I'll be getting one, actually. It'll be my first cell phone too, which is kind of weird seeing as everyone I know has had a cell phone since like 7th grade. I'm going to be spoiled...2010-06-10 07:18:00

FaceTime seems a bit pointless, WiFi to WiFi only? Not really a 'phone' then. It does look good for people without an iPhone already, but meh.2010-06-10 08:02:00

Tl:dr iPhone (jokes)

Got an iPhone 3GS currently, I suppose when I'm due my upgrade I'll get it, if I've got enough spare moneys.

They just gonna keep getting thinner and thinner aren't they?

I can imagine what's gonna be in a couple of Years:

"Now presenting the new iPhone 10 so thin its acutally really wide!

Yeah...that's when iPhones died.

If they only made it as an ipod touch, too... I have a cellphone and in Finland you have to have certain phonecompanies to have an iPhone... And I already have a cellphone, but would need a mp3-player (although it actually isn't one, it does so much more )2010-06-10 19:37:00

You're starting with the best, I've used countless mobiles and hated almost every one! I've got no complaints with mine at all, persuaded the wife to get a one to, and she loves it, so it must be good

My network, o2, are now charging for data above 500mb, and a ridiculous amount to upgrade, I'll stick with my old one for a few months and upgrade then. Its not like I don't want it, but I refuse to pay o2 anymore money.

I think I'm going to be joining the darkside and getting this. How much is 500mb of usage? What does that work out at in time looking at websites?

I'm not willing to pay more than ?35 a month. I need unlimited texts, but whatever the minimum amount of minutes is will do me fine.

You should be able to get unlimited texts and unlimited internet for ?35 a month, easy. If not, somone's* bending you over. If you're already on contract you shold be able to knock a chunk off whatever tariff if you talk to the cancellations people Actually, now I look at it, some of the networks are dropping unlimited data... But there is alsways wifi to reduce your bill

*Probably Steve Jobs, tbh Seems O2 drop the unlimited data same day the iPhone 4 is released....

haha I'm on T-Mobile at the minute...so it's I'm just going to have to take another contract out (luckily I know someone who wants to take over mine). At the minute I get unlimited texts and 100 minutes for ?15 a month, which is a bargain! So going upto ?30-35 for what is effectively the same in terms of texts and minute is daft enough. That's the price of the iPhone though, eh? 2010-06-11 13:47:00

Looking at the pricing, I'll probably be getting the black 32GB with the unlimited messaging and 2GB data plan (no unlimited data anymore - ). Supposedly, if you preorder the phone will arrive the same day it comes out in stores, so we're just gonna go that route. It's part of a family thing - we're getting phones for the entire family, but I'm the only one getting the iPhone.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it, even if Apple has over-hyped it and tried to make it sound more like the second coming than just a great smartphone. Seriously, have you seen the ad for this thing? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHngLJ0RlNg)

I've had a new one off insurance for almost 3 months and I've used 1.7gb of data in that time. And I'm a heavy user, a lot of LBPC, facebook twitter etc when not in the house.

To be honest, its a rip off that they've removed free data on such an internet/connectivity centered device.

It's $25 a month. The other option, 200MBs of data a month, is $15 a month. One is required if you're going to own an iPhone with any sort of plan. I'd rather pay the extra $10 and not have to worry about risking going over the measly 200MB limit imposed on you if you go the slightly cheaper route.

Oh, how AT&T gobbles up your money, eh?

I'm on AT&T so I know first hand how it gobbles it up, and I really never use the internet, webbrowsing, or anything. Sure I'll go on youtube every like once in a while for like 2-3 minutes, I don't think I'd need 2 GB though. Plus your constantly texted to see how close you are to coming to your limit which is pretty cool.

Ah, but the iPhone is very well marketed, you've seen all the iphone features, and how low they've priced it... Apple are going for market dominence, and they aren't going to let some android phones get in their way!2010-06-13 08:44:00

It's weird that no-one seems to realise that apple ranks #3 #2 in the smartphone OS market... Now that is good marketing - making people believe you are market leaders when in fact you are trailing behind

Android 2.2 certainly does look to be greater than iPhone OS4, IMO and in honesty, I don't see why anyone would want to buy into such a closed and controlling system as the iphone when there are equally good (technically) options around that aren't.

2.2 isn't actually out yet though, of course, so Apple will have a headstart, but 2.1 is still pretty good.

Well I am the first to admit that I really don't like Apple, and have never really been a fan of the iPhone. I'm still not...but for some reason I really want one

I'm not sure why, I think it may be because I haven't bought any gadgets in a while and just want something to play with

But yeah, I really agree about the controlling system thing. Their point of 'our users are willing to let us take some of the control away from them to ensure a great user experience' doesn't wash with me. The level of control on all their products really annoys me. They say they have truly amazing technology and in some cases they do, but then there's areas of their products that are lacking, and for no other reason than Apple wanting to hold stuff back.

But hey, I say all that and then still want an iPhone, I'm making everything worse aren't I? The main reason I'm not looking anywhere else is that no one can compare with the App store. There are some great phones on the market that are equal/better than it in terms of spec, but they really can't compete with the applications.

You got a link to that 3rd in the market thing?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/05/07/idc_smartphone_numbers/ I don't doubt that Apple will continue to rise though.

As a general rule though, theregister is not a good place to get info on Apple products, they are extremely biassed against Steve Jobs on that site.

I don't really know about the apps, I'm still holding back on buying a smart phone until I decide exactly what I want... but from what I've seen, android offers everything I could actually want.

I haven't really looked at android to be honest. I just keep hearing that they have far too many OS's out there and as a result aren't really supporting any of them as well as they could/should.2010-06-13 15:29:00

The thing with the Android(s) is that they are very buggy. About 6-7 of my friends recently joined a family plan together with verizon and got the Droid, it has A LOT of bugs. The screen will constantly freeze, go black, and the touch screen isn't all too well.

The thing I like about Apple is, when they make something they make it work well, I never owned an iPhone but my friend has and I had always played around with it, it was very smooth, fast, and bug free, that's the only thing that (in my opinion) sets Apple apart from the rest of the companies.

Oh and Jack makes a good point, Apple only has one type of phone out, the iPhone. That means all their focus or at least most of it, goes towards the iPhone. There are tons of Androids out, making it very hard to support them all as well as they could be doing.

And I love dem apps.

Of course I'm already with At&t so the change to a smartphone isn't as drastic, I'll only have to pay an extra $15 a month.

The screen will constantly freeze, go black, and the touch screen isn't all too well. Ta for the info, as far as I can tell it really depends which phone you go for as to how buggy the droids are, many of them seem to be fine by all accounts and I know several people who are getting on fine with HTC desires. Obviously it's not doing android any favours that some models are as bad as whatever your friends have. You do kinda have to compare the iPhone to the cream of the Android crop as well, and I've mostly heard good things about the top-end droids, both hardware and software.

There are tons of Androids out, making it very hard to support them all as well as they could be doing. This is actually something of a fallacy, it sounds convincing, but it's perfectly possible to support a far wider range of hardware than android does and still be stable, especially if you're open-source. Several OS's manage it ATM, and I don't doubt that android will continue to improve and probably evolve much faster than the iPhone.

Although, that said, I've probably dragged this a bit far off topic now, the iPhone is a very well made product, just that it's perceived dominance of market / quality is a little exaggerated and certainly not enough to justify buying into Steve Jobs ego-driven business model

That's not going off topic! You're still discussing your view on the iPhone!

And the perceived dominance is basically their idea... And it works pretty dang well!
Personally, I prefer the iPhone to androids, because I prefer most of Apple's software, and like how things work. I'm happy with my 3G (despite the fact the screen and headphone socket are broken due to a tragic accident ) except for the lack of customisability of the message tone and wallpaper, and also that I can't bluetooth photos to other phones.
But the wallpaper issue is being sorted in OS4, I don't know about the message tones, but maybe...
And the bluetooth thing, I'm not TOO fussed about! (Hopefully some developer will make an app to allow it though, If that's acceptable by Apple...)

And I don't want to jailbreak my phone! (again >.<) I prefer a 100% legit version, if you know what I mean!

Yeah it's definitely possible to support more OS's than Android are doing currently to a high level. I never said that the iPhone was better because it was the only product that Apple support...I merely said that Android were struggling to support all of the OS's they have out at the minute.

I think I'm going to get iPhone 4 anyway. I will wait until it's out so I can have a play, but as far as I can tell so far, they have at least one sale

Well I'm talking about the Droid for Verizon. I don't know it's exact name, I always thought it was Droid. But for example, my friends Droid completely reset itself last night. All her pictures were deleted and her texts, contacts were still there but everything else went bye bye. Don't know what could possibly of happened as we were swimming, then she went to check and that happened. I'm not saying it happens to all of them and I do believe the Androids will surpass the iPhone soon if not already. But I just like the sleek and smooth look and feel of the iPhone, not to mention the Apps. 2010-06-15 01:21:00

50 dollar deposit? What's that even mean? Put in 50 towards the iPhone and then 150 when it's officially out? Or the 50 dollars is just to pre-order it.

Since we're also ordering other "non-iPhone" phones along with it (on a family plan), I have to wait until it's out before I can buy it. AT&T has some weird rule about not mixing pre-orders and regular orders.

That's lame. I hope it comes on the day of launch, I wanna mess around with it as soon as possible.

Unless there's a problem with shipping, it will. They schedule them specifically to arrive day-of - they actually instruct the shipping centers to hold onto them if it's on track to get to you early.

Speaking of which, when you (or anyone else, for that matter) gets theirs in, would you mind letting me know what you think? I'm curious to see what consumers think when they actually get it in their hands.

UGGG
Costco **** you!
I just checked my model number on my itouch and i found out i have a 2nd generation itouch!
Clearly Costco said it was a 3rd generation, ( I also found out only 32GB and up is 3rd generation for Itouch's) And i have a 8GB and the reciecpt says
Ipod Touch 8GB 3rd Gen

Maybe my dad will take me there and use his amazing arguing skills to let them take the 8GB back and give me a 32GB for the price i payed for the 8GB!

Actually, I'd be surprised if it did. They instruct shipping centers to hold onto the devices until release day, regardless of what day it says on the tracking number.

Actually I have the tracking number, it's in transit to my house right now and it's estimated date is the 23rd with a 3:00 PM delivery date. And if you check on Google a lot of people are having the same thing.

I'd probably cry if it's not really in transit.

Well I did receive it, it's absolutely amazing, the camera is the best. Unfortunately I cannot activate it until midnight tonight since AT&T has suspended all activations for it.

^ God bless America, lol. But in all honesty, it's because AT&T subsidizes the heck out of the price here, but you get stuck with an AT&T contract for two years. Also, no one else carries iPhones except for AT&T due to exclusivity rights so if you get crappy AT&T service in your area of the US and really want an iPhone, but don't want to pay the unsubsidized fee (which is $599 for the 16Gb and $699 for the 32Gb), then you'll have to bite the bullet.

And... I found out my 32Gb is at the hizzouse! Can't wait for work to end!!!

To those of you who got one, anyone experiencing the issue where apparently (http://gizmodo.com/5571171/iphone-4-loses-reception-when-you-hold-it-by-the-antenna-band) the iphone 4 suffers a massive drop in signal strength, when you hold it by the antenna band, i.e. how you might naturally hold a phone to make a call.

According to Apple's customer service line, it's "not apple's problem" Well of course it's not, they already have all your monies! Lols. In fairness, it's easily fixable with a case, but still funny none-the-less.

I haven't had that issue either.

There is a problem however, that the signal "sign" will appear to be of low signal strength, when you may actually have full bars. It's a bug Apple attends to fix.

Well that would absolutely explain why some people are seeing the data bandwidth drop at the same time Seems like Apple are well aware of the issue as well, they just simply don't care. It's a user error, not a design flaw.

Well I'm left handed so when I heard about this I was glad I didn't get one yesterday...then I realised that I hold my phone in my right hand and would use my left to pinch and scroll etc so it wouldn't effect me after all.

It is definitely a design flaw, if Apple really are saying that it isn't then that's pretty outrageous.

There's no way getting a case is a solution. They've boasted about how thin the phone is and how its new design is beautiful and elegant and then say 'if you want it to work properly stick this 'bumper' case on it.' Erm, no thanks?

The name bumper alone tells you something about what it's gonna look like!

All you have to do is turn on air plane mode then turn it off, it's that simple. I did it and when I watch my bars they don't drop anymore. Also, this screen is amazing! I'm on it right now and it blows me away to just see how crisp and clear everything is.

Edit: also, if you are gonna get a case anyways, then the whole antenna thing shouldn't be an issue.

I was just messing with the vid quality of the phone last night and did a little edit with the iMovie app.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVcmbi5TMnQ

It's very comparable to my Flip Mino HD on top of having the LED flash so it looks like I'll be handing that off to the wifey. On top of that, picture quality is much better. One less thing I have to carry around, the better. =)

My only real complaint was that when you use the option to upload to youtube from the phone it doesn't upload in hd, but then I heard of an app that let's you do it, but then I found out the developer has pulled the app temporarily because of some bug they found, oh the saga continues.

Atleast when the app goes back up on the app store I'll get it. Goes to show that, as usual, there is app for almost any need.

And that's fixed the electromagnetic issues of the aerial? Wow. I have a feeling yours might have been the issue Whaaale was discussing. Though it could well be that a lot of people reporting the hardware issue were also suffering from that. I guess it'll be a while before we actually know to what extent that's affecting people

Cool vid donkey show. I'm actually now considering looking at HD video on a phone after seeing that. Not that I need or particularly want it... but that is far too cool. Plus, I think you needs some more sackboy toys, you're collection is looking far too small

Gah, AT&T delayed the release of the iPhone 4 'till the 29th (I wasn't going to deal with Apple stores, and all the other stores are only getting like 50 total units in). Coincidentally, I have to be up at 3:30 AM on that day to help truck a family member to the airport for a flight, so I get to wait in line at a nearby AT&T store for 2 hours before they open (9AM) before I pick it up. Hope it's worth it!

I know this has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but I checked out the portfolio link in your signature and you've got some serious potential. I dunno how much it means coming from me, so take as much from it as you want, but I think you've got some chops. Might want to look into CSS though - using that many images on the page takes a long time to load for the end user, and it's bandwidth heavy as well. A lot of the things you're currently doing (including the drop shadowing!) can be done with CSS. Also, that animation at the top, the .gif - that can be done with some JavaScript (or, if you prefer, jQuery - it's easier to use and implement) and some embedded fonts.

Anyway, that's just my observations - good work overall. Sorry for the interruption!

I just tried this, I held it exactly the way he held it, I even covered the entire iPhone's sides with both my hands, kind if cupped it in my hands, I kept a constant 5 bars. It might just be a certain percentage of iPhone's.

Also I read up on this and it seems that it will "show" you, that you have No Service when you can still make calls and such. It appears to just be the display that's acting up, I don't know I read that on an article somewhere so I don't know how legit it is but it's something to think about.

I think I saw engadget mention that it's a display issue, either way I have much better service than my 3G. It really hasn't affected me then again I don't hold it covering that corner.2010-06-26 19:05:00

I think the fact apple have actually acknowledged it as a genuine issue (albeit one they have no intention of fixing - probably because the engineering is too "cool" to worry about function), tells us pretty conclusively that it is separate to any display issue that the phone is suffering from.

Obviously it's not affecting everyone and there are a myriad of reasons why that might be. If it's not affecting you guys, then I guess all is good, but the issue exists and the fact that it does, and Apple's response, is something I'd be bearing in mind if I were considering buying one....

I picked mine up yesterday too and it's great. Only thing is I had to wait in line only for them to run out and make me go back later.
It runs iOS4 much faster than the 3Gs haven't seen any huge performance issues. Reception doesn't seem like a problem unless you hold it for prolonged periods without moving your hand position.

The iTunes issue is very annoying though... Hope Apple gets it sorted out soon.

I'm happy! Especially since I got to keep unlimited data!

No, and probably never will unfortunatly. Luckily, the install base has grown enough that it is forcing many sites to make themselves more iphone friendly with the use of stuff like html5.

My issue is still uploading to places in hd. I got an app called PixelPipe but they cap their uploads at 200mb. This means any videos over 2:25 can't be uploaded (I calculated it out, that's should be right at 200mb). I would be fine if I could get atleast 3 minutes in but 2 minutes is pretty short.

Luckily you can still easily plug in your iPhone, pull the video off and upload it like any other video to any video hosting site you like.

Jack the iTunes problem is where over 3G it wouldn't let it connect to the app store or iTunes store, some websites wouldn't load either. Seems to be fixed by now though.2010-07-04 14:02:00
