How to make good scenery?

Archive: 8 posts

I'd like to add scenery to my new level, but I have no idea how/what to add. How do you make good scenery?2010-05-28 20:37:00

Well, It all depends on what type of level your making.

If its a winter-y type level, you'll probably want to make some snow covered brush and vegetation.
Also you could use emiters to emit small bits of the snow sponge to make it look like it's snowing.
Making good scenery that compliments the level takes a little work. You might not get the hang of it at first,
but over time you'll be able to develop a good sense of what looks good and what doesn't.

Some tips would be you should use the corner tool A LOT when making scenery, it really helps. A LOT.
Don't use like 50 different materials. Try to to stick with like 5 different materials that go good together.
For instance, the green floral sponge and the dark wood, brown wood, light wood, etc. like quite nice
together.

Hope this helps

There's quite a few tutorials on making good scenery in the tutorials section, like here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21136-quot-How-to-make-good-scenery-quot-tutorial-videos-forest-and-logic!), or here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=17195-The-quot-How-To-Make-Your-Level-Look-Good-quot-Video-Series) for example. There are plenty more than just those though, you should check them out!2010-05-28 21:09:00

One word - CORNER EDITOR (well, that's two, but "one word" sounded more dramatic )

The corner editor is invaluable for making awesome scenery - it lets you have so much more control over your object's edges. I've used it to make branches, cracks, bridges, grass ... the possibilities are literally infinite.

Also, you might want to try gradient stickers. They can look tacky if you can see their edges, but making them bigger and splurging one or two over a large area can give a nice effect if used in the right way.

If you're stuck for ideas, Google your level's theme and look up images. There will likely be lots of pictures there to inspire you.

Incorporate your scenery with your gameplay! This will give your level its uniqueness. Finding new ways to make something like a branch, or a cobra, into a piece of gameplay will really make your level stand out from the crowd.

Hope this helps!

It certainly is. If you're building a level underwater you may find this helpful. Set up a piston with magnetic key moving towards and away from a magnetic switch set to speed. Then, make some LEDs (the thin layer ones), attach some dark matter to them then hide them in the thin layers between the edges of your underwater passage. Now, attach the magnetic switch to each of the lights - they will fade on and off to create the atmosphere of underwater light. Sorry, a bit random, but it may be of use, you never know 2010-05-29 01:53:00

Usually, when I try to make plantlife type scenery objects, I'll just start off with a square of cardboard, then corner edit it to something prety. I never try to smear out shapes that I want. I hope this little tip helps.2010-05-29 23:21:00
