectly because it would end up taking ridiculous amounts of tech, but I tried to track the block to any important point that the player might move it to. Thanks so much for mentioning that you enjoyed that aspect of the level :-)

Thanks so much for playing the level and for leaving feedback!

This level really is unique, original, amazing and suprising! At some points i thought: "No, he didnt plan this! This is impossible!" But the puzzles worked out so great and its so satisfying to complete them. I had to rethink my solutions at some points but it was never annoying. This really is a milestone in LBP PSP history! Hi, Poo! you mentioned, that you make new level with completely new idea, but I didn't think that you have such genius idea and you'll create so amazing level. WOW!!! You combined Poo's original level design with great puzzles mechanics and created outstanding adventure! I love it! I love puzzles and arcade games like "Braid", "Portal" and so on and you made excellent gift for me! I played this level with twice fun - as Poo's new level and as very nice and smart puzzle. Right now I played it 3 times and will play more for understanding all it parts mechanics. Amazing work, Poo! You surprise me and gladdened me much! All stars from community moon are yours! Please find really big bag for it! And then you will able to create you own star Universe

Here are some pictures for you in better quality (maybe you''ll find them useful):

It is great to have you back from your hiatus! I really missed having you around the PSP side of things!

At some points i thought: "No, he didnt plan this! This is impossible!" But the puzzles worked out so great and its so satisfying to complete them.

It's awesome to hear that you got a sense of satisfaction from solving the puzzles. When I had Taffey test the level for me (*Thanks Taffey!*), we chatted a bit about the third puzzle and how it could be too difficult for some. We talked about how adding a hint to let the player know to use the water wheel to move the blocks might be a good thing, but in the end it was decided to leave it the way it is, because there is that fun satisfaction of sliding the block into the water wheel for the first time and seeing it get carried over to the ramp and dropped off and having the light turn on in your head as to what the next step is.

I'm very happy that you got a sense of satisfaction from the level, and also that you were willing to push through to figure out the solution even though you may have felt like I was crazy at times

I really appreciate your kind words, and thanks so much for checking out the level and leaving feedback! So, when will we be seeing another awesome level from you and have the Featured Levels page covered in your new levels like old times?

Yeah Yeah... the old times... where i got time

You may be happy to hear that i plan to enter the vehicle contest. Therefore i paused the creation of my other level. I hope i find the time in the next days to work on my entry a little bit more. The ideas for the vehicles are there, but there are many things that need to be done and thought of.

(NOTE: I reply to Arrestor below my reply to Domik)

@Domik:

First of all, I am very jealous of that incredible camera you have Domik! My wife and I have a very nice camera that we LOVE, but those pictures that you took actually look better than the PSP screen! Incredible stuff :-) Thanks so much (they have been added to my initial post on this thread and you have been thanked in the post).

Normally I like to quote people in my replies, but you were so nice that I would feel like I had a big head if I quoted you, so I will just reply directly without quotes :-D

I'm so happy that you liked the level! And thanks so much for playing it so many times already :-) It really does bring a smile to my face to know that you enjoyed it enough to want to play it more than once! I was seriously worried that I would receive some very negative feedback on this level since it is very different from my previous levels, and it is also challenging, so it is AWESOME to hear that you really liked it!

All stars from community moon are yours! Please find really big bag for it! And then you will able to create you own star Universe

Man, that is an EPIC quote! It was worth making the level just to hear that :-D Thanks so much Domik!

Woo-hoo! That is AWESOME news! It would be incredible to see and entry from you. I am very excited to see what people come up with, and I am also super excited to see your next level, so the combination just about maxes out my anticipation detector.

Hey there AFP!,

This level had a very genius concept and design, as we'd all expect from you. Now and Then was a hit and now you literally smack us in the face with this new level. It had the same type of scenery from Now and Then so I'm guessing you wanted people to remember how really awesome you design your levels. You take RPG's to a whole new level experience in LBP PSP. Althought the level felt pretty short, people have to notice the work that you must have put into this level.

It felt really great to have that "Portal" feel into a level. The retrying was annoying but you actually made a use for it. Most people don't even care about the retry feature being built into levels. We finally see your avatar in a level. Sure the character was not really amazing, but the whole level makes up for it. Most people will get frustrated if they do not know what they were doing. We do have a huge audience of kids in LBP, that probably wouldn't understand how to play this level. But, you do explain things very well enough for people to understand.

Everytime I play your levels, I would never ever ask the question "What am I suppose to do?" The feeling of an open world is great and is a hard thing to potray in a level. Here and There made me actually ask myself, " Why am I here when I should be over there? How do I over there from here?" I wouldn't be suprised if you made The DeLorean.
I basically scream like a little girl everytime you make a new level. Embarassing? No, it's a natural reaction. As we all expected, another Amazing level from AFP.

Thanks so much for all of the feedback TheNerd! It's GREAT to hear that you enjoyed the level :-D

It had the same type of scenery from Now and Then so I'm guessing you wanted people to remember how really awesome you design your levels.

LOL, thanks for the compliment :-D The level didn't really require a specific setting, so I figured that I would do a shout out back to the world of Now and Then. I especially wanted to since the level is called Here and There. The level is meant to be a sort of spiritual successor to Now and Then, so even though they are unrelated in story, they are meant to be related in style.

Althought the level felt pretty short, people have to notice the work that you must have put into this level.

I can certainly see how you would feel that the level is short. I wanted it to be much longer, but designing the entire level twice, both times with detailed backgrounds that need to represent the other background, took up a lot of thermo. Plus tracking the boxes as you move them and also building in the tech for the portals took plenty of thermo. The level was maxed out, so it is as along as it can be. From watching my wife play, and hearing other people's comments, it sounds like the level usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes on a first playthrough, so that seems pretty good (maybe even a little long) for a PSP level.

The retrying was annoying but you actually made a use for it. Most people don't even care about the retry feature being built into levels.

You're actually the first person that has mentioned the use of "retry". I expected people to be calling for my head on a platter because I would demand them to actually manually kill themselves like that, but it was just the best way to handle it in this level (I have many reasons for it), and I hoped that some people would think that it made it feel unique. Fortunately I haven't heard many complaints, so I may get to keep my head.

Thanks so much for playing the level and for leaving so much feedback!

This level is "okay", I mean, it's sorta innovative I guess.. Who is this guy named Amazing Poo Poo? Never heard of him.
Just kidding man!!!!
I had you going didn't I? So, what can I say about this level that hasn't already been said in the last 5 pages of feedback, hmmm. Well, I didn't think it was short. It really does have you scrutinizing the background for clues. Was the choice of motif based on trying to tie in the relation to Now and then? I mean, I almost think it would have been easier to have made it like a city landscape. Like, you're on this building, but you need to get on that building, and over to that bridge, I dunno, just ignore me, my minds wandering now. And for some reason, I thought of the movie Ground Hog day. You remember that movie where the guy keeps having dejavu. You know, like you have the feeling you're repeating the same day over and over, but it changes a little everytime. Um, yeah, anyway, this level rocks, and I don't mind repeating THAT over and over. 5 stars

Hey! I know you!!! You're that guy who has the level on page 1 of highest rated! Holy crap!!! Thanks for checking out my level and leaving feedback!!!!

Well, I didn't think it was short.

Woo-hoo! It's good to hear you say that :-D I think that more people have said that it didn't feel too short, but I have still had plenty of people say that they felt it was too short. I fear that if it had had another even more challenging puzzle, then it would have taken the player more like 25 to 30 minutes to complete, and that would be one long PSP level!

Was the choice of motif based on trying to tie in the relation to Now and then? I mean, I almost think it would have been easier to have made it like a city landscape. Like, you're on this building, but you need to get on that building, and over to that bridge

Yes, the idea was to make it feel like Now and Then. The idea of a city based Here and There is an interesting concept. I am pretty darn bad at creating cities that actually feel alive. I've actually tried on multiple occasions. Well, in my defense, I think that it is a hard thing to do and most people don't pull it off well, but I usually shy away from cities. However, if you are on the rooftops it might actually work well... hmmm....

I thought of the movie Ground Hog day. You remember that movie where the guy keeps having dejavu. You know, like you have the feeling you're repeating the same day over and over, but it changes a little everytime.

I love that movie! I can see how this would remind you of it since you are killing yourself over and over, but I wouldn't have ever thought of drawing a parallel :-D

Another technical masterpiece Poo!!

I just got a chance to play this tonight and it is so cool. You always amaze me with how you use checkpoints to move the player to different places but this is just incredible. I can't really say what has not been said already, so I'll just say thanks for making this level.

You know, I have noticed that your favorite wood material is just plain basic wood. That's cool, I find myself using it a lot too.

It's great to hear that you enjoyed the level! I guess you are right about me loving to move checkpoints around :-) I have avoided doing it after Lost at Sea because so many people had complained about the fact that I forced the player to die in both Lost at Sea and Now and Then, but then I heard so many people say that those were their favorite levels, so I decide to try it out again in a totally new way. The response has been basically 100% positive, so maybe it is ok to do this on some levels :-D

Yeah... I've got no excuse. I just love the look of grass on top of simple wood. It makes me think of the Gardens on PS3 :-)

Hey poo! I just played your level (yeah, I stumbled upon it during my Community Sweep) and I have to say that it is hands-down a great kickoff for summer time Creations! The mechanisms you used were great, and the difficulty was amazing! I had quite a good time trying to finish the level (which I did!), so bonus points on the challenge!

how do you send stuff to beta testers when you cant lock levels

I wait until one of the people who is willing to test is on LBPC, and then I contact them and see if they are up for testing. If they yes, then I publish the level, tell them it is published and ask them to tell me as soon as they download it. When I get a message back from them I immediately delete the level, so the level only ends up being published for around 30 seconds to a minute, making it so most likely no one will even see it, but if they do, it will only be 1 or 2 people.

It's certainly not as good as the locked level method on PS3, but it works!

ps hows destiny going

It was coming along fine before I began work on Here and There. I had an intro made, I had dialog chains built up to leaving the ship, and I had the functionality built in for flying to the first planet. I also had a town (with no residents) built into the first planet. The reason that I decided to go onto Here and There was that I was afraid that Destiny 2 was feeling too much like Destiny (which is probably good since it is a sequel), and I didn't want to just do the same thing twice in a row because I really like trying new things out. But not to fear, I'm pretty sure that my next level will be destiny 2 since I am already well into it.

pps that level sounds awesome

Thanks!

Hi-

I finally got a chance to play this and I'm very glad that I did. This level, like all of your others, had an ingeniously innovative new concept that blows my mind! The idea of teleporting is very cool, and it's astounding how you have got the whole perspective thing with the scenery downpat. Just like in Destiny, the mechanics behind this level must be amazing. I like how the visuals were the same as Now and Then, and it's neat how you tied the levels together by using the similar names, Here and There/Now and Then. Overall, Poo has released another crazily cool level that I reccomend everyone with LBP PSP to play.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and, of course, <3ed the level.

Thanks so much for the feedback :-) It's awesome that you would check out the video and give impressions like that even though you don't have a PSP! I figured that the name of the level "Here and There" would make perfect sense once you were able to see the level in action :-D

As for the recording, I am not sure that JHKthree is still recording videos for PSP. He recorded my first two levels near the end of 2009/start of 2010, but after that he never recorded my others. I actually requested to have my 3rd level recorded, but never heard back, and I haven't really seen other people getting levels recorded by him in a while.

As I mentioned to you via VM, I am currently living in China. China's government blocks websites such as Twitter, Youtube, and facebook for the entire country, so I have been unable to view any of the level videos that have been made for my levels

Thanks again for the feedback!

While I would love videos from him, I don't want to bug him. I'm sure that he has his reasons for not recording, and he knows that there is a high demand on the PSP side of things if he is interested. There are awesome people like Domik and SirPaper who are willing to record from time to time, and that is just fine with me :-) Really, I would prefer to get my levels that haven't been recorded recorded (yeah, I meant to write it twice) instead of recording this one again anyway.

I really appreciate your offer to help, but I don't want to bother him since I have already asked once :-) I am happy to have the video that SirPaper made for me :-D

Hey amazing poo that just happens to fly,

Congratulations on another Spotlight! You are now officially a living legend.

First, I'm sorry I couldn't playtest your level. My life was radically changing the time you asked, and as much as I wanted to help out, I couldn't. Anyhoo, I eventually played it, and boy oh boy, you popped my brain into smithereens with a combination of utter shock that something like this could exist and trying to figure out how everything works. In other words, you brought back my reactions with Now and Then all over again!

I am so honored to be in a company of a remarkable creator like yourself who's always pushing the boundaries of possibilities on something as limited as the PSP. I know many berate it for its lack of processing power and bugs associated with this limitation, but you show that gameplay-wise, this isn't a problem at all. In fact, and Taffey agrees with this from our LBP PS3 chat hehe, in some ways PSP levels excel in gameplay over PS3 levels because creators can't rely as much on pretty visuals to create an awesome level. Here and There, and pretty much all your other levels, is a testament to this idea, and I personally thank you for kicking skepticism in the butt!

Keep up the superb work flyingpoo! You've earned your "amazing" title!

Popping into the background,
jc

Thanks so much for the congratulations and/or compliments! It's awesome that we have a community who is so supportive of eachother :-D

@Jeffcu28:

Woo-hoo! It's great to hear from you Jeff! Obviously, I have been chatting with you for other reasons, but it is great to hear what you think of Here and There.

First, I'm sorry I couldn't playtest your level. My life was radically changing the time you asked, and as much as I wanted to help out, I couldn't.

I completely understand why you couldn't play test the level or give feedback up until now :-) I'm glad that things are going so well for you and you have graduated and gotten to spend time with family.

In other words, you brought back my reactions with Now and Then all over again!

It's great to hear that it made you feel that way. I wanted it to feel familiar in that sense, but at the same time, different :-) It sounds like it might have worked :-D

You were way too nice in the following paragraph, so I can't even really reply to that except by saying thank you There was one thing I wanted to reply to though:

In fact, and Taffey agrees with this from our LBP PS3 chat hehe, in some ways PSP levels excel in gameplay over PS3 levels because creators can't rely as much on pretty visuals to create an awesome level.

I posted about this somewhere on the PSP forums here at LBPC (maybe on the thread about level quality improving), and agreed with this 100%. Really, the only major downside for me on PSP is the thermo, but that isn't really something that can be changed and I think that Cambridge gave us a good amount even though it would be nice to have more. Other than thermo, the limitations that we have seem to push us to make even better levels. Sure, the graphics aren't nearly as good, and we don't have all of the same tools, but the gameplay is the same.

You often hear people on PS3 talking about the good old days without water and without paintanators or all the glitches and such... well, we are sort of living those good old days. I think that PSP is really a testament to how LBP PS3 may have evolved if it hadn't gained the new tools, hadn't had H4H, etc... and I really like the way it is. Sometimes I ask myself why I would ever move back to creating on the PS3. There is so much support on PSP, and on PS3 I would just make a level, it would be on page one of cool pages for a week, and then it would fall into oblivion. PSP is a different story. Ok, I am going to stop talking about this now

Thanks so much for the feedback Jeff! It is always a pleasure to hear from you :-)

Hidy Ho nosemomkey (awesome name!),

Thanks so much for checking out the level and for leaving feedback. I am sorry that it was too hard for you, but according to your message you seemed to have still enjoyed the level :-)

The good news is that SirPaper (and maybe Jeffcu... I think that he may have recorded a video of the level for the Community Spotlight) recorded video of the level. I have a video link in the original post of this thread, so if you are interested in getting some hints about how to finis (or just outright seeing the solution), then you can watch that.

Either way, I really appreciate that you would play. I am sorry that you couldn't finish but it's good to hear that you understand that the level is meant to be hard.

Thanks so much for playing!

Hey, amazingflyingpoo! I just played your Now and Then level, and your Here and There level too! What I can say though... is WOW! You totally reach new limits to what the create mode can do! I loved trying to work out what to do, and also how on Earth you managed to pull it off! Your levels are great inspiration to me as newbie, so thanks for making some awesome levels! 2010-07-02 00:24:00

@CeruleanSky:

Hidy Ho CeruleanSky! I don't know if we have chatted on here before so I wanted to start off by saying hello :-) I see that you are new on LBPC and you call yourself a newbie, so I assume that you are pretty new to LBP PSP. It's great to have you on the PSP side of things!

Thanks so much for checking out my levels! It's great to hear that you enjoyed them so much and felt that they were unique.

I loved trying to work out what to do, and also how on Earth you managed to pull it off!

I'm glad that you enjoy trying to figure out how to solve puzzles/progress through the levels. When I made Now and Then (my first PSP level), I was a bit worried that people would get stuck because back on the PS3, some people tended to not like my RPG style because they didn't like to read and think. The PSP community seems a lot different though, they actually seem intelligent :-) It might have to do with the fact that LBP PSP is a bit harder to get online, so we don't have as many young kids playing.

Anyway, I have gradually made my levels harder and harder since Now and Then (with the exception of A Dingo Down Under), and people seem to still be enjoying them which is fantastic because I enjoy creating a challenge! I can't believe how well Here and There has performed because I was sure it would do terribly since I intentionally made that level require a lot of thought.

I think that this says a lot for the PSP community. I think that we consist of a much older and more intelligent audience who enjoys levels that require thought rather than copycat survival challenges :-) Maybe I will make a thread about that today

Anyway, thanks so much for checking out my levels and for leaving feedback!

Nothing better to come back to the LBP PSP community than playing a level from amazingflyingpoo. It's always fascinating to see how you keep pushing the limits of the Editor. From the very title, I already knew I would find something huge, but as usual I didn't check the description or pictures, didn't want to spoil the surprise.

And glad I did. Another mindblowing masterpiece from you. I cannot thank you enough. I always say the same, but I mean it. On the early days of LBP PSP, people kept complaining about how useless the Editor was, how little you could do compared to the PS3... There is people who still think that it's a worthless tool, actually. And yet, creators like you keep showing that it's possible to do amazing and inspiring stuff.

Like most of your levels, it's frightening to think about the hidden logic and mechanisms that you have built.

My only complain is about the visuals. Although revisiting the quirky look from your other levels makes me feel like home, I think this whole idea of teleports would have benefited of a futuristic look (something like TRON).

Have you played "Crush"? It's a puzzle by SEGA for the PSP and somehow the gameplay of your level reminds me of that, even if they are different. But it also plays with the sense of space and dimensions. In a way, I really think this is your finest level yet. Maybe not the most fun or replayable or interesting, but the concept is fascinating enough. You know some of the unique puzzles of PSP? Echochrome, Crush, Practical IQ... "Here And There" fits with this cathegory.

I'm very happy that it's having such a great reception. It's a hard level, dare I say even obscure. There's no plot, there are no hints, there are no other characters to interact with. I could understand if someone said the setting is boring. You're alone, on your own, clueless, trying to decypher the misteries of that portals, going back and forth until you make the right steps in the right order. It's the type of level that most people would quit after a couple of tries, and yet you capture us with a perfect execution.

Once again, congratulations!

Woo-hoo! Thanks so much for the feedback Lleonard! It is always great to get feedback from you since you are one of the very best authors on LBP PSP, and you always have very helpful feedback where you cover the good and the bad of my levels :-D

Thanks so much for complimenting my use of mechanics on the level. I'd feel bad quoting it since you were so nice, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate it :-) I had more fun implementing the mechanics of this level then I have any other mechanic I have ever made. It was so much fun creating the foreground and background and then making it so that you could transport between the two :-)

Yeah, this is a very viable criticism. The mechanic doesn't match the scenery very well I guess. I wanted to make this feel like a sort of spiritual successor to Now and Then, and my wife came up with the name Here and There when I described the mechanic to her. After having the name relate to Now and Then and having the mechanic be sort of an evolution from Now and Then, I just had to make it based in the same world :-) Perhaps it wasn't the best choice, but oh well I appreciate the honest feedback on that point.

I have not played crush, but I have played the demo for Echochrome multiple times. I really loved the concept of that level. From what I understand, Crush is much like the newer Paper Mario on Wii. If that is correct then I can certainly see how Here and There would make you think of that because I sort of felt the same way about the level :-) I love games/levels that make you think of things differently then you are used to, and that was sort of the goal of this level.

This is awesome to hear.I am so happy that you enjoyed it that much. My wife warned me when she play tested it that the replay value may be pretty bad, but I was thoroughly expecting to have more problems with the level then that. I sort of thought that since the level is actually hard that the ratings would be terrible. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the incredible reception that the level has gotten. Even people who cannot finish have said that they loved it and gave it 5 stars! I never thought that I would hear a number of people tell me that they couldn't finish a level of mine but gave it 5 stars because they enjoyed it!

Yeah, I guess that this is what I was talking about just above this. I really think that one of the great aspects of the PSP community is that we have a more mature audience. I mean is just plain and simple has to be the truth. The game defaults to 1 star, so people must be intentionally rating it 5 stars, and I'm sure that a 4 to 6 year old who gets stuck in the level would not go through the trouble of rating it well. On PS3 I am confident that this level would have a hard time pulling off anything higher than a 3 star rating. This level has really opened my eyes that the community can enjoy a genuinely hard level :-)

Thanks so much for the feedback Lleonard! It is much appreciated :-D

Yes, Crush and Paper Mario Wii share similar concepts, although Crush is much more puzzle-based. I love games that defy your logic and make you think in a different way, and that's just what I found in Here & There. By the way, your wife couldn't have suggested a better name, it's perfect.

I think that because the PSP has fewer players, there are also fewer casual players and a more dedicated LBP fanbase. That's probably why hard levels are more popular on the PSP than the PS3. Also, with LBP PSP you can take the levels anywhere you want, and you don't have to be on-line, thus your playing time is not as limited as in the PS3. It's funny because a handheld is in theory more fitting for casual, on-the-go experiences but with LBP it's the other way around, IMHO. Anyway, it makes me very happy to see levels like this having great receptions, too.

@youstink78:

Hidy Ho youstink! I don't think that we have had the pleasure of crossing paths before so let me start off by saying hello :-) And thanks for the friends request, it is great to have you as a friend :-D

I think that the level probably took about a month to build. It could have been a little longer or a bit shorter, but that sounds about right.

I came up with the concept one day while my wife and I were walking to school. I had always wanted to use the idea of having the stuff in the background come to the foreground, but I couldn't figure out a good way to make it into an interesting level. After I came up with the concept for Here and There and my wife came up with a name, I immediately put Destiny 2 on hold and dove right into Here and There because I was so excited about it. I worked on it a lot from then on out because I had a blast building it.

Thanks for the message and for checking out my level :-)
