Who's got a Wii?

Archive: 80 posts

Hi all!

One day i went to McDonalds and they were doing the Monoply game thingy where you peel off labels to win food and prizes.

Well one day i peeled a label off my chips and it said "Instant win, Wii and 3 EA Games". I screamed and was like OMG is this real lol. Well it was and i have just received my Wii in the post today

I was wondering if anyone else had one because i have a question!

I know that you can play online with the Wii and you can give your friends/family your code to add so that you can play together. But say if i added one of my friends from America, how would i know when their online to play? Is there a messaging system like psn messaging?

I will look more into it when i get home from work and set it up but i was wondering if anyone had some information.

Thanks in advance <3

I do, but I've never really bothered to set up the online thing because I almost never play it. I mean, it's obviously a cool thing to have (especially if you didn't pay for it ) but it's not super fun unless you're playing with friends.2010-05-25 16:24:00

I've got one, gathering dust like it has been for probably over a year now. Honestly the thing just doesn't excite me at all, the games I find boring. Maybe I'm just not a fan of waving my arms around. Majority of the games you do that. I've played mario kart online and it was fun while it lasted, I think you can see when friends are online from whatever game it is say mario kart there is an online menu with maybe a bit saying friends online can't vouch for it. Messaging there is a message box.. you get messages to yourself like how long you played etc and you can send yourself messages.. so why on earth you wouldn't be able to receive messages from other users is beyond me so I'd imagine the answer is yes. But again I can't say, I wouldn't be surprised if your only allowed to communicate with yourself.. Somehow I have to be wired online these days when gaming, it's just not as fun otherwise, it's very strange.. but I think the wii is the weakest for me in terms of online so I don't bother with it. It just doesn't have any games that made me say wow. It is more of a multiplayer console and requires a certain level of fun within oneself to enjoy it. As you call yourself a funky fun gal I think you will have a blast with it even if only maybe for 5 mins lol I mope around most of the time so it REALLY is not up my street lol2010-05-25 16:38:00

Fender, that is incredibly awesome that you won a wii.
Unfortunately, the online leaves a lot to be desired. It certainly doesn't work like psn or xbox live. I've never successfully played online with anyone. Mine is mostly sitting in my cabinet collecting dust.

Wii sports was fun for about a month. So was wario ware.

Well erm lol reading all of your responses i dont feel excited about going home and playing it now!

The thing is i only go on my ps3 weekends so i want something to use in the week. I have a ps2 and a dsi etc but i thought the Wii would be good.

Ive got the game animal crossing and im guessing you dont have to swing your arms about with that much so thats cool. Im also going to get the dance matt game and dance about with my sister to lose weight HA!

Ive always thought of the Wii not to be as good as any other console but now that ive won it im interested. So il give it a go!

Oh and it will keep my younger sis n brother amused anyway!

get the 'just dance' game. Its brilliant fun. (also, hate to say it but going on the wii does not make you fit. get her to try swimming!)

Wii's are ok, the friends system is a bit weird.

Basically, you have to exchange your unique Wii friend code, both of you have to enter each other's codes before you can message each other and stuffs. Then, playing online gets even more complicated, well I think the only online game I have is Animal Crossing (Which is a really good game, even if it is for children!! ). To play online on Animal Crossing you then have an in game friend code which you must exchange with a friend. I think to play online you must have them added both with the Wii's friend code and the in game code (could be wrong though).

I don't have any other friends with Animal Crossing though, so maybe sometime I could get my Wii out, clean the dust off, and we could play Animal Crossing? I might not be bothered though... LBP is sooo much better...

Oh, and that's amazing you won a free Wii! Those things are usually scams....

Aww, sorry to hear that m8
Better luck next time.

(Heh Wii jokes ftw! )

lol, no but seriously, grats m8, my bro has a Wii actually, but i haven't played it much tho, i only played the Metroi Prime Trilogy on it, but finished it in like 4 days, so i didn't mess around with the online much.

I'll have to ask my bro later as he seems to play onlie kinda often.

I'm tempted to buy a Wii for 1 game...Monster Hunter Tri. I would be thrilled to win one because then I could play one of my favorite franchises without directly supporting the evil Nintendo money printing machine. I don't know if Monster Hunter would appeal to you or your siblings, it's not your typically Wii game and is best played with the standard controller. I've heard that the online for this game is great...I know I've had a blast playing the PSP version online.2010-05-25 20:06:00

I had a Wii before I got a PS3, with internet. I know few games with online play, but all the games with online play have separate friend codes. (i.e. Animal Crossing: City Folk and Super Smash Bros. Brawl). Online play is also quite boring, too.2010-05-25 21:16:00

If you're talking about being idle at the main menu, no there's no PMing, or any notifications of online friends, certain games you'll be able to chat (Animal Crossing) And it may also show you who's on if you're looking to play with someone, but other then that, no PMing, no notifications.

...I think

Monster Hunter Tri online play is absolutely fantastic. Capcom set up their own servers so it lacks the quibbles of Nintendo's (i.e. no friend codes, Voice Chat w/ strangers, random matchups). I highly recommend it.2010-05-25 21:41:00

The Wii's best part is the offline games. The online is weak.
If you had to buy any really good games I'd suggest Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Galaxy (2 soon out!)
The wii has a lot of great Mario games now that i look at this XD
Rayman and the Raving Rabbids is hilarious
Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon are good too.
You know, playing alone is good too

Oh yeah, Rayman Raving Rabbids (2, TV party etc.) are all a must buy! They're hilariously random.

If you haven't heard it before it's actually got nothing to do with Rayman AT ALL (Except the fact Rayman is in it a little) It's basically a load of crazy rabbid rabbits running round shooting plungers going BWAAA!!!

Give it to you for free...? I can SELL you mine if you want !

Yes I have one too, but since I bought my PS3 and LBP, I never touched it again...more than 1 year now
My favourite games were Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart.
The online is not perfect, but playing mario kart with my brother (who don't live with me) was really fun!

Anyway congrats Tia, and have fun with your Wii! But don't forget about your PS3 and LBP...

The problem with the Wii, is that they focus too much on the motion control gimmick, instead of actual gameplay.

Hidy Ho Fenderjt! I've spoken to you a bunch of times through VM's, but this is the first time I have wandered into one of your threads

Anyway, the Wii is not a system to be used online really. Even if the online functionality does work, there are still many balance issues with Nintendo's online games in my opinion. I just hate playing Wii games online

But that is not to say that I hate the Wii! I absolutely love some of the best games on the Wii. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Boom Blox, and many more are just fantastic. Though the games may not look as beautiful as PS3 games, they make up for it with incredible gameplay. I would make sure to check out game reviews before picking up any Wii games, though, because it is also cursed with the very worst games available.

I hope that you enjoy your Wii, and don't let the haters get you down, because there are plenty of reasons to love your newfound toy!

Some friends of ours got one and really enjoy the Wii sports games. The graphics are pretty dorky on that, but last weekend we were over there and really had a good time playing Frisbee golf and the table tennis as well as a few others we tried. It is known to be fun when you have people over so its worth getting one!
Ive still gotta try out the sports ones, ive tried a few before like bowling.
I have a feeling im gonna throw the controller across the room even with the safety band on lol!

Congrats on the win, that's awesome! Nice to know they really do give out prizes other than buy one get one free vouchers lol.

I have a Wii too, It doesn't get as much play as my other consoles, but it's still worth having. There's some superb exclusives and Virtual Console is excellent!

Totally recommend:

Monster Hunter Tri
Endless Ocean
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Paper Mario
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

You should start a friends code exchange thread.

I've never been much impressed with the online multi-player, but a few awesome WII games that are phenominal:

Wii sports and wii sports resort - GREAT 5 minute experiences.
Boom Blox - one of the best multi-player games EVER. Not exaggerating - imagine playing a perfect representation of Jenga by virtually pulling blocks out, or throwing bowling balls at the other player's forts to break them apart. Incredible stuff.
Zelda: Twilight princess - I played this from beginning to end. One of the most incredible game experiences I've ever had.
Super Mario Galaxy - quite possibly one of the best platforming games ever made. I just got Super Mario Galaxy 2 yesterday, which by the ratings looks like it's one of the top critic reviewed games ever so far.

I can count on 1 hand the great Wii experiences I've had..... but the ones that are there are fantastic. The Wii is so different from PS3 it's definately worth owning both.

Get Sin & Punishment on VC. I think it might be the only way to get it in English? It's sooooo gooddddddd

On WiiWare: The Bit.Trip series of games is addicting, and World of Goo is fantastic as well. Also LostWinds 1 and 2, and NyxQuest.

I think it would've been mentioned already but it's a port. Not knocking the quality!

True... I originally played it on the PS2. However, the mechanics of the game work really well on the Wii (battles where you 'draw' symbols on the screen as your weapons). And the visuals are unlike anything else I've seen.... it's like playing in a 3D watercolor painting with a beautiful story surrounding it. I would recommend anyone who hasn't played "Okami" to pick it up on the discount shelf.

Congrats on your lucky win Fenderjit.

I have a Wii and my kids love it, but there's only a few games which I can honestly say I've liked. Zak and Wiki, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and...erm...well, that about it really.

Actually, no...to be fair there's quite a few WiiWare games that are worth playing too, like Tombi, Tales From Monkey Island and World of Goo for instance, plus all the old classics like Super Metroid if you're into retro gaming.

Absolutely. Both are fantastic. I don't think it even matters which one you play through first. They are both identical quality - just a different story with different challenges and bosses. The Super Mario Galaxy levels are also a great showcase for the Wii controllers. After playing for a while, the Controller in one hand/nunchuck in the other hand starts to feel like an extension of your arms, and doing complex things feels natural - much better than trying to remember a whole bunch of little buttons for different purposes.

Yeah i have to admit the two controllers feel weird as your using both hands for seperate movements. I will have to get used to it, cant wait to buy these 2 games, i might start off with number 1 first.

Hey Tia! Just happened to stumble upon you thread Congrats on the win! I have a Wii, I actually had it before the ps3. We can exchange codes sometime and attempt online but I have heard it is not that great :/ When it comes to playing a game alone, the ps3 is the better option 9x out of 10. I noticed a few people said mentioned the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess... I have to say I have never been so into a game ( other than LBP lol ) it was very good! At first it is a bit strange having two controllers, but once you get used to it you should have no problem at all. Right now the Wii is packed up (for my move) but I will look at my games when I get it back out and give you some suggestions. I have found that it is a GREAT thing to have at parties! Again, Congrats!! 2010-06-09 23:58:00

Hey Tia! Just happened to stumble upon you thread Congrats on the win! I have a Wii, I actually had it before the ps3. We can exchange codes sometime and attempt online but I have heard it is not that great :/ When it comes to playing a game alone, the ps3 is the better option 9x out of 10. Thanks for the info cupcake! I will look into getting that game then XD and yes when you get back we can exchange codes and give it a go! lol

Good to see you won one, i got mine like 2 years ago, and just use it to play very occasionally, mainly metroid prime III, super smash bros, and wario ware inc with my bro, but the online is very laggy (it was for me), make sure to get the necessary updates on the console system settings, as well make sure to set your city on the weather channel and to download the picture channel (and others if there are) newest version on the wii store, on the wii ware section (in case your new system dont include it)2010-06-10 03:22:00

In my opinion, the best Wii game, is the first one I ever got, the simple Wii Sport, awesome game to play with friends. 2010-06-10 09:18:00

My Wii doesn't get much play time.

That will all change when Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword comes out.

i find the wii is only fun when you have friends around, and only a few games are fun for any amount of time. And as i got aa PS3, i havent used since i got the ps3. It is good to entertain friends who dont own one themselves.2010-10-06 22:49:00

Yeah i know its only fun as a party machine to occasionally play (just play brawl, wario ware inc, and mario party 8 sometimes), nintendo stood behind on this generation, why? the wii could had been much more better with HD support (A metroid game in full HD would have been awesome!) and a better online gaming support! (really the online gaming on the Wii sucks, its too laggy), they even forgot of some of their most successful franchises like F-Zero (I love F-zero and i expected to have one in the Wii!, so I have to at-least replace it with Wipeout HD, which in my opinion goes nothing as close as in excitement as F-zero but its good) and Starfox (I wanted to see Fox Mc Cloud again!, and a Starfox wii would have been awesome!).

I barely ever play my Wii anymore... compared to PS3 the games are just ugly and full of non-responsive, gimmicky controls. I'll take a gamepad to that. ... thing, any day.

I think it was kind of intended to be primarily a party machine but even then the novelty wears off. Last time I played Wii sports it was.... boring. And my company found it boring as well. Very rarely are the motion controls used for anything meaningful and the graphics suck, is it me or did gamecube have better graphics?

And online play, just forget it. Total after thought. Not like Sony or MS who fully embraced it even since the PS2 and Xbox days, Nintendo seems totally against it. To this day I haven't added a single friend to my Wii, and I don't think I'd even know how if I'd find one. Imagine the instant longevity to tons of Wii titles if they had online play. Wii's internet play seems limited to that ridiculous rate my Mii spam I get every day.

I think my bro added some of his friends, but, you are adding the console as a friend, not the person!, Things that the wii lacks are:
-Individual user accounts
-Better graphics
-More classic franchises remade
-Better online support
-Better media support

I think that Nintendo is successful now just because the console seems to be very popular with kids and people that cant afford any expensive gaming system (ie. xbox 360, PS3 or a good computer), but not with hardcore gamers, seriously, i don't know anyone that is a hardcore gamer that plays Wii unless it is a Nintendo fanboy.

Nintendo tried to stay traditional and that is making it fall back (in my opinion they just got lazy and tried to impress just by the controls and that's it!, now it only stands popular because of the franchises it handles, the huge amount of useless games that it has, and their hand-held systems) if for the next generation of consoles Nintendo doesn't come up with an up-to date system its going to be their doom.

another post here-
the wiis controllers seem unsensitive, even with the $50 "wii motion plus". The playstation move has taken the wiis limited system and greatly improved it.

I have a Wii and the only thing i use it for is Monster Hunter Tri..
But that game has a build in friendlist so i use the MH one instead of the Wii code-list.

I have to say that the matchmaking is superfast, dindn't expect that for the Wii.

Oh wow, but sadly that is only for that game, try playing brawl, its very laggy (I don't know if at the moment they have fixed that, but i believe that most Nintendo games online support is peer to peer, which sets the game speed to the lowest of the players, probably Monster Hunter uses dedicated servers)

I also have Brawl and it's coowl but i get pwnd big time in it.
I do have some more games for the Wii but not as many as for the PS3.. i think i have 6 Wii games :l

Brawl, SMG, Mario Kart, New Super mario brothers and monster hunter tri. In case you didn't notice, i love mario games

I think MH3 uses dedicated servers indeed.

P.S. i'm going away to prague now so i won't post for some days ;P
