I hate scoreboards!

Archive: 24 posts

Since Josh's retro games thread a few weeks back, I've been feeling very nostalgic and figured I'd have a go at recreating Pitfall on the Atari 2600. I'm dead chuffed with how it's turned out, as other than the tell-tale Sackboy silhouette running the gauntlet it's pretty much spot on, but now I need to ruin it all and stick a giant 3D cardboard television at the end!

I've always had issue with the scoreboards, but at least I usually have the option of blending it in with the scenery, but considering this level looks very true to the original in full pixelated glory, you can imagine how out of place it looks!

So anyway, I'm a complete noobus when it comes to glitches and was wondering.. is there any way at all to change the surrounding cardboard frame of the scoreboard to a different material? Or remove it entirely even? I know you can lose the base, but I'd really like the scores set in a glass frame, since the backdrop of the level is made of glass.

I'm not liking my chances, so open to any suggestions you may have.

EDIT: Sorry, just realised this should have probably gone in 'Help', feel free to move.

I'm pretty sure you can't. but you can resize it though.

Is the entire level in silhouette? if so why not just add pix-elated "curves" around it, you know the phail attempts at round objects made out of squares XD2010-05-31 22:59:00

Yeah, been trying a few different sizes, but they all looks pants tbh.

I did have the idea of maybe creating an absolutely giant one so the frame was off the screen, but is there anyway to hide the scores? I know stickering over them doesn't work..

Gawd, I really hope they've done away with them in LBP2 lol.

EDIT: @Littlebigdude Thanks - That's probably what I'll end up doing tbh, but thought I'd check here first.

You can remove the bottom of the scoreboard completely (where you stand on) And you can try to hide the cardboard pieces around the scoreboard in your scenery, or something like that. I've seen people do it a couple times, and it looks really nice.2010-05-31 23:06:00

Hey, i made stone scoreboards by using a cut out scoreboard frame from thin thick material, then slided it over the front. Add me on Psn if you want one2010-06-01 01:15:00

Can't you put theck in front of the scoreboard?
You wont see the scoreboard because it's thin.

But I don't know

Hmmm, I was going to suggest using the compression tool (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24434-Merging-Objects-or-Materials-aka-Compression-Tool&highlight=compression+tool), to merge the outline of the scoreboard with a slightly thicker material. However, it seems that the material of the scoreboard is actually thicker (visually) than all the normal materials*. I'd go with the theck (checkpoint thick) overlay idea.

*When overlaying materials, some are visibly thicker than others, despite them being the same physical thickness.

You could dress it like a retro TV and have an Atari 2600 in front of it? So it's like you come out of the game, which would explain why it looks non glassy.

Actually i don't think I've ever seen a scoreboard made to look like a TV or computer monitor.

Does it work if you put it on a piston so that as soon as it's activated it gets whipped off to one side? You might be able to disguise it just long enough for players not to notice....

You get the invisible wall around it though, so whipping it off to the side would squish sackpersons and then they would respawn off to the side.

Destroy (or turn off?) the last checkpoint and kill the player (with a The End sign stuck to a big invisible block of stone perhaps). That should force the "Restart" "Quit" pop-up to appear. 2010-06-01 17:13:00

Um.. theck?

Like I said, I'm absolutely clueless! I'm aware of the term but wouldn't have the faintest idea how to make it. Haha, I told you I don't get out of Create much Alec, I've been living under a rock in there for a year and a half.

Jules, I had that exact same idea actually (Great minds and all that!), but couldn't figure out a nice smooth way to go from the Pitfall screen to the TV. To be fair, I'm being ridiculously fussy, especially considering anyone under 30 is likely to 1 star it anyway lol.

Thanks for the other suggestions guys, I have the Compression Tool already, so I'll go have a tinker with that and see if I can come up with something.

Are we still able to change the inner screen of the scoreboard to glass by any chance? I know I've seen a few scores with stickered pictures behind them in the past, but don't know how to do it, or if it's been patched even..

Not exactly sure what I could do with that, but it would be nice to have every possible option to hand.

that would be an interesting idea! You could create your own fake scoreboard and have an 'end' button!

That made me really laugh out loud

It's possible to still change the inner screen of the scoreboard, I know how to do it so if you want, I can show it whenever you want to

This is the second time I've been shocked that you don't know how to use one of the glitches (the first was when you described the elaborate method you used to make your spinning pole mechanics invisible instead of just using solid invisible material). I suppose it's a tribute to your abilities that you're able to create such amazing stuff (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21790-Lara-Cloth-Tomb-Raider-Helgardh&highlight=helgardh) without using glitches.

Anyway, here's Incinerator's guide on theck and thack (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=26490-Theck-amp-Thack-Sublayer-Guide). A bit long-winded, but it has everything you need to know about it.

Thanks dude!

I've never liked glitches tbh, I'm too scared of what they might do. Even if I've just been messing about with a glitch in create, I'll generally delete the level entirely in the off chance it's left some dodgy code that's gonna slap me in the face at a later date lol.

That said, I did finally succumb to the dark side and add two extra layers to my last level! You'd have been proud!

Cheers for the link anyway - Will have a read.

I must be missing something here.

How can you not like scoreboards ? They're an absolute necessity for players to be able to finish the level. It doesn't really matter a jot what they look like to be honest. If you're that fussed about it though I don't see why any glitches at all should be necessary. Why can't you just build a normal layer in front of it to look how you want and just leave the screen part showing through the middle ?

Tripletremelo always hides his scoreboards with a layer in front of it. Maybe looking at his Rube Goldberg-like levels to have an idea what I'm talking about 2010-06-01 21:21:00

Maybe not to you lol.

I'm forever striving to 'de-LBP-ize' my creations as much as possible, so chucking a huge cardboard TV at the end of a realistic looking level or whatever, can really ruin the atmosphere. In this case, I've achieved a convincing 2D effect and switching over to 3D at the end will ruin the illusion. I would normally try and hide it in a layer of scenery, but the level's made entirely of glass, so there's no hiding anything.

@Chuck_18mp - Cheers, I'm aware of his stuff I'll go have another look.

I'm sorry for suggesting the use of a glitch, but maybe you could put one of those walk-throught walls in front of the checkpoint? That way it SHOULD activate the scoreboard without the player ever seeing it. I'm not sure if that's possible though.2010-06-06 17:50:00

Have you found a solution yet?

Not touched it in a week tbh, it's been put on hold for Red Dead Redemption. However I did have a brief mess about with the L2(?) trick where you press X dead fast to get material into the same layer as the scoreboard and that seemed like a doable option. Tried the Compression Tool but the lag was a bit too scary for my liking lol.

Hehe, no worries, I'd already gotten used to the fact that I'd be unable to get the effect I wanted without using a glitch anyway, so will definitely give it a try, thank you!

You know, you can vanish the scoreboard bottom by materialchanger->dissolve-->switch--> well..dissolve. By using a onetime, unlimited-timed emitter, you can resize it as emitted object. So in the end, you put that small thin (well, don't know but defn. less than 3 thick layers as before) thing behind some wall, letting sackboy walk in front of that wall, that should trigger the board. Wouldn't that work?2010-06-09 22:29:00
