New level promotion idea: Share Key

Archive: 21 posts

I don't know if this has been proposed before (it's kind of hard to search), but I think I have an idea for a level promotion tactic.

The basic premise is that you put the key for your level in a prize bubble at the start of the level (or maybe it's better at the end).
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18050

"But", you say, "how is having a key inside of the level going to help promote it? What's the point since players are already playing the level, and I'll just put my own level keys at the end so they play my other levels?"

Well, the point is not for you to promote your own levels, but to allow other players to promote it. Say I come across a really well made mech level and want to help it out, I could take the key I've collected from that level and put it in one of my own levels to cross-promote it. Or, I could make a level containing all of the keys I've collected of a particular genre, something like "My favorite platformers" or "Links to great racing levels" and just have the keys there to link to various levels from other creators (in this way it's better than going through a hearted list).

If the practice becomes widespread enough, we could have levels promoting similar levels from other creators, kind of like "Related videos" and "Video responses" on youtube. We could maybe even make a level linking to Community Spotlight levels this way without having to go through hearted lists.

All that creators would have to do is capture their level key after publishing a level, give the object the name of the level, and put it in a prize bubble somewhere in the level where people can collect it if they want. Then someone can take the collected keys and put them in their own levels to help the creators out.

What do you guys think? Is this a good idea?

Awesome idea! That would be absolutely fantastic and then we could compile the spotlights into a single nucleus level with the rest orbiting the key level..

Once again great idea

Not only that, but I'm hoping this would also help leech plays off of the "Cool Levels" pages and onto levels that actually deserve to get more plays, regardless of the 7 days rule.

I think it would also need to have some kind of catchy name that helps get the idea across easier. This way it can catch on with the rest of the LBP crowd and not be limited strictly to LBPC.

That would be awesome if it worked! Problem is getting people to participate. I know that some people do this sort of thing with friends, by cross promoting each others levels. But to expect that the LBP masses would promote complete strangers levels is a little hard to see happening, and I don't know if simply putting your key as a prize would be enough to get it to work.

I think a system would have to be put in place if this was to work... Multiple LBP community websites would have to adopt some sort of new system, where people somehow get each other to advertise their key for them. If the word got out enough, and enough people started to participate, then It might begin to catch on

Yes, it's a very good idea ! :hero:

We could also integrate the keys into our levels. I mean, in the level I'm currently working on, I could make a kind of library (it takes place in a cabaret/hotel, so adding another room is easy) with a collection of keys

I had this idea in mind for my project "A Happy Gadder's Resource Galaxy", which is practically a level to show off others' stuff (Like creations, ideas, logic, level keys), but it is planned for LBP2, so I'd love to see you implement the idea right now, see how good it works, and I'll decide if I should incorperate it in my own level.2010-06-11 21:00:00

Let's say you have a new level that showcases the "uber turbo rocket cheetah(UTRC)" and at the end you got one as a prize, only, it also has an emmiter that generates a key to your level built into the cheetah.
now, evey duplo creator who uses the (UTRC) in a level causes that level to be linked to yours...interesting.

Alright so I've thought up a name, "Share Key" to give to a captured prize bubble key inside of its own level. After all, the idea is that if someone likes the level enough, they'll take and put the key in their level to share it with the LBP world.

I've also come up with a simple little logo to hang at the end of my levels which will be holding the Share Key.

What better character to embody the spirit of sharing than Mr. Molecule?
I looked for a cutout of Mr. Molecule but I didn't find one so I had to make this one myself. Maybe I'll give it away as a prize if I make a level about this whole idea.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like a great idea! I'd love to get involved! Yet I'll have to make a level first...2010-06-13 04:03:00

Sounds like a cool concept but there is something I am unsure about with keys. I once put keys to 2 of my levels in a level, other creators also put their keys in this level so at the end of that level a good few appeared by the creators involved in creating it. I thought that's fine, lalala. Then I made another level and I put the same 2 of my keys into that one but only those two expecting that level to link back to my own two levels. But instead I got links to all the levels in the original level I left my keys. Does this mean that every time one uses a key it links to all possible levels your key was ever mixed with? Is there a max to how many you can link back to? Because if the above is the case and several people linked your level there could be a huge amount of linked levels appearing. I really dislike the fact I can't link my own 2 levels anymore without a whole batch of other ones appearing along side them. I didn't publish the original level so it's impossible for me to get access to deleting the keys and republishing, so yeah, not something I would do if I can't link exclusively back to my own levels from one of my own levels.2010-06-13 20:47:00

I've just tested it out, and it seems that links between levels are only displayed if you collect a level key, otherwise the link doesn't seem to show up for either level. If you've previously collected keys in a level that links to another, they do all seem to show up together at the end though. I don't know if there is a limit to how many levels can be displayed this way, since I can only link at most to 20 levels on my own account. If there is a limit, I would assume that the levels directly linked by the level you just finished will take priority over the others. I'll be able to do some more comprehensive testing when I get more keys from other creators.2010-06-13 21:09:00

7 days is the time you get to get to cool pages, if you got there on the 5th day, you'd have 2 days left to be on Cool Pages,

Yes, I've just published a level called "Share Keys tutorial" under PSN Jirugameshi which explains the basic idea and gives away the Mr. Molecule cutout as a prize (as well as a few decorative boats I made for the level).

Brilliant way to get more plays!

I have several decent 4 star levels, very few of which have more than about 70 plays

It's not that my levels are bad. Far from it. I just find they get lost in the fog of the other 2 million lvls out there
