Since when does/is MediaMolecule not want/allowed to listen to any ideas?

Archive: 19 posts

At MM's LBP FAQ (http://www.littlebigplanet.com/en-us/help/faq/) is the question: "I have an idea for the game, where can I send it?" The answer sounds rather strange to me: "Unfortunately we are not allowed to accept any ideas for the game, so please don't send us any! You should tell everyone else about your ideas though, [...] (http://www.littlebigplanet.com/en-us/help/faq/i_have_an_idea_for_the_game_where_can_i_send_it/)"

Am I misunderstanding this statement? Since Alex, Marc and co. don't get tired on telling cameras, how big over influence to the game and it's successor is and has been?!?

As stated on MediaMolecule.com, They're not allowed to listen to our Ideas due to Legal Reasons

There are some legal issues with taking ideas from the community, and these issues are not very fun to deal with. To my understanding, this has always been on Mm's site, which, in turn, means it would also been on the LittleBigPlanet site.2010-06-09 17:40:00

Ok, thanks, I see difficulties on the issue copyright for ideas. So "watching where the community evolves and adjusting the game" or "Hiring the best creators" is a somewhat clever workaround. And I see, how it saves money, cause no employee has to work through several thousand spammy emails a day, to find a great idea once in a while. But still, is it really the most efficent way for the cooperation of usergenerated ideas to completly shut them off?

Update: Yes, obviously it is, let us work it out in a forum and accidently surfing by to get inspirations seems pretty effective.

Yeah I understand that it's annoying but if you think about it;

If they said, "SEND US YOUR IDEAS FOR WHAT SHOULD BE IN LBP2" then they would be completely swamped by thousands of emails, 98% rubbish ideas and 2% good.

The way it stands now, the things that people want desperately getting knocked around the community sites constantly and the community managers like Spaff can cherry pick them and present them to the devs as ideas.

Well, greedy no-good, disgusting (presumbly H4Hers) would send an idea, see it in the game and then sue Media Molecule.

That's why....

I can understand why it wouldn't be good to have them swamped with ideas, but why is it illegal?2010-06-09 19:31:00

I don't think it's illegeal, but if I mail them my idea, they use it and sell 50 million more copies because of it, I might get the idea, I should get a reward (money, credits) since I have a sent mail as proof, it is easier for them, not to deal with all this. I could speculate, that "we are not allowed to accept them" is simply a more efficient phrase than "Make sure your idea is great and doublerethink copyright-issues."

Know what I mean? I thought at first, it had something to do with sony, but I don't believe that anymore. Hence, no proof, so this thread might shed some light on this.

Even though Mm doesn't openly ask for ideas, I do think Spaff takes a look around and sees if there are any good ones out there.

I suggested a Music Pack (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=13816-Music-Packs) a while back, and, a few months later, viola (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=17426-Mm-Music-Pack-1-out-now-)&highlight=music+pack)!

I asked Spaff about this one time and what he said was pretty similar to what Xario posted. He said the reason why they say that they can't listen to any ideas is because there is a very small possibility that the person who came up with the idea might end up suing them if they use it.2010-06-09 20:03:00

If you follow my link above, you read they encourage us, to tell others of our great ideas, which I could understand as: "Post in a forum, if it's great, others will stumble upon and eventually we might as well." It's a pretty clever way, for not having to actually pay sameone outside of the company for ideas, if you think about it. They just surfed the web... and got an inspiration.

Acutally, it's so clever, I can't hold it against them.

Ahh, confirmation. Thank you, who is Spaff btw? I don't recognize that name....

He's one of the Community Managers. The other being Tom.
(i.e. The guys who ran LittleBigPlanetoid.com)

This would be why they used the ideas suggested by a ton of people, as then no one person could claim it were their idea.

That was my point in the beginning, I see now, that debating great ideas on the web (by the user community) and MM's developers sufing by and getting ideas "by accident" is an effective (and possibly the only working) way. But hey, we all are new to this kind of dev-user-communication. That users have such an impact at all is quite amazing in our time. Maybe it will evolve in the future and LBP 13 will only have developers, no more users ;-)

I definitly expect FirstPerson view as a sackboy in 13, I don't know about actually becoming one, just hoping they expand the playable area, three layers will make it rather narrow (Imagine a FPS, where every map is only as deep as three players...)2010-06-09 21:58:00

Duh, everyone knows LBP13 will let you have your own pet sackperson, who learns from it's experiences in the real world.

Anyway, yeah, it's not illegal, but they don't really want to be sued. As for the Music Pack, they could eaisly have thought of that first.
