The Vehicle Triathlon Competition for a "Wheely Good" Sticker

Hidy Ho Sackfolks! I'm here to tell you some exciting news about a brand new competition that LittleBigLand.com is hosting for PSP.

But before I go into the details as to what the competition entails, let me explain what is so exciting:

Remember back in early April when AceCreator mentioned the 5 new exclusive stickers (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/t5/PSP-General-Discussion/Superstar-Gold-Rare-Sticker/m-p/236909/highlight/true#M1503) that they planned on releasing? Well, this is the first of those five that will be given out! There are 5 of these "Wheely Good" Stickers that will be given out to the top 5 levels.

So, let's get to the details about the competition:


A Vehicle Based Level Design Competition:

To celebrate the release of the Turbo! Pack as well as the Motorstorm Hessian Stitch Pack, we are hosting a Vehicle Based Triathlon. But not to fear if you do not own these packs! They are by no means required for this competition. All you need is the itch to start building a vehicle based level!



What's a Vehicle Based Triathlon ?

I'm glad you asked! Well, a triathlon is a race that commonly involves running, biking, and swimming. In the case of this competition, you will not be required to include any of those things. Instead you will be making THREE different vehicle races built into a single level.

If you have the Turbo! Pack, then the level "Short Circuit" is an great example of what we are looking for. It is a level that consists of three short races (or Circuits, hence the name "Short Circuit") which are separated by excellent platforming sections in the level. Each race has a race gate, which encourages the player to finish the race as quickly as possible.

For those of you that don't have the Turbo! Pack check out this video of the level "Short Circuit" to get a good idea of what we want.

Your level doesn't need to be as complex as Short Circuit, and it certainly doesn't need to follow the same format. It's the objective of going from one race to the next that we're looking for.



What Should I Focus On for My Level ?

Well, that is entirely up to you. But this is a Vehicle Based Triathlon competition, so your level has to consist of 3 races with a different vehicle for each race. The details are up to you.

Vehicle originality will be a strong factor in deciding which levels win. If you just use vehicles from the Turbo! Pack, then that's not so original, but if the level is still excellent then you still stand a chance at winning.

The layout of each race will be important as well. Each race should consist of a starting and ending race gate. We want to see fun courses that have interesting design as well as excellent scenery. It's easy to just use the corner edit tool to shape the ground and call it a day. We want you to put a bit more thought into it than that. Try to figure out what you can do to make your level really stand out. An original concept for a race could score huge points for a level. An example of a incredible unique concept was the Indy Car race in Short Circuit. You could also try to place barriers in the way and have a vehicle that has secondary functionality to remove the barriers. Try to think outside the box and come up with something new and exciting!

One last thing is that we would like to see is something that takes place between each of the races. It's up to you how you will handle this. You could have bits and pieces of platforming between the races, a simple survival challenge, or you could even do something as simple as having a character explaining the next race. Just try to keep the level fun from beginning to end.

Things that will be focused on when judging are: Vehicle Design, Course Design, Fun Factor, Scenery, and Originality.

You will need to sign up for the site, but that should only take to about a minute. Make sure to check your spam filter for the confirmation e-mail! If you have any issues, then please contact me here and I will try to help you though it :-D

Please do not submit your level until it is published.


Rules:

Please read these rules very carefully, failure to follow any of these rules will result in disquallification.

1) This is a competition for LittleBigPlanet PSP (Not PS3)
2) You can only enter one level.
3) There can be no republishing of your level once the deadline has passed. If you need to republish because of something serious, then contact a moderator to get permission first.
4) The level must be a new level that was created especially for this competition.
5) Your level must be published before July 13th at 2:00PM GMT. At that time submissions will be closed, this thread will be locked, and judging will begin.
6) Your level has to have 3 races (No more no less) with a different vehicle for each race.



Terms:

The competition will start on June 8th and will end on July 13th at 2:00PM GMT. The judging will begin soon after the competition has ended.

A team of judges which will consist of members from LittleBigNetwork.com (B-coli and kaiju_kid), LBPCentral.com (Taffey and Jeffcu28), and LittleBigLand.com (Mnniska and me) will be judging the levels, and results should be given a few days after the closing of the competition. The amount of time that it takes will all depend on the number of levels submitted.

The winning levels will be recorded and put on the LBL blog.



Last Words:
Your levels will be judged on Vehicle Design, Course Design, Fun Factor, Scenery, and Originality.
We are looking for levels that are original, fun, technical, and which implement the rules.

Well, the "Wheely Good" Sticker sort of implies that the owner is good with vehicles, so it wouldn't make much sense to have an on foot level

Oh come on everyone, don't feel defeated before you even try!
I never made a survival level or vehicle before, and I ended up being one of the winners for the survival challenge.

The point of these contests is to challenge yourself by stepping out of your normal boundaries and develop your skills by trying new things, so before you say you "suck" at making vehicles, make sure to try it first.

Woo-hoo! It sounds like spirits are getting a bit higher about this competition I was getting a bit worried that we were going to be giving all of the stickers to Cory for a while there

I think that everyone who has posted in this thread is very capable of making an awesome vehicle level, and there are so many things that you could do with this. I sort of wish I wasn't judging so I could try to snag a sticker.

Remember to think outside the box. You could have a story based level that has 3 vehicle sections, or you could have a level that goes from land to sea to air, heck you could even remake the pogo stick for part of the level as one of the vehicles.

Hey, I just wanted to check - do all vehicles need to have a full range of movements? One thing I might do is have a helicopter that moves forward by itself, but you steer it up and down.2010-06-12 13:52:00

I see no problem with that I mean, if someone makes a vehicle ridiculously boring by having a vehicle that drives itself then it probably won't fare as well as a vehicle that the player controls, but it sounds like you have some fun things planned for this helicopter, so I would imagine that it might actually be a good thing to have a helicopter that controls in a unique way (drives itself forward, but you control the up/down motion). What we really want to see are unique things.

I'm excited to see what you come up with B3! Just focus on keeping the vehicle sections fun and interesting (and a good looking vehicle is a happy vehicle) 		2010-06-12 14:35:00

I thought of an amazing level for this competition.
I thought for my first vehicle would be actually starting in a coaster. (That's derailed) and it flys off and lands in a car, and guess what? You're driving the coaster/car. I thought this idea was smart, but I looked at the end date.

Yeah, I could probably finish a level in time, but since it's dealing with something I'm not used to, it'll be longer.
I usually use 1-2 hours of creating a day. Not a lot, and I still need to invent more ideas for my entry. Not sure if I could do one.

I'll build a vehicle in my level one day though.

I'm actually building a coaster as well. It's hard to make the tracks since it's attached to it. But so far it's going good. I'm thinking I'll finish in time. The other two vehicles are a secret.2010-06-17 02:19:00

haha, all you crazy people with lack of roller coasters! I've been making rollercoasters in my levels since before LBP PSP was even out! [Coastin' in the Jungle.. made for PSP - quality level.. got spotlighted a while back ]

As for the next sticker, I am excited to see what it is, though I strongly suspect that it won't be released for a while. My guess is that they will have multiple competitions for each new sticker before releasing a new one. That way we always have something mysterious on the horizon. My third race challenge made some huge progress today and the raw constructions of the other ones are ready too! I am really happy with it right now (although there is no scenery, racegates, platforming yet ). It looks like i have some free time the next week so an entry could be possible... but i dont promise anything.

Btw: i have the feeling that this competition really helps getting a better creator. I need to think of so many different solutions... it took me the whole evening just to make my 3rd challenge even possible. How does sackboy get into and out of the vehicle? How will the race start? I'd say go for it :-D Maybe when you are unable to work on it, you can think of things that you could cut out of the level that will take too much time and add easier things. When I was working on Destiny, I tried to add in some awesome elements that added a LOT of extra time to the build time and they just ended up introducing problems anyway. I suddenly realized that those elements weren't even necessary and then the whole building cycle sped waaaay up and everything went smoothly after that. Just try to focus on what the level NEEDS instead of focusing on little details that aren't necessary. I'm sure you can pull it off in two weeks :-)

I'm a third of the way through my level (Under Construction) and enjoying every minute of it! This contest has been great so far Poo, and what's more you've managed to keep me creating on PSP and not switching to PS3 - quite a feat

I've yet to make a start on this challenge, PS3 has been too distracting and I'm suffering LittleBigMentalBlock. Literally haven't touched create mode for weeks and haven't even TRIED create on the PS3, despite just getting it.

My level Under Construction is very much that. I have two races polished off, leaving only one more plus platforming. I've had a blast creating it and for once I've got the thermo past halfway!

There really isn't any chance that we will be extending the deadline. The reason for this is that I am moving back to America on July 22nd, so it is already pretty crazy for me to be judging this on July 13th! That means that I will be submitting the results just days before making this huge move.

Hopefully you can understand this. It was actually a rough decision to move the deadline back the first time because I was worried that July 6th would be too close to when I was moving.		2010-07-09 13:28:00

Ah man. The contest is over, and I semi-finished the level. By semi, I mean it's partially glitchy, due to a lot of my mechanisms breaking. Sigh.... Oh well, it was fun. You should have seen me an hour before the deadline hit. I was speed Creating so fast, I practically made my PSP system overheat! I finished over half of the level in that hour alone!

I doubt they will, as AceCreater said they would only do a few of those contests for the Rare Gold sticker, than just do contests for other stickers. That's why even though 106 people in the UK (I think it was UK...) downloaded it, it's still pretty rare. I believe there are a total of 121 currently. 15 from contests, and 106 from PSN's mistake. haha, I can't wait for another contest after this one

I onl;y came back to the PSP side because I had an idea for a survival challenge and there was a contest going. But then I fell in love with the game all over again and felt I had to keep creating.
