"Cookie" Switch

Archive: 34 posts

Here's one I'm sure at least SOMEBODY must have asked about before. It's a switch that remembers wherher it was on or off last time you were playing! This way we can create levels that can remember if you played before or possibly even used in advanced logic to make sure the level starts differently every time! I'd have so many uses for this one! If you're still confused, I guess you can just call me an idjut below.2010-06-09 14:36:00

Yup, I've thought of that one. Especially if cookies can be shared between levels published by the same player somehow...

Possibilities are certainly endless

It would be a brilliant idea, our levels could have their own visited hyperlinks.2010-06-09 14:49:00

That would actually be great for an RPG. If one cookie switch would link up to another, in another level, your choices in the level you are playing will continue over to the next, only depending on what you did, everything changes!2010-06-09 15:08:00

I could already utilize the number of one's finishs of a level, if there was a way to check it inside a level....2010-06-09 16:05:00

There is a number of different ways this could be used, like say your friend in the first level had to leave due to a game changing cut-scene, but would only happen if you went to a special place. This way, the next level could remember that, and not put him in into the next level.

Great Idea dude!

Maybe the tubes have some sort of influence...?
the tubes, linking one level to another. Maybe.
But it's a great idea, all the same. Would be a real game changer.

Would sure make some interesting things happen. If we have a group of players, half of them have met the Cookie Switch (or just a tweak option? We loves our tweaks!) and half hadn't, should it go by the Game Leader or split cams? (Split cams would involve the CP issue... so maybe not.)
A thing for replays could be done with this (if kaskaroto gets desperate f.ex.)
"play this 10 times get 60 FREE OBJECTS!!!11!"
The word FREE appeals to the lil' uns, doesn't it? D:

This would be great if you could assign them to check points in a level. So you could start from a check point you got to on a big level the next time you played it if you didn't manage to finish it. So it would be like a save.
Would be great for them extremely hard (ELITE) levels

Save Points in a game anyone??? This would be the most vital thing in a"game" in LBP2. We need save points. Even though i can see it being done with QR codes and levels. When you finish a level, in the actual level there is a QR code on a sticker, take a picture of the in-game sticker, and use the picture when you want to return to which level you were on. Although a cookie save checkpoint would be much easier.2010-06-11 00:46:00

The inter-levellial (lol?) Cookie Switch plus the option to choose the level you want to go on next (if the level you're in is connected to multiple others) would make some EPIC interactive interactive sagas.
OR level's switches could control what level is played next. Let's say, if you fail a race in the level, causing one of the story characters to die, then you would advance to level X instead of level Y.
And Save Checkpoints FTW! When you start a level, you can choose if you want to continue from the checkpoint or the beginning, instead of always starting from the save point.
You *could* do it with stickers and teleporting, but making the players get the sticker and getting them understand what to do with it could be a chore.

To those who thought it was about the food kind of cookie, think of it as a cookie crumb trail through levels

This would be incredibly useful, really hope we get something like this.

@cowboy and coaster: Lol.

Cookies could open it a whole new market area for advertisement inside LBP: "Your Level starts after the video in 16 seconds..." Maybe LBP2 won't get too many users. If everyone who now watches tv is going to "use" LBP, that is certainly what's coming to us. Exciting, isn't it?

I agree, the idea of a switch that stores custom settings after a visit and reads them after a re-visit, is a very awesome one. Why not suggest this directly to MM? I think they'd also see the value in this. LBP2 is still in development, so it isn't too late.2010-06-11 18:47:00

Why not suggest this directly to MM?

Eh, there is this little problem that we could solve during this thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=28372-Since-when-does-is-MediaMolecule-not-want-allowed-to-listen-to-any-ideas) (Ui, I am already advertizing my own threads, but it's exactly that.)

It would definitely seem logical for Mm to include something like this since they've been calling lbp2 a "platform for games" and they've gone so far as to mention the possibility of making rpgs. I really hope that settings/values can be stored and retrieved when playing a level again, or transfer from level to level.2010-06-11 22:01:00

And it shouldn't be too difficult to implement, since the game already logs what, when and how often you play a level, so giving us access to these variables should be possible. Are we sure Mm knows that it'd be cool? I don't wanna hear: "D'oh, now it's too late, if someone would have come up with this 6 month earlier..."

On the other side, I could imagine, that there are side effects we (well,..I) haven't thought about and which could render it very difficult.

[...] LBP2[...] platform for games [...] they've gone so far as to mention the possibility of making rpgs.
I' see that only as a minor evidence if you take into account the new chain-level-link-withoutPOD-thingy on one hand and this 30-second-hero-homage-rpg for... xbox live (not sure which platform) on the other one. Anyway, just a comment, I'm hoping they are aware.

Maybe someone should splat the idea to the "ten questions @ Mm" -thread?
Then just start supporting it

' see that only as a minor evidence...
I didn't mean that it was evidence. I meant that if Mm were aiming to make rpg's and other genres possible, it would seem logical to include a cookie switch. They may have something else in mind.... or not. There's no actual evidence either way.

this is a great Idea...I thought of a character saying "so did you find the sticker in the other level yet?" it's like it knows that it's already been activated omg its so cool to think of 2010-06-13 03:36:00

I think I saw "Welcome back to our RTS!" or something along those lines, in the RTS level by Media Molecule. He started up the level, and it welcomed him back.. Consider it confirmed? (if it isn't only usable by Media Molecule)

EDIT: Yep, confirmed! Look here:

If you think this is fake, watch the video here yourself, and skip to 2:28:

Erm, how does that confirm your idea? You do know it's possible to just write "Welcome back" at the beginning of a level. Doesn't mean that system notices that you've played it before.2010-06-18 11:36:00

"Welcome Back ! Now that we have found the Alliance base, you gonna have a NEW UNIT, behooold, the "AIRBEESHIP" !"

Sounds to me that the level they used to show off the RTS gameplay was just one further along in the series of RTS levels. I can see what you're getting at, but I'm not optimistic enough that 'Welcome Back !' confirms persistant data. I'd personally keep asking for it (in the suggest to sony thread and whatnot) until it IS officially confirmed.

Couldn't this be accomplished with unique stickers and sticker switches?2010-06-18 15:40:00

yes, but sticker switches are a horrible mechanic...

TBH, I can see a lot of issues in handing over a system like this to users to use free form within this game. I also see a lot of issues in developing the interface and implementation for a non-technical audience to be able to use intuitively. Not to say that it wouldn't be great, but y'know, implementation is harder than it might seem.
