How to create a great spark effect

Archive: 21 posts

Hey everybody

I discovered this technique quite a while ago and thought I would post it for those of you who don't know how to do it. Its the same effect as seen in the absolutely outstanding level 'Post Apocolyptic' by Antposteller (where at the beggining you blow up a sentry turret and sparks shoot out). This might not be the exact same technique that Antposteller used but its close enough and looks pretty darn good.

So lets get down to business...

Step 1)
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/theamilien_photo/APhoto_4-2.jpg
Create a thin circle about half a sack small (or that's half a sack big for you optimists out there) - it doesn't matter what material just as long as its not metal. Take into account that youll be firing it out of an emitter - so if you want a nice sort of 'floatly' looping arc use cardboard.

Step 2)
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/theamilien_photo/APhoto_5-3.jpg
Next you'll need a theck* circle and you'll need to put it in front of the thin piece of cardboard. (I've made my theck circle out of wood so that it wont be to light or to heavy when falling through the air.

Step 3)
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/theamilien_photo/APhoto_6-3.jpg
Stick a motor bolt on the theck piece, set it to invisible and crank it to a speed of 60. Also, stick two emitters on.

Step 4)
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/theamilien_photo/APhoto_7-3.jpg
Now you'll need to pick the colour of the sparks you want. I'd suggest orange or yellow LED's for explosions and blue LED's for electrical sparks. You'll need to set the emitters to these settings:

Lin Velocity : 5.0
Ang Velocity: Default
Freq: 0.2 (you can experiment with this but 0.2 looks the best in my opinion)
Lifetime: About 1.5 (again experiment - its how long you want the sparks to stick around for)
Everything else leave the same except for visibility - change it to invisible.

As well as this, make sure that when you choose the location to spawn the sparks out of the emitter, its in the same layer as the cardboard circle and also they are spawned quite far away from the circle. This is because when we shrink it to make it invisible, the distance of where the LED's are emitted also shrink , so if the emmiter is trying to emit the LED's into the cardboard - it can't.

After that all you have to do is capture the entire thing and shrink it to make it invisible.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT shrink it by using the analogue sticks, you have to shrink it using emmitters.

Capture the entire thing and put it through an emitter, when you select the 'spark circle' shrink it as much as you can and then press X to confirm it. Capture the shrunk circle and repeat the same steps until it goes invisible.

You'll, probably have to switch to play mode to see if you've shrank it enough to make it invisible.

And there you go!

All you have to do is put the invisible spark circle into an emitter and trigger it when you want to create that epic explosion effect you've been trying to get.

Why not also experiment with it? Why not use it to create a nice fountain effect where it looks like water is spewing out of the top or maybe even you could stick flowers on the LED's and make it seem like flowers are falling in an enchanted forest.

Have Fun !

* If your not sure what theck material is is basically a thin layer that exists in the thick layers. Just search theck layers and your bound to find some. If you really cant find any PM me and ill send you some.

tried it and it works wonderfully, especially when coupled with a very brief yet bright light and a camera shake for a fantastic explosion. the electric sparks look great too, especially when their lifetime is short. thanks for this tutorial! i'll definitely be using this in a future level!2010-05-29 21:26:00

Thank you for showing me how to this. Ever since I played "'Post Apocolyptic" I had tried a bunch of different methods to get that cool effect but never got that true "spark" effect. I had given up trying until I read your post, personally I think you nailed it.

Thanks again.. Cheers

Can't you achieve a similar effect by just adding some spin to the emitted objects? That way you wouldn't need the theck material nor would you have to use a motorbolt.2010-07-25 16:41:00

I tried that before I tried this technique, however using an emitters angular velocity just isnt as good as using a motorbolt. The motorbolt makes the sparks look more organic and less organised. 2010-07-26 16:04:00

I might have done it wrong but the effect it gave wasn't exactly what I was hoping for 2010-07-27 10:26:00
