Rock band 3! Taking it to far?

Archive: 18 posts

So! Rock band 3's been officially announced, and it's attempting to revolutionize the music genre once agan! The 3rd installemet is introducing keyboards, which have 25 keys. Also, the game will introduce a new mode called "Pro mode", which "aimed to bridge the gap between expert rhythm game players and actual musicians." The new guitar controller is said to have 6 strings, and touch sensative pad used for frets.

So, I've been a long time fan of the music game genre. I play real instrumets as well, so this seems really interesting. the game apparantly doubles as a tutor, that can teach you how to play guitar, piano, and sing! Think it's gonna work? Do gamers actally want to learn to play real instrumets? I'll definitely have to check it out... what do you all think?

Discuss!

It may work, but I like to have fun with 5 buttons
Now everyone must buy new plastic guitars. I'm not going to unless I try it and it really blows my mind... but I wouldn't be too sure, I'm kinda fed up with these music games, I've spent too much money on them already. (2 guitars for ps2, gh3 and gh:a, then for ps3 2 guitars, drums and microphone, gh:wt and gh:m)

keyboard? *eyes light up* hehe... oh, wait... it's only the normal five buttons for the actual game! 25 seems like it would get a bit... crazy? I wonder if i'd be any good at fake piano? lol... though, totally excited for a new rock band!

Don't know whether it would work too well as far as actually teaching music goes... I'm of the mind that it's better to be taught something like that in person! though, i'm slightly curious as to how it would work?

I disagree with your last part, koneko
i found it EXTREMELY easy to get playing real drums after beating the hardest songs on expert
obviously it's not the same but playing RB drums gives you one hell of a head start
and playing RB lead me to join a music school to learn drums and despite being the newest guy, i'm the most skilled.
BTW i'm SO going to try out the piano when RB3 comes out

Loving this 100%.

I can play expert on guitar, and hard on drums already... (I don't care about singing... It doesn't count...)

I could try that Pro mode thing, and then try to teach mahself real gee-tar.

Just now realizing that I have a drum set, a guitar, and 2 real keyboards.

I can only play keyboard by ear though, I wonder how I'd do with notes scrolling down the screen...

@racroz:
hey, maybe it could work! I wouldn’t discourage anything that gets people into music! Though I’d tend to think it’d give you more of a head start, like you said. Then again, it’s not uncommon to hear about people teaching themselves to play instruments from internet lessons and the like... so who knows?

Oh! and kudos on the whole drums thing!

Well drumming on rock band is quite comparible to drumming on a real set, which is why it helps. I've met a couple of drummers who have tried rock band and were able to transfer their skill to it pretty easily, and visa versa. But for gutar it's a whole other story lol. Playing rock band guitar is nothing like playing a real guitar. Rock band might help you out with your timing, but aside from that you won't find it that easy to pick up a guitar and play, after FCing through the fire and the flames Singing tutor probably will help... I've got no idea how the keyboard pro mode will work lol.2010-06-11 01:54:00

You will, koneko
i saw a gameplay video
:O you can only see like 8ish keys at a time but the note track slides for you to see the ones you need to play

PLEASE don't expect that because you can play on expert you can play a real guitar. Not to discourage you, but the difference between 5 buttons and 6 strings with 24 frets is... large...

My dad was able to play drums on hard mode within a half an hour...

I know that. I'm just saying, it'll hopefully give me some kind of head start.

It only replaced the strum bar with strings. The fretboard is covered with over 100 string shaped buttons.

I am really psyched for Rock Band 3
I can play real guitar and drums already and I'm really looking forward to trying out the new guitar peripheral
Rock Band 3 is Harmonix's original vision of a music game (you remember how Guitar Hero 1 turned out right? ) just as much as LBP2 is Media Molecule's original vision of LBP.

I'm kinda in the same mind that the whole teaching people to play guitar could work well, but I think something like that would take an enormous amount of tutorial content. As for the drumming it's been proven to help people learn to play drums as it's basically an electric drumset (my real drum playing allowed me to do expert drumming right when I started playing Rock Band). I'm not sure how well teaching someone to sing with the game will work out, but obviously if you can sing in real life, you can sing in Rock Band

I am definetly looking forward to it, mostly to pro guitar and drums. I play both real guitar and drums, and am excited that Harmonix is actually doing this. The guitar looks sweet compared to the original 5 button version. Pro drums doesn't look improved, but I am looking forward to it also.
Here's a GTTV video interview with Harmonix.

So..in order to play the songs, you'll need to actually be able to play the song on the real guitar, right? I just skipped all of the controller-based stuff, but at E3, they made it seem that way. That's dumb. The reason people play Guitar Hero is to live out a fantasy of being a guitar god, not to actually be one. The only reason I play games like Grand Theft Auto is because I couldn't go on a crime spree like that in real life and go away physically unharmed. This is definitely taking it too far. If it's actually what it seems to be, they're taking it too far.2010-07-07 11:24:00

This is one of those "Let's do it because we can" kind of things.

I still am vaguely intrigued. It might help with picking / fretting in time and what not... but there's still a lot to a real guitar, and if you want to learn it, you just should.

Actually, the real guitar, keyboard, and drums thing is called Rock Band Pro. it is included in RB3 and you can still play with your kiddish 5 button plastic guitar, but Rock Band Pro allows you to use the new guitar that they announced, a drumset with cymbals (not very new to people who use the ION drumrocker), and the 25 button keyboard. When you don't play RB Pro, you just use a regular RB drumset (4 drums, 1 pedal), 5 buttons on the keyboard, the mic, and the 5 button guitar for lead/bass.
For drums, the 'cymbal' notes have unique notes that look like cymbals, of course color-coded, that scroll down the map.
