Remember the original Spyro games?

Archive: 32 posts

I sure do!
After starting to play Spyro 3, year of the dragon, on the original disc I got years and years ago when I first got my PS2, I saw that you could buy all of the ps1 classics on the ps store shortly after acquiring my PS3. So, I bought Spyro 1 and 2, and I'm loving them. These bring back memories from the days when Spyro was a cute little purple dragon who could breath fire without limits, flame sheep, hop around collecting gems with not-so-annoying Sparx, and explore the fun, colorful levels of each home world. Sure the graphics weren't all that great, but for the 90's, they were pretty darn good. The PS3 smoothing feature helped too.

Of course...Every Spyro game after Year of the Dragon just didn't have the spark the original ones had. And only to milk it some more, the newest 'Legend of Spyro' series just wasn't very fun at all in my opinion. Kill some monkeys. Cutscene. Kill some more. Cutscene. No puzzles or different gameplay elements at all. Not to mention Spyro's 'new look'. >__>

Judging by how far Insomniac has taken Ratchet and Clank and kept it great all these years, I just wish they would have kept the rights to everyone's favorite purple dragon. Can you imagine how great the games would be now?

Ah, nostalgia...I think I'm going to continue playing Spyro 1 after I finish my math.

Why would Insomniac sell Spyro? Spyro games nowadays are... Ick, for lack of a better word.

I remember getting Spyro 2 on my 6th birthday along with a Dualshock (1) controller... It vibrated!!

The egg thieves' laughs are ringing in my head right now, so I'll end this post here...

Insomniac said they couldn't do any more with the character, but they'd rather not just let Spyro be lost forever and be forgotten, so they sold him to another company.

Me too! I got mine on Christmas when I was 7 or 8, the same day I got my PS2 (which I later realized wasn't compatible with PS1 save files, so therefore I couldn't ever ever finish Spyro 3 since I couldn't save, until I got my PS3 of course) and I was so excited...I still have my PS2 now, and it works as good as new.

Hahaha, I can still hear them too lol! In fact, I just caught one a minute ago.

I am so disappointed with that notion of you can't develop a famous game character anymore so well.. let's sell it! Spyro and Crash Bandicoot were two really good platformers way back when then they got sold and look now, trash. I'd rather never see the games again than really miserable wannabe renditions. I was more of a Crash person BUT I did have Spyro and remember thoroughly enjoying it. It breaks my heart thinking what has happened to these franchises. UGH! WHY?! 2010-05-25 03:31:00

Also, Naughty Dog sold the rights to Jak and Daxter. Tried the demo for The Lost Frontier on PSP, it was terrible...2010-05-25 04:22:00

WHAT?!
Naughty Dog sold the rights to Jak and Daxter? I mean, I'm not a hardcore fan or anything, I've only played the Daxter game, but this is really surprising...!

Along with Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon was one of my favourites on the PS1!
Much better than that darn Rayman!

Leave Rayman alone! I have that game on my shelf lol. My beloved Crash 1-3 no more, I can't believe I traded ALL my ps1 games in years ago, silly me. Really I think there was some very nice platformers back on the ps1. This is a game I loved but it got scratched to bits! lol Anyone else play it?

I love Spyro! (I have the collection on my PSP.) The newer games just don't live up to the originals though. Oh and by the way, Insomniac never owned the rights to Spyro. Universal did.2010-05-25 17:19:00

I remember Spyro, he's so cute. I loved the game even if it was too hard for me and Rhy had to do the tricky bits.

I can hear you laughing!

Yes, Insomniac didn't own the rights to Spyro, they made the games with Universal owning it. Universal sold the rights, though, because Insomniac just couldn't do anymore with Spyro, they were out of ideas and wanted to move on to something else.

I haven't played the old Rayman games, but I've played the Raving Rabbids series and like it, though I'm sure they're very different.

I have a friend that is a huge spyro fan but i was shocked to hear they were a big fan only after playing the newer releases. He hasn't even played any of the originals. I have nothing against the newer ones but I never could understand how you could be such a big fan without ever playing the originals. To me, Spyro was the greatest game ever created. I got kinda mad when Universal sold the rights because after that the game was never even close to what the original felt like.2010-05-25 22:46:00

Spyro is my best friend! It makes me smile when I remember playing Spyro.

Slightly off topic, but don't you think it's quite funny how you can fit a whole PS1 game on a tiny PSP now?

I prefer Crash, but Spyro was pretty fun. Definitely one of the better PS1 platformers. (another being Ape Escape of course )2010-05-25 22:53:00

Yeah crash was pretty good too. For some reason, I always had problems with it freezing on me. I didn't like Crash as much because it wasn't as much of a sandbox game as Spyro was.

Did anyone else have problems with Spyro 3?

Where, there would always be one dragonfly course thing, that you don't get an award for beating it? My neighbor and I did.

Now I feel like going back and playing Spyro.

In Spyro 3, there was a Sparx level for almost every home world. The reward for beating them was a dragon egg, which is nice to have, since you need quite a few to get to the final boss...It's more of a mini game type of thing, but required if you're going for every single egg in the game. I still don't have 100, gotta get about 20 more until I get to the final boss and beat the game. I'm not exactly the kind of collect-every-single-thing-in-the-game type of person. Overall Spyro 3 was just as fun as the others, though.

Spyro was the very first game I played!! (I killed Toasty)

I hate what they have done with spyro, I have no issue with the different breaths, but Getting rid of his charge and giving him the power of flight? Giving him a claw attack? Terrible despicable choices

I still have the original trilogy on my PSOne! All of them are completed 100%...although, I still wonder why Year of the Dragon goes to 117%

I also own all the Legend of Spyro series for the major consoles...It feels so weird playing the originals then switching to the new ones. Spyro's changed so much.

I really liked Spyro. He was a dragon, yet he was animated like a little kitten. What's not to like?
even if the adult dragons seemed a little "creepy uncle".
I especially liked the music by Stewart Copland. Stewart Copland did the music for "Dead Like Me" and everytime I watch one of the episides, I think of spyro. (good show, BTW)

Yeah, I know that, but why was it that in the last world, it would never give me the egg, and for my neighbor, she couldn't get it from the 2nd or 3rd?

I believe I only needed one more. (From a Sparx world) and it wouldn't give it to me. I dunno. Maybe I was just young and stupid.

Hmm, that's odd! You had the ORIGINAL copy, right? Not a pirated one? I find it hilarious how Zoe tells you, in the first home world, something along the lines of "Hi Spyro! You might be playing a pirated copy of Spyro:Year of the Dragon, so some elements of the game may not work properly" or something like that if you are using an illegal copy.

I'm fairly certain I used my neighbor's copy when I tried for the fifth time or so...

...
...
...Maybe not...

But I know for sure my neighbor's copy was legit. And hers, I believe, wasn't working for world 2...

Meh, it was still fun though.
