A few questions about the possibilities of LBP

Archive: 6 posts

I know it isnt the complete version...

but can you make items defy the real world logic?
things like hovering objects that move? so essentially floating platforms or floating items? cause reading about the conveyor belt, the belt kept breaking? is it possible to make that belt so that it wont ever break?
Im also wondering about forces - friction, shearing force, etc etc.
Like in the first demo in GDC2006 where he was running ontop of the gear, is it possible to make it so that the wheel almost has nil friction on it, so it wont slow down?

Also I know every level is played on three layers, say you wanted a item to interact with all three layers, can you make that item go across the three layers depth-wise?

A lot of my 'to be' ideas require a very dynamic world, is it possible to have a gigantic dynamic world? or is the PS3's power limited in that case?
Im not talking about something like shadow of the collossus which actually didnt seem very interactive, but something where anything you do in the world will affect how the rest of the level will act.

Can you do dynamic lighting too? like a spot light? or change a level to pitch black?

I got more questions but I cant remember all of them =p

I've moved this to Everything Else Little Big Planet as you are more likely to get a response here. Help should be used for help with issues in the Beta if possible.

You can't make stuff actually hover. Dark Matter floats in place, but it isn't affected by anything whatsoever. Can't move it, grab it, push it, etc. I'm not sure what you mean by friction, but rubber has more friction that, say wood. You can also adjust the tightness of the bolts you attach to make them a bit looser.

You cannot change the plane of the item. Once it's in layer A, it's stuck there. However, you may think up of clever ways to move said item from layer A to B, or C... Complex switches and emitters.

Yes, the world can be "dynamic", that's up to you. Complex switches will do this. You can even randomize stuff, rather!

Yes, there is dynamic lighting. You may also make a level PITCH BLACK... So just carry your little candle around...watch out for that death-trap...

with the friction i guess i was asking whether can you adjust the amount of forces acting on an object? not just a friction force but shearing forces to?2008-10-07 21:17:00

I've been working on a floating platform design. It will take some work but it's possible with the tools we have in the beta. It won't be as easy as grabbing the object and assigning an attribute to it but it will work. A lot of the fun things take a while to figure out and and everything is possible.

I've made a tank with tank treads that works 90% of the time. I've tested it over some rather large holes in the ground and a few sharp triangle obstacles and it works pretty well. I could basically write a paper on how to design this and I may just do that. It just takes some time and effort though. I could easily transfer this concept into a conveyor belt. You could also use emitters to create the illusion of a conveyor belt. That may be the most reliable setup.

I think someone beat me to the answer about the friction. You can loosen the bolt of the wheel and it will spin longer than if it had remained tight. You could also use a motor depending on your desired effect.

Also I know every level is played on three layers, say you wanted a item to interact with all three layers, can you make that item go across the three layers depth-wise?

Not really. Like stated above you could create an effect that would allow you to move through the layers but you can't have your sackboy drag from one layer to the next.

Absolutely. I'm actually working on the key components of a dynamic level while the beta is wrapping up. I plan on having an ever changing world that will nearly be as unique as the player playing it, and it's all possible. The many types of switches and other tools have endless potential. You could simply have a sackboy-proximity switch that would change the environment as you wish without the player ever knowing he did anything.

Some of the lighting you're looking for is not in the beta but I've seen videos of the full on version. You can have spotlights and other forms of ambient lighting. In the beta you can change the fogginess of the level, the color of the fog, the time of day, and the darkness levels. I haven't seen any tools yet that would allow you to turn the level pitch black instantly though.
