Description
Well, I've been pretty busy these days, but Taffey's Survival Challenge motivated me to make another level on account that it was just a minigame. I was wrong. I learned so much from the experience as if it were a full level, especially with logic and ways to tame that pesky wobble bolt. I ended up using a lot of behind the scenes moving parts, and it took its toll on the level. I apologize ahead of time for the lag, but this was the best I could do. It does make the gameplay a whole lot easier, so I guess that's a good thing!

To be honest, I've never taken interest in survival challenges before, except for a few really good ones on the PS3, as I found them to be a bit shallow in gameplay. I tried to compensate for this by adding a storyline, so I hope the subtle story (and movie!) enhances the experience.

I had a lot of fun making the level and the movie, so I hope you all enjoy!

Wow, just by looking at that video I know something amazing is going to be in-store.

I'm gonna go try it now and edit my post when I've played it.

EDIT:

Alright, got to play it, and it's amazing!

The intro and visuals are mindblowing, they're in my opinion as good as they get. The way you presented the storyline (without speech bubbles) was great, and the look of everything in it was perfect, mainly the chariot. The music and sound effects were very fitting too.

Now for the actual gameplay, the most important part. It felt like a very unique survival challenge, since some other survival challenges don't move past one scene and almost all of them don't have a story, which makes your level stand out alot. The platforming was top notch, and quite addicting too, the only problem being each time I failed I had to watch the opening scene again. It's great to watch but just a little time consuming. But none the less..

5 stars and a heart!

YAY another level from Jeffcu 28, i've played all of your levels and think their amazing. The visuals were mindblowing, especially the chariot and all the detail gone into the buildings and intro is amazing. It was very fun and is quite addictive, the story was great aswell. This is a sure winner for the contest and is probably one of the best survival challenges i've played. I loved all of your other levels and this didn't dissapoint. Good luck for the contest! :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3.2010-05-25 07:54:00

Ok now this level is AMAZING!
But I will let you know a few things that bothered me.
First off, although the intro is EPIC!! (loved the storytelling aspect) it was a pain to have to sit through everytime u restart. I suggest giving the option to skip the intro. Next i found that the chandalier u have to survive on wasnt clear enough on instructions. It could have said something because at first it seemed like a platforming survival.

But although those two things were bothersome, overall the beauty of the visuals, storytelling and gameplay gave u a solid score of 6stars and 5 hearts2010-05-25 10:22:00

@ MattAstr

Wow, just by looking at that video I know something amazing is going to be in-store.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the mini movie. Hehe. I had a blast making it, and I kept chuckling the whole time.

Also, thank you very much for your kind words about the level. I kind of felt like I rushed it a bit because of school work, so I'm really happy to hear that you think it's "top-notch." Will you be publishing a survival challenge too? I'll leave feedback for it if you do...Thanks for playing and your feedback again!

@lbpawesomeness
Thank you for playing my new level and for being such a loyal player. Hehe. I'm thrilled that you liked it! I'll be leaving feedback for Graffiti City when I find time...

@famous ali custard muffin

Thank you both for playing my level and for the really helpful feedback. You both said something similar that came up when salieri playtested my level, so I will address them together:

it was a pain to have to sit through everytime u restart. I suggest giving the option to skip the intro. Next i found that the chandalier u have to survive on wasnt clear enough on instructions. It could have said something because at first it seemed like a platforming survival.

My only complaint would be the same as ali, it wasn't that clear at the beginning where you had to go or what you had to do, so I was wondering aroun for a bit.

salieri pretty much voiced this concern, suggesting that I split the level in two: make a survival challenge with the chandelier and then make an entire new level with everything in the beginning. The problem was that the level is misleading. The introduction primes the player for a full level when it's actually just a survival challenge, and the ending also seemed abrupt in that sense.

However, I was hesitant to chop off the beginning because I was going along the lines of what MattAstr said:

It felt like a very unique survival challenge, since some other survival challenges don't move past one scene and almost all of them don't have a story, which makes your level stand out alot.

I really dislike quicky levels. As much as it would be convenient to just plop the player on the chandelier on the get go, I couldn't get myself to do it. I needed to do something more. But you're right. Giving the player an option to skip the intro would have been a fantastic workaround, but given my time constraints, I don't think I would've had the time to incorporate it...

As for instructions, I thought it was pretty straight forward; it's just realizing that the chandelier is the actual survival challenge that might cause problems. But if people are still having problems, I guess I can republish with more instructions...

Thanks again for both of your constructive feedbacks; I hope you'll find my feedback for both of your levels as valuable too.

Tiredly yours,

hmm yea. i mean you could have gas emit to make the player "teleport" to the end of the intro

oh yea yea i meant that it was hard to know that the chandalier was the survival part. instructions are, as u said, unneeded. An indication would suffice

Hi, jeffcu28! WOW! You did brilliant work! With all its features this level looks like some good adventure level or maybe horror quest. Very beautiful environments and great main idea. I love intro but I agree with ali985 and famouscustard that it will be better to have skip option somehow. Anyway - I had much fun during play on this level and I gave you 5 stars and heart for it! Great work and good luck with Taffey's Survival Challenge.2010-05-25 12:37:00

Wow, This level is amazing. I love your ?mansion?. It is great! I am working on a level that has a mansion in it and I feel fully shamed at what I thought was a great looking mansion after seeing yours. The scale of this level was amazing. I really love the story and the stage coach thingy was amazing. The survival aspect was good, at first I thought it was going to be ridiculously easy (because of the speed) but it sped up a lot and became much more difficult. It was all really great fun, I gave you :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3. Hi5 for another great level.2010-05-25 21:30:00

Whoa! though this was another new level, until I read survival.
Although, after reading that this level made you feel like if you were making a real level, then that makes this feel more motivated.

Anyways, I'm going to check this level out when I have the time.

Jeff!!

At last a new level by you. I was so happy when I saw your thread. This is truly a piece of art. Beautiful in every aspect. The carriage ride, the narrative, the mansion (I love how it opened up and revealed the back plane), and then the challenge itself. The moving chandelier was very pretty and very fun. It was easy at first then the challenge begins. I loved it. The lag was noticeable but I think it actually helped me get a couple combos, so I am not complaining. This was a great level you made here.

Don't worry about a F4F, and of course you get a heart for this.

The level and Design looks really nice, and I love how you made the carriage, But its always bothered me when "survival" type maps include long Unskipable intro's.
And I've played it 3 times before I stoped trying I kept dying when I would "leave" the mansion and go into the garden, My Sackboy wouldn't jump for me, and I got tired of the intro xD. Those are just my little notes, otherwise this is a great level ^_^.

HI!

Great survival level, the environment is very nice and the gameplay is fun, but I agree with the others would have been better if you could skip the introduction, I had played a few times more.

Time for your fabulous feedback Jeffcu.

First off, what's different about this level is that your survival challenge is the fact that it has a story.
It's not intense, but it at least makes sense to what your trying to survive in the first place.
The sticker work was awesome. There wasn't much visuals, but there was art.
I can see how you enjoy the fine pieces of art. Your level wasn't much about just a theme, but you made a good feeling to your artwork. I loved your level Zen, and you had my hopes high for this level.

Until I read Survival Challenge, I thought it would be bad. Although, this survival challenge had not only a story, but much emotion to it. You impressed me very much with this level. I didn't have any problems, but just one small problem.
That is when I finally get to the room where I start the survival challenge, I immediately died by accident.
My first reaction was, "NO! I JUST STARTED!" I wasn't mad, so I reseted.
Then this is when I had the problem. I had to watch the whole entire intro again...
I became disappointed for once and I just went patient and saw the whole thing again.

I wasn't much bothered since your visuals are picturesque and vivid.
Although, was there anyway you can skip the intro or something?
Anyways, I liked the when you entered the haunted building and then you get to see the inside by seeing the wall getting out of your way. I've enjoyed seeing that Amazingflyingpoo did this too with "Shallow Springs", but not only him, also me with "Solid Journey"
The level was spot on, but to tell you the truth after playing it my second time (Or first official time)
I didn't feel like playing it again, just because the intro was long. Although, I will say it's worth playing by time to time.

I enjoyed your level a lot and this is how I rated you. Enjoy!

Length: N/A
Creativity: 5/5
Corner Editing: 5/5
Theme: 5/5
Story: 5/5

Total: 20/20 (PERFECT SCORE!) You've impressed me; therefore, you earned 5 stars :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart. <3

Ok, I have a little space to write some feedback after a looong time out of LBPC.
And I would like to start writing feedback to you.
Just excellent! Jeffcu I love your small pieces of art, they're so beautiful and really fun.
And this is not an exception. Visuals and gameplay are fantastic.
Just one simple problem. This is a survival level, and your intro is a little big, because you have to see the whole intro and then start playing.
And I love the video!
Man I'm working on a new level with an artistic touch, a little inspired by ZEN, and after playing LLS I just said "wow". I must push myself to make something really fantastic and I hope it can impress you just a little part of what you impressed me with this LittleBig piece of art.

This level is just beautiful in every sense of the word. The carriage, the mansion and all the other details you have through out the level are perfection. The story was interesting and had an emotional impact. The wall moving to reveal and allow access to the stairs going up was brilliant. I enjoyed exploring the mansion and finding the way to the chandelier room. Unfortunately this is where things got a little frustrating for me. I died twice before I even made it onto the challenge stage area. I finally realized there was some kind of invisible material above the balcony that prevented my jump. The only way to pass it was walking to the edge and pressing the jump button until sackboy jumped. Once I got too the level it was fun but as others have said it’s a lot to go through to get to the actually survival part of the level.

Once again you've made bar raising visuals! Thanks

Five 5 stars and a heart of course.

The visuals were outstanding. From the intro to the fa?ade, including the chandelier. Everything was perfectly crafted, with such attention to detail and expert corner editing. The initial platforming elements at the fa?ade were fantastic, too.

While having a survival challenge with story sounds like an interesting idea on paper, I'm not so sure about the results: the unskippable intro and the confusing relation between the story and the actual challenge felt more like flaws.

To be honest I think it was a wasted setting. A proper platforming or story-based level like this could have been a blast, your best level yet.

I enjoyed it, though. At least you pushed the limits and tried a new approach. And that's one of your main qualities.

There's not much more you can say about this level than has already been said. The trailer is great but doesn't d justice to how great the level looks and plays. Simple premise for a survival challenge and it's also fun! The beginning is a little long winded for multiple plays, but it gives it a nice feel and adds a lovely story to the normally story-less challenge.
Loved the corner editing and the stark shapes, felt really well created and you can tell a long time had been spent.

Hey Jeff
Great level you have here. I won't beat a dead horse by saying the intro should have been skipable, since this was your first attempt at a survival challenege. I've never made one myself, but have read plenty of comments on other peoples, and they always say the same if the intro is too long. I guess it's an unwritten rule that survivals are striaght and to the point since ideally they will be played multiple times to better ones score. The visuals and story however, were fabulous, and makes me hope you do the reverse of what ali did with Magical forest(made a survival based on the story level), and make a story level tied into the universe introduced in this survival level.

Hi-

This was an awesome survival challenge! The visuals were probably the best that I've seen in ages, especially the beginning, there was so many neat things going on at the same time. It was interesting how you told the story at first like in the Sackula series by alismuffin. The level name was great too, usually I don't care much about level names but this one sounded so unique and fresh! I don't have any criticisms, and by the way, good luck with the contest.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and gave the level a well deserved <3.

Forgive me, Jeffcu28, for I have sinned. I hadn't actually played this level since the beta and I had no idea you added all of the text. It looks fantastic and really enhances the intro, and definitely integrates it better into the overall experience. You know I love the rest.

Now that my mind is back from being blown by this level's awesomeness, I can right a review.

I was on the Community Moon, seeing if any of my hearted creators had a new level, and when I saw you had one, I had a heart-attack. Before I really get into this review, though, I do have a question. Are you into art? Because that's one of the main things that stand out in your levels. The visuals are always breathtakingly beautiful.

Anyways, I loved the introduction! The carriage was very well built, the way you told the story was cool (I especially liked the heart that shattered), and it was just plain fun to look at the scenery. The mansion was pretty awesome too, and I really loved the way the front of it flew up, to give the feeling that you were inside of it. The only thing that was slightly annoying with this level was that I wasn't exactly sure where to go. I figured it out pretty quickly, but the first time I played through it I actually died because I went in the wrong area.

Once the survival part actually began, I was awed even more. I wasn't sure what it was the thing I was standing on was, but it was beautiful nonetheless (Seeing the picture on your OP, I'm guessing it's a chandelier?). It seemed that the bubbles were dropping at random locations, and not in a set order, which was cool. After about a minute or so, it started to get insane, and that's when I found out you can grab those crystal things with a white ball on the end. This knowledge was rather helpful, as the only thing keeping me from dying below me was moving insanely fast. I died pretty quickly, but when I did, the scenery was still quite fantastic.

Thanks for the level, Jeffcu, I really loved it.

By the way, you may like to know you seriously wasted 3 and a half hours of my life, as all that was spent playing Love Lost Sonata...

Already anticipating your next level, ~Insane

Hidy Ho Jeff! I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to leave feedback for this I let you down on multiple levels with this one by not being able to beta test it since I was a judge, and then not being able to comment on it until the competition was over since I was a judge, and then I ended up not commenting on it after that because I was so busy with the Vehical Triathlon Competition, Poo's High Score Challenge, and finish up Here and There [EDIT: I had Now and Then written here in my original post, but corrected it after Arrrestor's keen eye caught my mistake].

BUT! That is no excuse for not leaving feedback for one of your amazing levels, so I apologize!

So, let's talk about the level...

When I started playing this, I just couldn't believe that it was going to end up being a survival challenge. It was just plain incredible to be able to take this beautiful carriage ride with a unique concept for telling an original story... Wait! A story??? In a survival Challenge?!?!? Wow Jeff, really raising the bar for what a Survival Challenge can be :-)

Anyway, I eventually ended up at the mansion, and I was blown away by how great it was. You had a fun concept for peeling away layers as the player goes in and out of the mansion, and it worked just great. It all looked so beautiful as well. I did have an issue on my first playthough trying to figure out where to go. I ran all over that mansion multiple times before I figured out to go to the right. The whole time I was trying to figure out if I was already in the survival challenge and just couldn't trigger it to begin, or if I was supposed to go somewhere else.

I eventually decided not to be stupid and walked to the right where I was supposed to go. And even after all the amazingness that is this level, you managed to build a GREAT survival challenge into it. The actual survival challenge looked incredible. I have no idea how all the detail that you have here (and it is moving!!!) doesn't cause the game to chug (I should know since I am the master of in-game slowdown). But it runs smoothly and it is a lot of fun! You really nailed it Jeff!

I eventually ended up dying (since you are supposed to) and finished the level. That was the greatest survival challenge I have ever played. I did have a hard time playing it over and over again since there was such a long intro and a bit of playing before the actual challenge (though I did play it over and over and over since it was awesome and I was a judge), but I think that it was worth making it a little less replayable in order to do something this unique. I try to keep it a secret, but I am a huge fan of unique things, so I am all for trying something amazing and new like this even if it might make it a bit harder to play it over and over and over again 20 times in a row. I'm still going to come back to it and play it anyway.

But, despite that small issue, this really is the very best survival challenge that I have ever played. The uniqueness of it really made the level great for me. It also looked perfect, had a great story, and had a really fun challenge built in.

Amazing work Jeff!
