Amazon Anguish

Archive: 7 posts

After much thought, I think I have finally found a theme in which I like and am willing to stick to. That theme being the Amazon.

In my new Amazon Anguish level, I wish to incorporate both on land platforming, and underwater puzzles. I still have yet to decide if I should make it look as realistic as possible, or a bit more dreamy and fake-ish; I hope to get your input on this subject. Oh, and if you have any obstacle requests or ideas, feel free to shout 'em out!

I vote for realistic, there are plenty of fake-ish, cartoony levels out there & not nearly enough realistic ones; I love both extremes, mind you, but I'm in the mood for realism these days.2010-06-08 03:55:00

I would say for the graphical style to go with your own style, trying to make something realistic can become difficult and frustrating, while dreamy and fake-ish can have some items seem out of place or weird. So just make it within your style and don't worry too much about making it look super fancy or anything. As for obstacles... hmm.. How about swinging with monkeys while others try to knock ya down or kill ya? (don't make it too difficult ).

Oh, and best of luck on completing it quickly, that's always my problem. I lose interest!

I agree. Realistic can be very frustrating to make. It really depends on the creator though. If you excell at one of the two, go headlong into the one you're best at. Creators each seem to have their own niche. Keep experimenting and you'll figure out what's you :]2010-06-08 04:02:00

I think I have been leaning a bit more towards realism, and so that is what I'll do. I found myself to be quite good at it in my The Tomb of Sackhmet, so I am hoping for the same here. Thank you all! And I am still of course up for hearing any ideas, obstacle ideas, or suggestions!2010-06-08 14:35:00

Yeah, realism is probably the best course. Try using the textured woods (Dark wood, green wood... Etc.) when creating the actual forest and try to avoid stickers if possible (except for characters... etc.) As sometimes the sense of reality can be undone by even the smallest frog sticker.... Oh that reminds me lol, I was supposed to be making a frog for this! Whoops! I made a cartoony one, but I take it now you want a realistic one? Lol i'll get right on that.2010-06-09 19:03:00

Actually, I don't think that realism is the best design choice, it is a choice.
I would ask myself: "What makes Amazon Amazon to me?" Meaning you should distill the defining elements of it, like ... five things that come to your mind. Giving some thought on good implementation of those should lead to a good atmophere in your level. If the atmo comvinces a player, the actual (micro) design falls in place and fits due the subjectivity of our visual perception.
