Trouble in Chinatown - beta testers required! )Images now visible)

Archive: 16 posts

Hello! Keldur and I have been working on a level for the past week (still with only a working title) - we worked so fast that we've sort of ground to a halt - I know I'm completely drained of ideas. Some feedback on what we have already would be great.

Here's some images to show you a bit of what we've done so far:

If you're interested in giving us some detailed feedback, please send a message to me personally, as the beta level, and the lockbox that contains its key, are on my profile.

Thanks!

Hey man Got around to testing it out for ya, here's your feedback!

Awesome, awesome fun lol. The level's got some fantastic game play! I was sad to see it unfinished lol because I wanted it to keep going. My favorite part was the part in the last picture, where you turn that wheel to change the fire balls path. very innovative. I would, however, like to see that mechanic elaborated on. I think you guys have got the workings of a great puzzle in place there, and maybe if you had a couple of those wheels, with and maybe had to time the turns they make, you could end up with a brilliant puzzle.

The previous sections were also really good! I thought the part in the 2nd picture is also a really neat challenge, but it's too easy of an obstacle to pass, at least in comparison to the rest of the level. maybe if some of the fire pieces were moving it would be a little more challenging and rewarding area to play through.

There were some great hidden prize bubbles, I think I managed to find most of them. I missed the one on the tree first time I played lol, but managed to spot it the next time. I thought the 2x player challenge was a little too simple, but you don't have much space to work with in that area... so it's a nice addition lol. a more complex one later down the road would be a welcome addition

Visually the level is bang on. You guys are doing a great job decorating and stickering. I'm really quite envious lol. The level has a great look to it, and I can't really think of anything I've seen before that looks like it. One thing I could suggest is some custom switches instead of the 2 way ones, which would maintain the brilliant Chinese atmosphere.

The audio, however, still doesn't match lol. Especially the first song (tricky business I think it's called). You gotta change that one lol. In brutal honesty, I found it really messed with the level's atmosphere. I know the level is Chinese, but the islands theme would still fit a lot better than that one, I think.

I know it's a beta level so I can't really say much about me finding dark matter, but I found a lot of dark matter lol. I played through the level a second time with a friend, and whenever we were far apart the camera often zoomed out and showed us some DM I'm sure it will be fixed by the time the level is done though.

Finally, the last thing I've got to say is I think the last picture you have posted up there needs an additional checkpoint, next to the switch lol. the previous one is pretty far back, and that over-and-under jump you've got there, is pretty tricky lol. dying there sends you pretty far back so an additional checkpoint would be nice

Whew! Besides all that, you're good lol. But seriously, great level Holguin and Keldur. I can't wait to see it when it's completely finished. It was a blast to play

Thanks man! Awesome feedback - I kinda wasn't happy with tricky business at the start either, that will probably be changed - it's just a filler for now (you wouldn't have any idea as to what music would sound good? Maybe rock the jungle or whatever it's called?). Your ideas about moving flames in the grabby conveyor are excellent, I think we'll definitely be using that! As for building on the wheel puzzle, it's a possibility but the roller track is pretty thermo hungry due to the number of stickers and vertices, so it depends what we can come up with, and if we have room.

As for the multiplayer section, we built the tower higher than we needed and couldn't bring ourselves to destroy the scenery to get rid of the empty space, so we put a piddly little x2 thing in the corner. A multiplayer puzzle, possibly implementing the wheels and tracks, is definitely a possibility as an aside later on.

As for DM, it's hard to tuck away in places, particularly in the outside places, but it should all be hidden away by the final. Thanks for the feedback!

I definately liked the level when we played it Holguin, great visuals, but I'd change the music, IMO it didn't fit well with the theme.

The level was pretty fun, I can't wait to see how much times I die when the level is published!

I'd have better feedback if I could remember the level really good, but ATM I'm away from the PS3 and only have my 360 with me.

Finally got around to playing it. It's totally awesome.

My only complaints are the little piece if dissolve that you keep forgetting to delete and the visible PERM switch in the area where platforms are going up-and-down and left-to-right immediately after that.

Also, the sticker switch in the level is a bit funky. There is one spot where you have to hang on the underside of a platform as it moves to the left. Are you not meant to get the bubbles on the fire without scorching sackboy? There is visible DM in the area with rtm's conveyors going left and right. When you divert the roller thingy to the lower path, it knocks over the wall, but the roller gets stuck for a bit.

My last nit-pick is that it's not finished yet. Get on that.

Thx for the feedback Matt. the visible logic, that's my fault , I keep forgetting about that DM at the start of rtm conveyor bridge too lol, shouldn't be too hard to hide that up.

The bubbles in the fire I ended up leaving there, simply because the strings they were attached to kept breaking whenever I or Keldur edited anything glued to the mainframe. We'll string them back up right at the end, hopefully.

The sticker switch is weird - the Chinese tree trunk can't be placed exactly on its shape because the popit cursor isn't over the sticker when it's been picked up. Might have to change it for another sticker.

And yup, we're nearly finished! Keldur's on MW2 though :L so I only did a bit tonight. Just need to put the boss together, make a decent ending (which may as yet involve a puzzle involving shaving cream, I dunno what Keldur thinks of that idea!) and polish up. Thanks for the feedback

Also, people - note that the beta is also the backup, so if you check back regularly you might find that certain stuffs have been added ...

His album was set to private, which was likely unintentional. I informed him of this. Spoiler alert - it looks awesome!
