Digital guitar?

Archive: 32 posts

Well, it's more like a synthesizer using a touchpad and multiple buttons/sensors than a guitar, but it's still kind of an interesting instrument.

What do you guys think? Does this new instrument have any potential or is it just a neat gadget that's going to disappear in a couple of years?

Wow!

In terms of replacing guitars, I don't think we have to worry, but, this is would be a very cool way to perform electronic music live. I actually want to get me one of these!

Also, I expect the guitar snobs to step in here any second now...

This seems to be an actual electric guitar. Electric guitars themselves aren't electric really, just normal sounds converted into electric signals and amplified.

WHOA! that's Cool! Who wouldn't want one ( aside from purist snobs that might say something dumb like, "That's not a guitar." )?
looks like it would really make synth accessible to those who primarily play guitar. Tons of stage presence.

I want three!

a lovely piece of kit, I've got one myself, it can never replace a guitar though, it's just a modern version of the "key-tar"

yep pendulum use it...

I do have a lot of other equipment to, so if some tries to criticize me for liking it, I'll tell you exactly what equipment i have

Okay, Alex, we got it, you're a snob and you don't like guitar synthesizers. In every thread you always prove how cool you are because you hate something, and your taste in everything is far superior than everyone else's, we all understand that.

Anyway, could you elaborate on what makes it not a guitar? It looks a lot like a guitar to me.

You said it yourself. It's a synthesizer shaped like a guitar. The touchpad acts as a mod filter. There are no strings. You could probably accomplish the same thing with an iPad, which is also not a guitar, or a keyboard/keytar which are also not guitars.

But somehow I don't think this post was about the instrument at all...

I'd rather have my ESP.

I as well. I've yet to hear anything digital that comes close to the sound of a real guitar. Even amp modelers sound like garbage.

Not a guitar? You think?!

From watching and listening to the video, I didn't get the sense that it was trying all that hard to be a guitar.
personally, I don't give a pair of dingo's kidneys what it is. I think it's pretty cool!

I wonder if the finger board is pressure sensitive.

--edit---

actually, electric guitars and synths aren't all that different;
Synth sound starts with it's Source oscillator where a guitar uses it's strings for the same.

Synths use a variety of modulation techniques at this point where guitarists will use Omishure to manipulate timbre, such as muting, pick styles, and fret posture.

Next comes filtering and post-modulation. same with guitar. Any Synth programmer will tell you that a Cry-baby is only a stripped-down Band-Pass Filter, and compressors are just envelope filters.

Then comes Amplification. It all comes down to a 1/4 inch patch cable for guitar and synth alike.

You've yet to hear anything that comes close to an electric guitar, you mean. I don't really see why you'd want it to sound like a real guitar, anyway. You're obviously not going to want a guitar synthesizer if you're playing metal or something than that.

It's a guitar, and it's a synthesizer. It's not that hard a concept to grasp.

No one has yet explained to me what makes this not a guitar.

looks like a guitar (mostly)
plays like a guitar (kind-of)
Sounds like a guitar (well, okay, that's a bit of a strech.)

I'm not sure I'd say that it's a guitar, But I'm not sure I'd say that it ISN'T one either. I still want one. Or at least play one for a bit.
I wonder if Guitar Center has a demo on the floor.

Apparently (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&defl=en&q=define:guitar&sa=X&ei=40EQTLPoDZukNaj2le0C&ved=0CBIQkAE), a guitar needs strings to be a guitar 2010-06-10 02:38:00

Would be cool to make some techno on it tho, and wont have to dealt with hurt fingers (dont play my guitar that much soo TEH PAIN!), but still wont replace electric/acoustic guitars, just because electric pianos came out it didnt meant that they replaced the classic ones, same with the new electric batteries.2010-06-10 03:37:00

what ever it is, it's definately not a keytar, since knowing your way around the piano keyboard won't really help you play this.2010-06-10 03:50:00

I'll stick with my Epi, but this still makes an interesting sound. I don't see it sticking around for very long, more like a toy than an instrument.2010-06-10 04:19:00

Actually, I did. And you've chosen to argue this on a philosophical level, instead. Go believe whatever you want, I could care less.

It's a cool concept, that's for sure. It seems like the next generation of keytar to me. Whether it sticks around or not, that's another matter entirely. I wouldn't mind trying one out, just to see what it's like.2010-06-12 01:14:00

Yay-Sus H. Krist, you guys sure get riled up about stupid things...

If isn't a guitar, it must die in a fire!

I mean, come on guys. If you don't like... whatever that is, go complain elsewhere. The !!Guitarist!! thread would be nice; everyone there would agree nicely, methinks.

Fair enough that it isn't a guitar, but that's no reason to be mean about it. It sounds cool, is innovative, and could do well. It most likely will never be successful, but that's not the point.2010-06-13 17:33:00

I don't know about that. It looks like its bringing guitar synths into the modern age. All the ones I've seen have been stuck in the '80s.

If nothing else, a bigger company will copy it and make it popular. It's really awesome.
