Just make a piece of gas that is as thick as the laser's light.

If you want the laser to be deadly when it turns on, I'll have to make something next time I'm in the game.

yep i need something like the laser is active with gas but their going to be a sequence to turn it off so i need something that can be turned off with the gas2010-06-14 03:17:00

I could try to explain what I'd do: Use an emitter, that emitts the gas with the activation of the laser. Now the tricky part: when the laser is turned on and you wanna turn it off, you could move the emitter and let it emitt again its gas (this time somewhere, where it won't bother you). If the emitter setting is "1 at a time" (or what's it called) the original gas will vanish. The emitter moves back and we can start again. I think that technique is called "demitting". Get the picture?

@all: I have a question though: Can you avoid these swamp sounds from gas? I find them very disturbing if not in a jungle setting...

Have a piece of gas with a mag key on it emitted at regular intervals. Have a mag switch attached to the body of your laser, so that when the gas is emitted, the light is turned on. Then, when the gas disappears, the light turns off. The problem with this is when the laser moves - the gas will not move with the laser. If you want to have a moving laser emit gas, make sure it stops when the gas is emitted. Hope this helps!2010-06-14 13:21:00

@Holguin: Yeh, that's easier, but you can't shut it off on command?!? Though for regular intervalls, that's a good idea, thx.
<--- makes a note

After some thinking: You could block the emitter (though something ungasy would have to be emitted as well but is blocked so nothing happens), so you could stop the intervalls during an off state. Though it'll need clever design and carefull synchronizing to make it seamless...

Just set the emitter to emit every 0.1 seconds with a lifespan of 0.1 seconds. Connect your logic for turning off the laser to the emitter and set it to on/off. Then when the laser is turned off, the last emitted gas/beam will despawn after 0.1 seconds.2010-06-14 21:19:00

Gwurhe, I never found that workaround very convincing....but it'd sure work.

Or you could use gas driven by a piston

Easy and sufficient. Cool. And since gas is intangible, you can litarlly hide it inside the scenerie. Hence, on a moving mech for example it could be tricky, hiding something long and thin.

well, less hiding but getting it out of the way of any sackperson.

Yeah, for a compact space it might not be as effective as an emitter but both are simple and useful to know, now next question

You mean the computer bit?
