Comic-Con '08 LittleBigPlanet Hands On

Archive: 71 posts

Yesterday I got the chance to play LittleBigPlanet for the first time, and what a time I had. This game is everything it's cracked up to be and more, and I am so glad I got a chance to see it firsthand. I played it 5 different times, 15-20 minutes of playtime each turn, so about an hour and a half of total play time. This is how it was set up: The Associate Producer of the game(his name was Eric *something*, I don't remember his last name) played using one controller, and three others would play along with him. I got time with the character customization, level editor, and one of the single player levels, all the while I was able to ask him any questions I had, which I did. There was a tutorial level, but I never got a chance to play it. I did watch some people play it, though, and I got a chance to film a portion of it for you guys before he told me he didn't want me filming the game. I am gonna portion off the info for each chunk I got a chance to see and play, so the information is relevant to the topic it is placed under. Anyway, here is everything I noticed playing the game:

Character Customization

There are a huge amount of customizable items, from hats to glasses to shoes to pants to zebra outfits and everything in between.
There is a Tron suit you can wear in the game, along with a killzone helmet and mask.
Not only that, but there are about 25 different materials and designs that you can choose to have your sackboy made out of, including 3 types of camo.
There are held items that you can choose from, such as a wooden sword and a magic wand(a stick with a star on the top). You can't use them as weapons, but when you slap while holding an item you hit them with said item.
You can slap just about any kind of sticker you can think of on your sackboy, so you can essentially make your own designs.

Level editor

For those of you that don't know, you can switch back and forth between flying and running around by pressing *down* on the d-pad.
When everyone has a menu open, the menus auto-adjust to the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right corners to keep the screen clear.
LBP comes with a nice 10 premade vehicles or so(I drove a lowrider!), but as with everything else you can edit them as you like.
Logs burn. You can make a log, or anything out of wood, really, and set it on fire. We made a floor full of burning logs and then we drove a monster truck over them.
There are "triggers" that you can place to have events happen right when you want them to. For example, you can make it so halfway through swinging on a rope across a gap, the rope snaps and you fall down to another area.
Anything you can think of, you can make. Just be careful when making a "Sonic" level or a "Mario" level, because that won't fly on the servers. Name it something generic that won't warrant deletion.
If you want to make carpet, you can. All you have to do is take a picture of some carpet, apply the sticker to something thin and soft(sponge, for example), and save the item.
If you made a ******* vehicle, you can make that vehicle collectible through your level. For example, you could reward players who made it past a particularly difficult portion of your level with a buggy you made, which they could use at any time throughout making their levels. This applies to items, such as carpet, as well.
The size of your crater on the moon corresponds directly with the amount of items you can place on a level. This way you can have a minigame taking up a small crater, while a full, hour long level would take up one of the largest craters.

The Construction Yard

This is the level I got a chance to play three times.
Eric was really stressing the term "Coopetition", which is cooperating so you can compete for the collectible items and points. For example, there was a lever that would slide a girder across a gap. It requires two people(at least) to complete. One would move the girder across using a lever, the other would grab the chunk of sponge at the other side, which the first player would now bring back with the same lever. That sponge was required to reach a certain height, so you could collect more goodies. In my case, I stood on the sponge with a friend while another guy dragged it across, and right before we got there I slapped my friend off so I could have the stuff to myself. That, essentially, is coopetition.
The developers love to hide goodies that you have to find later. I didn't notice all the stuff I could eventually collect until the third playthrough. If you've ever played Portal, and you know that usually there is more than one way to beat a level, the same applies here. The more difficult task you accomplish, the more collectibles they reward you with.
At any point, you can bring up a sticker which is basically a live image recorded from your PS Eye. When you stick the image on a surface, it takes a picture at that moment, so you can tack yourself onto the walls in a level(or whatever else you feel like doing).

Emoting

Emoting is awesome. Using the d-pad, you can select three different degrees of sadness, anger, happiness, and fear. For example, you press up to smile, press it again to smile big, and press it again to be ecstatic with your tongue hanging out.
If you hold R2, the right stick becomes a controller for your right hand. The same goes for L2, the left stick, and the left hand.
The sixaxis controls which direction your head is facing, and it was surprisingly intuitive.
If you click and hold L3, the sixaxis controls your hips instead of your head.
Using a combination of these, I made my guy do a pretty ******* hula dance. I forced him to do it, though, so he was pretty scared at the time.

Tutorial Level Video
I apologize for the short length of the video, but it's the best I could do, as I was asked to put away the camera.

To Sum it Up

LittleBigPlanet is so in depth, so customizable, so personal that there's no way to sum it up in words. You could say it is our generation's Mario; 20, 30 years from now you'll be telling your children that you got the chance to grow up with this game, and that's an experience you don't want to miss. All I can say is, if you are still on the fence about buying this game, don't hesitate.

wait....

if holding L3 + Sixaxis = hips and Sixaxis = Head... you can't shake your head and hips at the same time....

well atleast logs burn, was afraid of the physics not being that good (with the fire and ice log not melting each other video)

But if you could.. They'de be moving in the same directions anyway and it would look stupid. If they did move both at the same time, people would complain that you cant move them separately.

But yeah, if (for example) Hips was clicked L3 and stick movement, and head was sixaxis, it would be **** hard.. but funny lookin The emotes seems plenty enough to keep me entertained...

I hope theres some trophies like "Do 50 comical victory dances" or something and OFCOURSE the physics are good. What LittleBigPlanet are you living on? xD One of the game's main focus is physics

BTW - hour long level? Did someone really mention that as a possibility?

Sorry, stuck away from my digital camera at the moment, but I will do it tomorrow. I apologize again for the wait.

I did this for you guys, not for some nonphysical online 'popularity', but thanks, lol.

No, I don't. Let me put that right here:

Anyone and everyone may post anything I put here anywhere they like, but I would love it if I could at least be credited for my work.
Anyway, yes, there is a definite possibility for an hour-long level. There is NO limit to the physical length to a level, just to the number of items on it. The larger the crater on the moon, the more relaxed the limit for items.

So we each get our won moon right? Know how many craters there are? And also, I asked media molecule but haven't had a response yet...

Is there any possibility of making a sort've rec room (not a level) where you can have more then 4 sackboys in? I think its unlikely, but it would be cool. Then we could have like a forum room or something.

Thank you for the Hands-on. You said that you can give rewards for completing certain feats in the level. Did you see this applied? If you know, does it mean that you can set certain objectives to a level, which are then checked after you complete the level? For example, could an objective be playing the level using a certain specific route or killing a certain enemy on a level, or doing both?

It would be nice to be able to set trophy-like objectives like 'kill all enemies and finish the game under 10mins using the most difficult route on the level'.

Linque, what I got from that was the better collectable items in bubbles were placed at the end of the harder routes, and you can win ones at the end of each level. I think you can give people a rating on how well they did in a level, either bronze silver or gold, and give them better items for each step up. I think you can specify what requirements for each medal, i.e. gold would be collect all collectables, kill all enemies and do it under a certain time. silver would be easier and bronze easier still.. if you take half an hour on a level that could easily be done in 10 minutes, and you dont many collectables or kill many enemies, you could get no reward.

I think another factor could be number of deaths... (This is all assumed from a video or 2 that I have seen, so I could be very wrong)

Anyways, 5 starred this thread

Yes, each player gets their own moon. I don't know for certain how many craters there are, but from seeing the moon I'd guess at least 10, maybe 12.

And, you can make a rec room where you just screw around, but you cannot exceed the 4 player limit.

It would be nice to be able to set trophy-like objectives like 'kill all enemies and finish the game under 10mins using the most difficult route on the level'.

Yes, I did. For example, when you kill an enemy, you bounce up after landing on their brain. At one point during the level, there was a piece of sponge hanging from a rope, and you had to time it so you could kill the enemy then grab hold of the sponge, which would then ascend to more collectable items. In this sense, you can reward players for taking a more difficult, or even hidden, path.

As far as I know you cannot set trophy-like accomplishments for each level, but then again I did not ask. I do know this game supports trophies, so we'll be able to unlock those.

What you could do, however, is right before a more difficult path converges with the easier path again, you could place collectibles to award only those players who managed to get through the more difficult path. You could also just make multiple routes through a level, so a player would have to play through more than once to earn everything.

Alright, thanks for the answer. I guess it's not that big of a deal, I can always put a few levers in the level in places you can only reach by accomplishing something, then have those levers open up some gates at the end of the level, where the reward would be.

Would be cool to be able to set objectives though. And pretty easy to implement, so hopefully it'll be possible.

You CAN
the gold and silver and bronze thing wasn't a guess or rumor, I did see that in a video. I was just taking guesses at whet requirements you can set for each one.. Time, number of collectables collected, enemies killed and number of deaths. Ive also seen the scoreboard present you with your time and percentage of things on that level collected, so they're more likely things.

Yeah I know about the time limit, death limit and items collected, but I was wondering if the objectives could be assigned to certain, more complex triggers, such as killing a specified enemy or x number of enemies or just stepping on a certain switch on a level.2008-07-27 20:32:00

...

I think they will allow consideration of amount of enemies killed, but the other triggers may be too complex to assign to the medals and rewards given by the medals, which is why you can use alternative methods.

I mean, the time your jump to grab the sponge thing was good, and you could also box an enemy in a room and you cant progress until you've killed it, with the reward on the route right after it's dead (Or at the end of the level if its the only route)

Sure, but even without the possibility of rewarding things like that at the end of the level, you can still reward it during the level. Thats the great thing about LBP... I would actually prefer to do it during the level, but yeah, it may become possible. Theres been some heavy rumors of water being available at launch due to an item description saying that it floats.. they could bring more new features out like this one, sure.

Oh yes, everything looked top notch. There was lag when loading levels and when everyone accessed their own menus, but Eric assured me that a)this was a very early build of the game, and b)by release all of those bugs would be ironed out. I mean, the fact that they had their game up and running cleanly 3 months before release is impressive. Especially since the build of the game is probably 2-3 months old.

Awesome write-up thanks!

I have a 21" Monitor about 7 feet away from where I sit, do you think it'll be a problem for me using the "popit" menu? Cause the icons seem fairly transparent and smallish ;/

Yeah, it was fairly easy to use. We didn't do any complex stuff like microchips, but we did mess with the three-way switches. I helped build a Monster Truck(a fairly crappy one) and we drove it over some burning logs and rough terrain. Took us about five minutes total.

Cause the icons seem fairly transparent and smallish ;/ No, because the popit menu scales up to fill the screen on the right or left side. It takes up about a fourth or fifth of the screen. The icons are big enough, and they have accompanying text that should help.

Thanks for the reply. Now I have another question about your monster truck. I saw in the video with the sled race about 2:20 into it that the sleds didn't start moving until both groups were in. What do you have to do to start a vehicle, push a button on the controller or something on the object that you have built?

Thanks for the reply. Now I have another question about your monster truck. I saw in the video with the sled race about 2:20 into it that the sleds didn't start moving until both groups were in. What do you have to do to start a vehicle, push a button on the controller or something on the object that you have built?
My guess is it is some sort of chip that detects when you've grabbed on and propels the sled forward.

Hey, just because I have more lottery tickets then you doesnt mean I have the winning one! A guy with only 5 posts could win, and I'd be happy for him!

I'm jealous of you!! I live in SD and didn't go 'cause I don't like comics [too geek for me, too]. I know LBP was going to be there, but I though it wouldn't be worth it... man, I want to buy that bag, lol.2008-08-14 10:05:00

Awesome! I am often worried about over-hype in games, but you seem to be pretty satisfied, so that is great.2008-09-03 01:24:00
