HazardRacers - A Race of Skill

HazardRacers - A Race of SkillSunrise-moon
HazardRacers is an innovative race-survival mix. This level, unlike most other LittleBigPlanet races, actually takes SKILL to beat quickly. There's a tutorial, single-player mode, and two-player mode. See you at the races!
I had a lot of fun creating this level. Be sure to bring a friend when you play- the multiplayer is one of the best parts!

Here we go!

The Good stuff :

- A very quirky race level. When I read 'Race level that takes skill' my immediate thought was of motorcross bikes where you had to very precisely go over rough terrain with controlled bursts of R1... But it was nothing like that! A very cunning vehicle indeed.

- A good basis for a multiplayer race level, most race levels don't make sense, all any player is waiting for is the physics for their opponents car to skip a beat for a second and randomly slow them down so they can win by a microsecond. Not the case, this race level feels like those horse race betting arcade games you see at sea sides, lots of catching up and falling behind.

Stuff to think about :

- I was lucky enough to have a 2nd player to hand, so I instantly jumped on that. However, the car on the front plane has a tiny **** in the back wheel. Not sure how that realistically affects performance but it bugged me a little bit

- Scenery. There wasn't any. Not even a little, which is a shame. Scenery, when used well, is good to add a sense of speed. When you are on a land markless strip of road, it becomes hard to judge how fast you are really going. Plus eye candy is always good. Your level did feel a little bare.

- The vehicles, whilst a bit clever, weren't nice to look at. They didn't feel like cars, or anything else really. I think this ties in with the scenery, you should theme them more. Also, sticker them differently. It's always good for a chuckle at the beginning of race levels when multiple players are fighting over who gets the black car. I did feel like you could have put some more effort into tarting them up a bit.

- On controlling the vehicles, it always felt like I was just about to jump out the top of the vehicle. The fact that I was so worried by it meant that it made my jumps more cautious and lost me the race. You should lower the blocks on each side so that it's easier to get going again and you're less likely to fall out the top. Also, it might be an idea to make them wooden, rather than cardboard. That'll mean that once you get your speed up, if you miss a jump you'll still keep going quite fast. The way it is now, if you miss a jump then you grind to an ungraceful halt. I'm not sure if that was your intention, but it didn't make for very impressive racing.

So :star::star::star: for now. For that score to increase for me, you'll need to improve the scenery a bit, adding decorations and such, and tweak the handing of the vehicles and make them look cooler Do those things, and you'll be at 4 stars if not 5 for effort, from me.

My F4F are my Seeking the Meaning level's in my signature (don't worry, the prologue is only about 30 seconds long )

Thanks for the feedback! It's a bit hard to add scenery to the two-player part of the level since the only plane that isn't taken up is the middle thick, but I'll do my best. I actually added some invisible matter so you wouldn't jump out of the car... I should have mentioned that in the tutorial. lol I noticed the thing in the back wheel after I had placed all the cars , I'll fix that. For the vehicle look...let's just say soon, you'll be able to 'win' nicer vehicles... . Is there really a difference between using wood and cardboard? Is wood lighter? I never knew! Again, thanks for the feedback, can't wait to check out your levels!

To everyone else: A big update will be coming to HazardRacers soon, stay tuned

Nah man, wood is heavier than cardboard It's worth a try, it would change the dynamics slightly so that it would be harder to get up to speed but once you are, if you mess up a little bit you won't slow down as much

If you got rid of the back thin layer on each car, and attached the wheels to the front thin layer of the vehicles, that would free up some more decoration space.

Ok then, I'll change it to turquoise wood- that stickers well and still has a the properties of wood. I tried removing the back thin layer of the vehicle, but it makes the vehicle look bad IMO. I'll work on it

Hey played this and agree with all of Asbestos comments. The visuals just weren't very nice to look at, consider getting hold of foreground and background layer tools, you might want to stay away from glitches but I think it would really help add that bit more detail this level needs without collisions and whatnot. More creative sticker work would really help, it was all block colours so try more patterned things. The crowd seemed dead lol they look like they have a lot of points in them but I think start with a square and corner edit simple limb shapes then animate a little like waving arms or something. Would add much more to them, plus, give em faces! D: I played 1 player so I'm not sure if the crowd is even there 2p, but anyhow, 1 player it seems very empty by yourself. I think the car was too slow, I found jumping froward when boosting was not easy, the car would be flying forward thus causing sack to not move much and fall in the pit of fire. I could just keep bouncing back and forth on fire, which isn't challenging but slow. Buttons would make sure you have to land on top. Mold cars into more interesting looking things, how about funky vans. If you do most of the work with stickers you could give players a few to pick from without worrying about thermo. It's an alright level but needs a lot of work to realise it's potential. :star::star::star: for now, with massive tweakage could be a lot better, there's an F4F in my sig if you are up for it.2010-05-28 18:56:00

My next big update will add more visuals, a livelier crowd, and more/better modes for 1 player. I'm not sure about the buttons- I knew you could use the fire, but you wouldn't get a very high score or go very fast, so I didn't add invisible matter to the sides of the block. More cars will be coming in the next update too. Thank you for your feedback .
