Playstation Question

Gunna need a smart person for this..
I'm going to upgrade my PS3 from a 40gb to a 320gb harddrive. My question is, since the 40gb is NOT backward compatible but apparently 320gb is, would the upgrade make it compatible? Or are 320s only backward compatible if upgraded from a 20gb,60gb or 80gb? Crossing fingers...

I think its the disc reading hardware inside the PS3 that determines if it's backwards compatible, not the hard drive. So, I don't think so (fairly certain)

for example, In Europe we have 60GB models that are the only models in europe that are backwards compatible AND they were discontinued. We have a 40GB version and soon an 80GB version, these aren't backwards compatible and won't be no matter how much you upgrade the hard drive.

Sorry buddy

And for the record, I have a 60GB model

Not sure if you are talking about backward compatible with PS2 and PS1 games, but the hard drive is not what makes them backward compatible it is the chip that is included that emulates the games for the PS3. Now from what i remember the 60GB is like 99% BC while the 80GB was like 95% because it started to use software to emulate which is not as good as a physical chip, but made the cost of the system come down. Now for me I always liked the BC and do not understand why they have taken it out. Back to the question though the upgrade of a hard drive only upgrades the storage space not functionality aside from maybe if you put in a HD with 7200 rpm which reads a little faster but is hard to tell any better performance.

Hope that helps and maybe someone that knows more about the system can help yeah.

Bigger hard drive won't make your Playstation3 PS2 games compatible. It's a hardware issue.

It's said that if you will to change your hard drive to a bigger one, it should be a 5400 rpm model due to overheating problem (faster HD exhales more heat), and sometimes such disk just don't work with PS3 like it should. Ano no, theres no difference when using 7200 rpm drive in PS3.

PS. The best option is to buy PS2. It's very cheap these times, and remember that not 100% of PS2 games works on backward-compatible PS3.

Greetings

yeah I thought the 7200 didn't do much of anything. Personally I really like having the BC, when Warhawk was coming out i wanted to play the original so i popped out my old copy (PS1) and played for hours... IT makes me mad that they don't even offer it in any of their sku's i would happily pay a few more bucks for it. I mean who wants 3 machines set up just to play some of the great classics. FYI just bought Shadow of The Colossus and would love if they updated it and made a new PS3 version2008-07-26 01:48:00

Nice advice. Another little thing, alepasztet, when you finish a post and write "Greetings"... well, that means Hello, so it's kind of odd. You could put "Thanks" or "goodbye" or any words to that effect in its place

Ahh yeah, it always sounded weird to me when I placed it at the end. Thanks for letting me know.

Harddrive has nothing to do with ps1/2 games, its the technology inside the ps3.2008-07-26 16:36:00

Similarly, I'm thinking of upgrading sometime soon. Just have to find a good hard drive. Want to go around 240 or so gigs. PhunBox, how much did the 320 cost you?2008-07-27 00:07:00

$140.00 + Tax CDN. It's probably close to the same in the US. Give or take $10.00. Go on Ebay and you can get a 500gb for like $250.00 US. Be sure it is 2.5" 5400rpm. 7200rpm might make it run a little hot.2008-07-27 01:14:00
