SWITCHAROO!! (Part One)v0rtex2002
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP%20Switcharoo/ICON0.png

A showcase level for comphermc's Custom Switch Design contest.

Well, comphy was limited on space, so he asked that one of the winners step up and put together a showcase level for the switch designs in his latest contest. I accepted the challenge and then quickly got carried away, as I am wont to do. I started creating a full-fledged level and before long, I realized that I was not going to have enough thermo for all of the switches in my grandiose plans. So I decided to split it the same way as his contest:

Part One: Free-form, anything goes switches.
Part Two: Switches designed for possible inclusion in comphermc's sequel to his Interstellar Infiltration level.

This level is for Part One
(ahem - with two notable exceptions... I goofed and included wa_delmaw's "Part Two" switches here before realizing that I actually had three switches from him/her - sorry).

Here are some screen shots - I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did creating it!

There is an optional gallery with prizes of all the creator's switches, and lots of secrets to hunt for too! Good luck!!

Good job vortex. Played it earlier and was very impressed. It's certainly an above average 'showcase level'.2010-05-26 01:35:00

I played this last night (under an alt PSN because I didn't realize you had opened it) - very impressive! I loved the mechanics - everything felt "tight". Even though the idea was a switch showcase, it played like a full level - lots of secrets and things to do. Nice job!2010-05-26 12:59:00

Hey-

I played last night, it was by far, the best (and also longest) showcase level that I had ever played. It had everything that a regular platforming level would have, I look forward to part two.

I rated it :star::star::star::star:.

Ah, so you're C12343231283183?

@Vortex: played it last night, fun stuff! Well, except for the Rube Goldberg room.

But we already discussed that! Also, I love free prizes (that are worth keeping/re-using)!

Yeah - I've implemented a fix there. Once the "button" is pushed in, a timer will start. If the RGM doesn't complete, the door will still open after a few seconds.

Glad you liked it! Thanks for the feedback. Can I offer F4F on anything?

I had a run through Vortex, the way you transitioned from the techy environment to the stone one was fantastic, loved that!2010-05-26 19:30:00

Great level. Especially for a showcase. xD The switches were really cool. Great job. Nice visuals, I usually hate levels that use dark matter but this one was great.
I hated the mascot. xD
Mmmm nice job, loved it.

pretty cool level, besides the switches (which were pretty class) the actual level and layout was good. I liked the way the switches were intgrated into different material. i didn't like the robot guy, i though his model was kinda crude and the electricity annoyed me.
even though the switch eater chase was cool, i thought there could have been more going on, it seemed kinda normal.
All the switches worked perfectly, except i wasn't sure how i got those score bubbles at the end, was it because of that revolving switch with the four lights?
The point of a showcase was definitley made. good job.

if i think of anything else worth saying i'll let you know

if you're in the mood for feedbacking can you play my spelunking level, its only out a day!

Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely check out your level.

Lots of folks don't seem to care much for ol' Relay. Character design really isn't my strong suit. I liked the idea of a guide/character made entirely of switches, but I guess I didn't execute it very well.

As for the chase sequence - you're the 2nd person to describe it as sort of plain. Any suggestions for spicing it up? There are like 8 obstacles already. Are you talking more decorations, or more stuff to do/jump/swing over?

Thanks again!

yeah, well more stuff would be nice i guess. i'd like to see more destruction, like things getting knocked over. decorations i don't think would be noticed as much as destructible/ knockable material. if there's enough room in the thermo more obstacles would be nice too. i'd like to feel as if the whole cave falling apart you know? a tall order but its only a small part of the level, i wouldnt be too pushed about spicing it up that much2010-05-27 22:25:00

Pretty nice showcase you got yourself here, what contest was this anyways? I'm dissapointed that I didn't hear about it, would have loved to have entered Anyways, your level;

The Good stuff :

- Sleek futuristic design with a nice progressing into the rocky caves template. I liked the robot although his legs seemed a bit too thin for a robot of that size but thats just a measly nit pick

- Nice splashes of puzzles between the switches, I liked how you used the switches to get to the next switches, was a constant progression and the player got to see them all being used properly and not just to turn a light on or something daft.

- Groovey chase section and cool credits.

Stuff to think about :

- The decoration in the caves bit a shade lack luster. A few things would really bring it out, like stallactites and moss/fungi etc but that's for you to decide

- The switch eater could have been chomping down inferior switches as he was chasing you, that would have been nifty. The decorations of that section were a little empty as well again, but i'm guessing that all those switches nom'd up your thermo pretty fast

- Was that little white semi circle thing at at the end a vehicle? Because me and my friend couldn't work out what to do with it, we tried to get in but couldn't reach. In the end we just ran across the water, which after a while felt like we'd done it wrong because it took sooo long to get across. A bit more instruction here would'a been nice

So yeah, pretty ******* for a showcase level, and I do appreciate that there were probably heavy thermo restrictions because of all the community objects at play here.

I gave :star::star::star::star::star: but that's for everyone in the level, and not just you! Don't go hogging it all to yourself!

Wow - Thanks for the great feedback!

I'm a bit hesitant to to change the chase scene much more as I don't want to dramatically change it's difficulty either way (seems a bit unfair to the players who came before). I've considered spicing it up a bit with some more stickers/decorations and/or variance to the textures in the background/foreground. But I'm not sure how much I want to fuss with it.

Not sure why you had trouble here. Yes - it's the lower half of the pod from the Incredibles pack. Relay gives a little instruction, mentioning that the hovercraft is the way to go if you're in a hurry (it is a LONG walk). But why you had trouble getting in, I'm not sure. Just hop in the middle, grab the front to go forward, or the back to go in reverse.

Thanks again for the kind words. I've just left some F4F on your Seeking the Meaning thread (great level, BTW).

This was a really cool level. I don’t normally play showcase levels and as a non-creator a level showcasing switches would not have been on my play list at all but that just shows how wrong you can be. This level was definitely worth playing.

You made clever use of the various switches, integrating them into fun gameplay and puzzles so that they were used to their full potential rather than just demonstrated in a sterile or pointless fashion. Even as a non-creator I got interested in the different and ingenious ways they worked. How geeky is that, lol? I also liked all the different environments you created for the switches to set them off. The Gothic area really suited miservista’s switch and the space/techy area suited wa_delmaw’s switches perfectly.

As you know, I love hunting for secrets and you had some excellent (by which I really mean fiendishly well –hidden!) ones scattered through the level. I played the level at least 3 times trying to track them all down and I still haven’t succeeded – 3 missing from memory.

Finally, something I never thought I’d hear myself saying, the credits were so cool! I loved the little hover craft and the shallow water. Nice.

Well what can I say? Playing your level was like opening what you think is going to be a dry textbook/manual and finding instead a fun and interesting story. Great stuff – :star::star::star::star::star: & <3

This level has a lot of interesting switches that was made by other creators. Interesting gallery level [well not exactly a gallery level it has gameplay]. You even added different environments to this level. 4 stars.

If you can, play and F4F my recent level "The Hero Chronicles LV2 Twilight Towers".
