Something I am fascinated by...

...is the concept of emergent behaviour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergent_behaviour). The short version, roughly: emergent behaviour is what happens when complex systems create unpredictable (in the sense that they could not be predicted from original inputs) but (usually) fairly regular or popular behaviour. In general terms, the flocking of birds or fish is considered emergent. In LBP, there have been two major sets of emergent behaviour that really stand out: the incredible proliferation of logic schemes, and the usage of grabbable material in ceilings as ways to get over obstacles by swinging and regrabbing. I'm incredibly eager to see what emergent behaviours will arise from the new features in LBP2. Will the calculator of LBP be upgraded to actual computer-esque microchip layouts with the new logic system? Will sackbots become less NPC-type things and truly interactive objects in their own right? I don't know. But it'll be exciting to see. | 2010-06-13 09:09:00 Author: roux- Posts: 379 |
It's definately something to think about. I agree with the grabbable material on the ceiling being emergent (I learned a new word) I wonder what things in LBP2 will be emergent? *thinks hard* Nope, sorry. Very hard to think of some, for some reason. | 2010-06-13 09:29:00 Author: talbot-trembler Posts: 1114 |
Well that's sort of the point of emergent behaviour. If it's predictable from your starting premise, it's not emergent. | 2010-06-13 09:36:00 Author: roux- Posts: 379 |
..... ****! I spent 10 minutes of my life thinking about it! I could have done.... actually, I have nothing else to do... | 2010-06-13 09:43:00 Author: talbot-trembler Posts: 1114 |
Believe me I know the feeling. I should be sleeping but I have a rather exciting day tomorrow and am too nervous grar. | 2010-06-13 09:46:00 Author: roux- Posts: 379 |
Hmm, what about attaching sackbots to strings and using them as a way to get across a dangerous ledge? Like balls of grabbable material are used now. It could be used in a horror level maybe? | 2010-06-15 16:28:00 Author: WilsonLBP Posts: 128 |
Hmm, that's kinda cool. Nice idea! | 2010-06-15 16:40:00 Author: talbot-trembler Posts: 1114 |
floaty fluffy jumps or falling sackbot survivals? | 2010-06-15 16:55:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
In LBP, there have been two major sets of emergent behaviour that really stand out: the incredible proliferation of logic schemes, and the usage of grabbable material in ceilings as ways to get over obstacles by swinging and regrabbing. I'm not convinced that either of those actually qualify as emergent behaviours, as neither are really unpredictable patterns. One was perfectly predictable due to the nature of the game, and the other is just a simple gameplay mechanic that has become commonplace - again, simple gamplay mechanics being copied is arguably quite a predictable event in a system. Now, the community aspect of the game and the trends there that have evolved and developed over the months... that counts, but the less said about that the better! | 2010-06-15 17:06:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I dont know what that word means but material change sackbots from wood to pink floaty and jump on them to get across a gap. | 2010-06-15 18:13:00 Author: CheesyDemon Posts: 170 |

I'd have to agree with RTM, (what I was thinking before I read his post...), and only two? Now spam survival shark, hotel, bomb, train levels... I do see a plethora of grappling hook survivals on the horizon though...think I call it "Cliffhanger". | 2010-06-15 18:55:00 Author: Gravel Posts: 1308 |

I'm not convinced that either of those actually qualify as emergent behaviours ... and the other is just a simple gameplay mechanic that has become commonplace MM designers have been quoted as saying the roof-swinging was unpredictable.. but I do see where you're coming from. Now, the community aspect of the game and the trends there that have evolved and developed over the months... that counts, but the less said about that the better! I think it's arguable that MM could/should have been able to predict the existence of H4H and corrected for it. | 2010-06-15 19:58:00 Author: roux- Posts: 379 |
