Lil' Racer *** Spotlighted!!! *** Now With Scenic Route Version!! ***

Archive: 24 posts

Lil' RacerVelcroJonze
It ain't the Indy 500.
I have became a little obsessed with race levels here lately, and one of my favorite things to do is to DL all the Total Wipeout levels on cool pages and try and get the high score. So, I decided to do one myself, but not a total wipeout level.

Chickadee had a race segment in it but this is a straight up race level.

I would like to thank ThisIsInsane for the inspiration, his race levels are my favorites, and hopefully this will be half as good as one of his.

Feedback is welcome, and if you have any problems, please let me know.

Thanks!!

-VJ

---------------------------------------------------

I have added another version of this, it's without the race. Take your time and enjoy the scenery! I also added some more bubble chains. See if you can get them all!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beautiful photos by the great Domik12, Thank you so much!!!

Were you expecting feedback from me? (Well I have an essay for you)

Wow... You've impressed me again VelcroJonze.
You know how I said one of your levels were different in a way.
Well, I didn't get that feeling for your past 2 levels.
Although, after seeing this level, you brought a tear in my eye (not really) because you gave me the feeling of something different and new again.
I'm just deeply impressed on how well this level was, and it was surely something different to experience.

Well, time to cut to the chase.

When I first saw this level, I read "Lil' Racer". My first thought was, "Oh, probably a bad racing level"
So then I read the creator of the forum, and Oh my! it's from VelcroJonze. Only one of the best creators of coarse!
So, then I thought this "Race" level was seriously going to be a "Race" as in with cars, type of level.
I played it, and WOW!!! This is no bad level, nor race car level. THIS LEVEL WAS FANTASTIC!!!

Like I mentioned before, this level was a new experience again. It felt something I wasn't expecting coming from you.
Something different and new puts a smile on my face. I honestly thought this level wasn't going to be as good as I imagined.
Anyways, this is what I liked about the level.

First off:
I enjoyed the fact that it was a "Beat the clock" race.
I enjoyed the intro with the waterfall.
I enjoyed the theme to it's very last. I've noticed, but on almost every level I've played of yours, you can create a good theme/color scheme to it.
I enjoyed the point bubbles coming in your way as you try to reach the finish.
Oh, and I enjoyed something you should always expect.... THE CATAPULT THINGY!!!!
I enjoyed the platform obstacles.

Your levels are just terrific man. It gets me thinking, you are an awesome platformer maker.
You can create fun obstacles, great mechanics, and know your way of using materials.
You know, I was wondering, have you ever thought of making a level that's not platformesque?

Anyways, this is something you shouldn't expect from me, but the level was a tad bit short.
Although, this was a race against the clock, so, I can understand bro!

Anyways, time to rate you...

Length: N/A (Who cares about length here )
Creativity: 5/5 (The materials and color scheme make the level OUTSTANDING!)
Corner Editing: 5/5 (It's a basic level, but you still took your time to do it, now that's what you call NICE)
Theme: 5/5 (Landscape was how it's suppose to be)
Story: N/A (I won't grade you here )

Total: 20/15
Your probably thinking, "How did I get 20 out of 15?"
It's called a plus five to your score for just impressing me LARGELY!

Anyways, you earned yourself a 5 star :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart <3

Until we meet again,
-Spark

@ Ali

Thanks!! I love the waterfalls.

I first saw ragged use it in Jangle. My only problem is creates lag later in the level if you don't use a kill switch somewhere.

Later Buddy!!

@ Spark

Thanks for your feedback man!! I love impressing you. You are usually one of the first to leave feedback in my threads and it is what I go by if I need to republish or not. I know that if you like it, 95% of the community will like it too.

I read Jackofcourse saying to pick a few materials that look good together and go with that. I mainly used basic wood on this level and a little dark wood in the back plane. But you can do a lot with the basic materials with a little corner editing, right?

I am going to do an RPG one day, I am not a good story teller though. I might do something like Ali's Sackula, you know, a level based on an established story. I haven't figured out what it is yet. I love comic books, so it might be something like that.

Platformesque is my word of the day, I am going to use that in a sentence at least five times tomorrow!

Later Brother!!

Hey Velcro!

My opening statement: I thought this was going to be a level with a car in it when I first read the title....

As I entered the level I expected myself to be catapulted to the starting flag, but instead I saw an awesome watefall! Nice job with the waterfall, first one I've seen with the water ripple material. I loved the materials you used! Especially since you made the Basic Wood not look boring in a level! Fantastic job. The bubbles before the race started made me hyped about getting all the bubbles I could.

As the race started, I zoomed up the platforms got the bubbles and headed down. The whole race was filled with bubbles, I was freaking out which way to go first, and which bubbles to get first. I tried getting the highscore, but since the race timer was ticking, I couldn't make a good route to get a good point multiplier. I always love the secret rooms in your level that shower me with bubbles. Always feels good to get a reward for sneaking around in a level.

I loved this stage mostly because it was a good race against the clock and also because there was a lot of jumping down and up across multiple layers. You have to be the creator that makes good use of all the layers. I never get tired of switching from layer to layer. I played this level 7 times because it was fun to play and I always try to get that high score. Someone will probably top it soon, *cough* memorex *cough*....

Anyways awesome level, 5 stars and a heart

TheNerd, Thanks for your feedback!!

Glad you liked my new level. I actually thought a few times when making this "TheNerd will like this part!" You are always on the scoreboard of my levels and I really dig that. You played it that many times? Hahaha!! I do the same thing on some levels, I get down right obsessed sometimes. I was checking my level out and saw you had the high score by ten thousand points!! I will not even try to get the high score on this one. I accidentally did that on Sugar Roots, and I almost republished it because of that.

Thanks again my friend!!

Hidy Ho VJ! I was very excited to see that you had a new level, and I LOVE this style of level, so I was even more excited once I read the description.

This level perfectly combines the things that are great about your design style and the things that make race levels awesome. The combos were perfectly placed, there was an very rewarding secret, as well as a few other secrets, and all sorts of fun things. The level required perfect platforming to continue chains, and that is exactly what the style needs.

The scenery was just great as well. The level started with a great waterfall, and just kept looking good!

It took 3 tries to pick up the top score, but I managed to get it after that Awesome work VJ!

Hi Velcro!

I am very late to the overall Feedback Party here on LBPC and am now trying to get back to it. Therefore i didnt read through this thread or any previous tips.

The Feedback:
You created a really fun, good looking mini race challenge!
I loved the gameplay of this little masterpiece! To be honest i got kinda bored with your last level (Jimmys room). I thought i already knew everything cause you have your own very special style and showed it in several similar levels now. I had the feeling you should move on a bit (no offense!). I think this level shows where you should go with your style. The race aspect fits perfectly and i think the bubble chains work even better in this one. This is your best level so far in my opinion. I know its a race and it shouldnt be too long but a little bit more would be nice.
I gave you 5 stars and a heart and i am looking forward to your new ideas!

@ Domik - Thanks for the great feedback and the wonderful photos. I always am glad that you like my levels and a big congratulations on getting featured. That is a huge honor and you deserve it for such a great level you made.

Thanks again my friend!

--------------

@ Himoks - Thanks again for playing one of my levels and you played in seven times!! That is awesome.

I really think this is a fun level too. Maybe my personal favorite so far.

Thanks again!!

-----------------

@ Poo - I am so happy that you liked my new level. Getting praise from guy's like you, Taffey, Spark, Arrestor, and Jeff is the best!! I know when you great creators like you guy's enjoy my level I did a good job.

I think the bubble chains are a lot of fun too, I almost went with bubbles placed out so that you could have one continuous chain going through the entire level, but I thought that would be overkill, not to mention cause some lag eventually...however, I still might try something like that one day.

Thanks again Buddy!! You are working on Destiny II right?

--------------------

@ Famous - Thank you for playing another of my levels, I am glad you liked the design. In truth this design was very organic in a way, I mean I didn't have a plan going into it, I just kind of ran on instinct through the entire create process.

Those combos are a lot of fun but are a little maddening when you miss one you know you should have had.

Thanks again for the feedback my friend, and congratulations on your spotlighted level!!

-----------------

@ Arrestor - Wow!! I am so glad you liked my level.

I have always been a fan of your work. Your levels are awesome!! I hope you are working on something new. I came here in February and you had just published Trapped Transition, the best Portal concept level ever!! I am glad you are back!!

Thanks again!!

Hey Vj
I am going to be the devils advocate here and say that I thought the whole wood on wood thing was just ok. I'm only being honest man. I have the same issue with Jackofcourse. While it is true that the minimal material style really suits the puzzle platformer style, I find it kinda meh. After awhile, ones levels begin to kinda all look the same. Now that I got that out of the way, your level YAY! I like your take on the race genre, it was really fun. Kinda like if one of your Fort sugar levels mated with a racetrack, and had this level as a baby. I'm totally digging that you are trying all kinds of genres and stuff. Can't wait to see whats next. You better not be lying about the possible RPG from you, that would rock. Later dude

Thanks Kaiju!! Yeah, I know what your saying about the all wood thing. I guess it all comes down to personal taste. I am very influenced by Jack's work. I love the way he uses materials, but at the same time I really enjoy a level that is very colorful and stickered out. Ialways dig your honesty when it comes to feedback, it makes me think about different ways to make levels. If it weren't for you Jimmy's Room would have never been.

And I am totally serious about doing an rpg, I have something in the works right now with another creator and it is going to be really cool. I will let you know more when I have some decent information.

Thanks again for playing my level and your awesome feedback Buddy!

Haha this is actually a really fun, cute level. It certainly has it's charm and I was sad when it was cut so short
I'd like to see a race like this integrated within another level just so it could have more length to it. Still, this level stands on its own really well and is amazing fun to play. I'm not so good at these levels so my score was quite low, but I'll make sure to play again and keep improving. You've created a really cute level here with totaly appeal (and a fantastic waterfall too!)

:star::star::star::star::star: and a cute <3

@ Coxy - Thanks so much for playing my little level. I am so glad you enjoyed it, I sure had fun making it. I am sorry you were sad when it ended so soon. I just published another version without the race aspect. Give it a try if you get bored.

Thanks again Coxy, Your new level is awesome!!

-------------------------

@ Frogboy!! - Hey Buddy!! Thanks for saying it looks good. Domik12 made those beautiful pictures. I used mostly basic wood and little dark wood, but I got to work with the corner editing to give it a dynamic look. I hope you get to play it soon and I hope you like it.

Later my friend!!

Hello-

Whennever I download a level from VelcroJonze I know that I'm in for a treat. This level had all of your usual awesome bubble combos, perfect corner-editing, and fun gameplay elements. I think this is my favorite level of yours. I liked the choice of materials for this, I think it hypnotized me, it hypnotized me so much, that I got the high-score with 24830 on the scenic route version (my PSN for the PSP is Colt4547, but it's X-FROGBOY-X for the PS3).

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and <3ed.

I enjoyed the scenic route as much as I enjoyed the race against the clcok version. Very cool changes to the materials and the waterfall looked a bit lighter in color. I almost got to 30,000 points, but I fell inside a gas pit once. Oh well, it was still awesome! As I promised, 5 stars and a heart.2010-06-06 01:42:00

I downloaded and played both versions of your level. They were both great levels, but of course I liked the one with more bubbles. I had fun shooting and scooting, flying and dying through your crazy level (Rhyming? What means this?). Somehow your levels have this amazing charm about them, you don't really need to decorate or do anything too fancy and yet they are still classic/amazing. I am glad to have discovered you as a creator (took way too long considering I prowled gamefaqs from day one of this game). 5 stars and a heart for you and your torturous sack abusive levels.2010-06-08 05:18:00
