Martial Arts

Archive: 20 posts

Anyone here take any sort of Martial Arts? You know, Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc.

Well, I do, and have been for about 8 or so years. I got my Black Belt earlier this year. I used to take Karate, but I switched over to Oh Do Kwan (a form of Tae Kwon Do) after my old master shut down his studio when I was about 12. So yeah, it's a nice school, and I've learned a lot there.

Alright, so for those of you who do, just give your belt what form of martial arts you take, and I'll add you to the list.

Mark D. Stroyer - American Kobudo Ryu Karate - Brown-one Stripe
flakmagnet - Shotokan Karate - Blue Belt

You mean they didn't have classes on the weekdays? O.o

My studios pretty cool, they put school and work before training... so they're understanding when people miss class...

You should try doing it on the weekdays, it's much better that way.

What style did you take?

I've taken American Kobudo Ryu Karate for about...oh, I don't even remember. Four, five years? Probably leaning longer. I should be hitting black around Summer next year. I'm in the process of ramping up everything to a fine polish before I test.2008-10-08 22:23:00

What do you guys do for Black Belt tests? I know mine was hard as heck. I had to do 100 push-ups after fighting 7 people, breaking 10 or so boards in a combination, and doing all my forms.

Pretty much everything we've learned up to that point. All kata, kicks, punches, blocks, weapons, self-defense, locks, history, capped off by four minutes straight of being beat on constantly by a different black belt each minute. It's not incredibly hard in and of itself, it's simply more of a proof-of-concept. More of technique and endurance emphasis, rather than one of strength.2008-10-08 22:36:00

I probably couldn't do all that now, school has weakened me.

Ouch, yours sounds a lot more painful than mine was... so what belt are you now?

I am a Brown-one stripe. In my style, whereas most of the belts are pure colors, and testing goes each color, white and brown have three stripes, respectively. The lowest grade of each is three stripes, and subsequent tests removes two, and with one remaining the next text advances color. Despite this, each stripe is treated as a separate rank, with the same testing style.

In other words, I'm right before black. My style has somewhat long time periods on each belt.

Shotokan Karate, second graded Blue Belt (I believe 4th Kyu). We tend to focus more on self-defese against real world fighting rather than Karate vs Karate, so we do sparring, but it isn't in the standard way. We also spend quite a lot of time picking apart the Katas for their meanings, it's one of the reasons I chose the club I'm with, (I believe) it allows you to perform kata better if you can visualise it as actually having meaning for each move.

Been doing it about 5 years. It's great fun.
