Want: diagnostics

You all know how this feels. You're trundling away on a level, unpause to test something... and from somewhere off-screen: *crrrrrrrrrack*.

I wonder if MM could implement a feature that, after you rewind to before the breakage, the create mode highlights what broke to make it easier to find.

I'd also love to see wires change colour when you select a switch to make tracing what's going where simpler.

That would be actually near impossible for Mm to implement that into the game. How would the engine know if that's what was supposed to happen or not? Although it would be a handy feature, it's not too difficult to just hover around the level and unpause at different parts to see what broke.2010-06-01 18:49:00

This actually sounds easy to implement, a simple system of the game showing you what broke.2010-06-01 19:10:00

ziminvader, it would probably be fairly trivial actually. The engine gets triggered to play the CRACKING SOUND OF DOOM AND WORK BEING FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET; all it would need to do is highlight the area where the crack was triggered.2010-06-01 20:15:00

What are you talking about? XD game knows what element "cracked" and it can show that in rewend since every object got it's id. I seen much complicated debugging (this is how we call this operation) solutions then that idea. Also i think as "Game platform" LBP2 should have some debugging tools, specially to logic

To further what has already been said: The system would not need to know whether or not something was supposed to have broken, merely that it did. At the point of breaking, if in create mode, the engine would place a flag with enough information for it to recover the game at that point in the timeline, should the user wish to view it, much in the same way as it currently stores rewind points. It's up to the user to decide whether or not it was supposed to happen.

it's not too difficult to just hover around the level and unpause at different parts to see what broke.

I have had many occasions where this was simply not possible, due to the scope (size and complexity) of my creations and the way in which they interact with the player.

In addition to this feature, it would be nice to be able to replay your actions from the last point in the rewind, but with a free camera view. Essentially getting the game to rewind and then make a sackbot do what you did, so you can zoom out, look elsewhere etc.

I'd love to see a whole range of diagnostic tools, hidden away in the menus for the more advanced creators. And some form of visual debugging for the new logic is going to be a must for many creators as some of the subtleties of circuit design will be lost on some who have got by so far by being able to see the parts moving and used that as an intuitive method for debugging.

I suppose I stand corrected, then, and look rather foolish right now...
I'm not a hardcore creator, let alone have finished any levels to publish, so I haven't experienced the instance in which I couldn't locate the source of the malfunction. I just see this as very unlikely to be included in LBP2.

lol, you know when rtm posts, he weill either fully back up a theory, or royally defeat it.

As for the feature ya it would be kinda nice thing to add, tho i doubt it will tho.

Ahh, sorry. That wasn't my intention, I was just trying to describe how such a system might work. It's funny, you can absolutely tell what kind of mindset I'm in when I start using the word "users" to refer to players/creators

But you can't feed him a mushroom omelete!!!!

Ahem: I agree with Rtm , but I also think that a simple (!) and then a thing that'd ask you whether you'd like to replay the breakage
